Sorry, who in that team was worth keeping? Seriously, who in that team is so good that they should still be here now? Carrick (who is still here), Kagawa (maybe but Moyes picked Rooney over him) and De Gea (not that we have a choice over him leaving). The rest are either not good enough or went downhill / retired and that includes those of that team who are still at the club. Smalling and Jones have to prove this season they are worth keeping at the club.

Shaw, Memphis, Herrera, Schneiderlin are all players I think he would definitely have tried his hardest to sign, same with martial, only I think we would've lost out on martial because of the price and Fergie's stubbornness. Schweiny he may have gone for as well as he was always a big fan. Darmian he wouldn't have got because of Rafael, but it's a great replacement and I don't think Fergie would have minded him at all if we didn't have Rafael.

Surely Fergie is partly to blame for this. You had an aging side of VdS, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Carrick, Scholes, Giggs, Rooney that had carried you to success. The replacement generation was supposed to be Phil 'Duncan Edwards' Jones, Smalling, Evans, Cleverley, Powell, Zaha, Welbeck, Hernandez etc. Then he decided David Moyes was the right man to take over from him. Only De Gea really comes up to standard.
Not being funny but Fergie's last few years of transfer dealings culminating in his exit are so bad they make one suspicious of a deliberate scorched earth policy. It's not been a well managed transition at all. Everything since he left has come across as a desperate scrap to bring in genuine quality, resulting in huge fees and a constant revolving door where building a functioning side is a side act to getting 'star quality'.

Ferguson is the polar opposite of LvG as a manager. LvG has completely tried to change our style, and his game is completely tactical.

Fergie would trust Van Gaal, just as the board trusted Fergie when he dimantled Atkinson's squad.
even though it was easier to blame Moyes for everything that happened in the last 2 years, Fergie clearly made some serious mistakes in his late years and obviously shares some fault for current situtation. those who still think he left a perfectly good squad to Moyes are deluding themselves. we were champions because we had the best manager in the history of game and that's all. he's the only living person that could win the league with those players. just go back to first page and check where majority of them play today. Kagawa and Welbeck are the only ones still playing for clubs who are on the same level as us and most of us thought they weren't good enough. we literally didn't have a single player in the squad that we could put on transfer list and expect calls from Atletico, Barcelona, Bayern, PSG or Madrid. some of them retired, but most of them ended in clubs like Cardiff, West Bromwich, Everton, Leverkusen and some went to Brazil, France, Russia... and we (the board/Fergie/Moyes) thought we could compete with them. the fact that majority of those players weren't wanted by clubs we often compare ourselves to speaks for itself. that is the best reflection of their real value and overall quallity of the squad. so yeah, I think this clearout is the best thing that happened to us in a long time.

Harsh but fair. Especially when you consider that almost all the players who have since left started to decline when Fergie was still in charge and haven't gone on to great things since.
Jones and Smalling look like the real deal still tbf though.

The squad Fergie left was absolutely terrible. Truly awful.
LVG has done a superb job of moving on the rubbish. Unfortunately a few still remain e.g. Valencia

Summed it up perfect, the same fergie that had some part to play in our decline and our regression, but? It also collided with the debt burden still going pretty strong between 2009-13, so you have a perfect storm of not building on from our 2007/08 success and a debt burden that was hanging over the club, and by the time the debt and interest payments have started to do very little to our transfer budget because of our commercial deals, it was too late. it's ended in a squad needing heavy rebuilding, and still many positions are in need of strengthening now
So while fergies transition has been brutal, due to many factors our financial situation under fergie was pretty tight, so it's a combination of bad timing that left us in a mess between 2013 - present, and we still have not recovered
It's contradiction when I say fergie had some part to play and how tight our transfer policy was between 2009-13, but it was a perfect storm really of squad needing rebuilding and a tight financial budget

Thanks - although one question remains for me over Fergie and it was never answered in his books, did he see "no value" in the market and believe his squad was good enough or was he under tight budget restrictions? Because the former would really diminish his reputation in my eyes, while the latter explains a lot but doesn't explain why we let good players (like Pogba) go when he knew there was no money for replacements.
Well he's not, but you still have to explain "why" because he wasn't exactly playing champagne football either, his last 3-4 years were average, dour 4-4-1-1 games filled with average or good but aging players.
