I think you are right, Mourinho went all out to buy him when he had his tantrum so he must rate him highly. It will be interesting to see how Rooney plays with the new guys, he sometimes looks better around top players.

I've voted stay but as a caveat, if he has another indifferent season I'm done.

As a team we had a shocking year under Moyes but Rooney came out as one of the few players that could keep his head held high in my opinion alongside Januzaj and De Gea.
 
The only reason I say gone is because, despite not being good enough anymore to win titles and challenge at the highest level possible, he is still in a position to play regular football - somewhere.

Great servant in the main, but he is definitely done.

But in saying that, he's obviously not going. It'll be interesting to see how he is used this season.

I'm not sure, but I'm leaning towards stay. Mainly because Mourinho might be able to revive the guy in some way. If he has another season like last we should ship him off to the footballer's graveyard, Major League Soccer, or maybe it's the Indian superleague these days.

Voted undecided, he should be gradually phased out this coming season. But if China came in with a big offer and he was up for it then take it, but he still could play an important part just not guaranteed first choice as before.

So? He asks the ball but can do very little with it, whats the point and whats the value in that? He can barely pass, he cant dribble, his shooting is very average nowadays (did score a nice goal this season in the FA, but his long shots and free kicks for example are mostly poor)..
 
Ability wise, hes still a very good squad player, but that 300k a week (allegedly) could be better spent on 2-3 top quality youngsters.

Give him this season under Jose see if he can prove himself worthy.
 
Think he can still offer us something, up the top he can still finish if you actually get the ball in and around him, and he's a decent no.8 in his own right, plus he has experience at finishing out games and he's a fighter. The first half of last season he was utterly atrocious in all fairness but 2nd half i thought he was much better, I'd give him another year under Mourinho.

This is how I perceive our situation with Wayne Rooney, expecting him to turn the clock back and be one of the Important player for the team aspiring to compete for major honours is a futile exercise bound to fail. I expect him to show the signs of Improvement initially under Mourinho but revert to his old self once the season progresses, So I am hoping our manager would be smart enough not to plan our season expecting major contribution from Rooney and would be strong enough to drop him If and when he underperforms.

Another not so popular thing I like to add is United approach towards dealing with Long standing Stars on wane and underperforming players in general, less sentimentality more ruthlessness would be welcome . Proactively replace the ageing underperforming players before they become complete liability and do not wait forever for youngsters or new signings to fulfill their potential to the detriment of team performances.


 
Incredible that Pogba will be brought in as the world's most expensive player and will still earn 50k less than this bloke.

On the wage thing. Isn't Schweinsteiger reportedly on 200k~ a year? Why doesn't he get as much flak as Rooney? at least Rooney's 2nd half of the season contribution was measurable including a fighting display in the FA cup final. What has Bastian ever done for us? he's done nothing, has no history with the club and worst of all keeps fecking back off to Germany at every opportunity.

So his wages fine? but we must bin Rooney ASAP for it, despite him.. strangely being our most marketable player.
 
People want to see him phased out next season, but no one has actually thought about what if he has a very good season, which isn't exactly outlandish, given the quality he'll have around him.

The last time we went into a season with so much firepower in our team was probably 08/09 season, with Tevez, Ronaldo, Scholes, Carrick, Hargreaves, Giggs, etc.

We now seem to be getting that quality back, with Ibrahimovic, Martial, Mkhitaryan, Carrick, Schneiderlin, Herrera, Pogba (if he comes), etc.

He's obviously not the player he used to be, but with the amount of creativity we now have in the team, we should hopefully see more goals from Rooney. If not, by all means, phase him out, but that should also apply to all of our players, not just Rooney.

I disagree about the last part. Rooney does not set the tempo, he slows it down with overthinking his next move or touch, taking too many touches and too often these days - fancy passes that fail.

Rooney has turned into Daley Blind. Decent at many things, not truly good in anything. 8-10 years ago Rooney was direct, fast, and creative. Those things made him one of the best in Europe. Now he is slower, he overthinks his touches and passes and the creativity is there once in a while in flashes, but not as often as before. He is not the player he used to be.
 
Stay. We don't have many senior players with experience and time at the club so even for that reason alone we should not sell him. But he is also the captain of the team and the squad definitely values him highly.

Rooney is a legend of Manchester United, whether some people will never be able to admit that, hence he deserves the chance to redeem himself. I haven't seen anything that suggests him not being devoted to the United cause and I believe he wants to get the club back to where it belongs before retiring (hopefully with us, while breaking the all-time goalscoring record).

I may seem as a Rooney fanboy, but he has brought so much joy and unforgettable moments to me as a supporter through the years - I just can't hold a grudge because of those famous contract disputes.

I think he can still shine provided his main job is fixated as goal scoring. His 30-yard hollywood balls to Valencia, dropping off in midfield to retrieve the ball, sideways & backwards passing etc. are nauseating.

Leave all that to the central midfielders. Let him make runs off of Ibra and make himself available in the box. His finishing is still the best in this team besides Zlatan & maybe Martial

History is history though. Should we get Sir Bobby back in the squad? Raise Bestie from the dead?

At some point, you move on, SAF knew Rooney's time was up and put the motions in place to get rid of him. We've subsequently bowed to his every whim and we've suffered as a result because we HAVE to play him.

I have a signed Rooney shirt on my wall, I was as big a fan as any during his early days at the club, he's done now and it's time for his remaining fans to realise this. I can't understand the argument for keeping him based on what he's done in the past at all. Now is now.

The problem is that his tempo is so slow it allows everyone on the other team to get back and defend, then all he does it look for Valencia who'll in turn smash it out for a goalkick.

Not really. If Pogba stayed, worked his arse off for 10 plus years and was pivotal to us winning titles, then maybe he could have been on the sort of money Rooney is on now.
 
Does anyone think Jose might try and see if he can play differently for him by Christmas and then if he's still the same Rooney from last season jettison him in the Winter window?
 
Reading through this thread and a lot of the justification from his fans and defenders saying he should stay are based on his performances from years ago and the citing of one game: the FA Cup final.

Is done as a top level player, both at club and international level. Even Jose sees what we see; he was and never will be a midfielder because he simply does not have the attributes to play there. There is an abundance of players in the footballing world both in striking and midfield departments to whom we should be setting our standards (this applies to England too). He does not measure up to either. If Jose can bring out the goal scorer in him again, then good. But personally for me he has to go. We hurt ourselves by shoehorning him into our plans.

I prefer to pay a player based on how good they are, not how good they used to be. This isn't a care home.

its this sentiment why we have fallen so quickly. Fans don't care about contract disputes, shagging grannies, drinking and smoking if they do the business on the pitch. Many feel he has declined as a player and given a constant free pass, so now question why he has such a stranglehold on the club and media.

Can you name an outfield player who has been class for us in the last few years?

To me, we just haven't had the quality, and based on previous years, we know that Rooney strives when he's not the main man at the club, although he doesn't like to show/admit it.

With the quality of Martial, Ibra, Mkhitaryan, etc around him, he may not feel pressured to produce every game.

Having said that, if he doesn't perform, then like I said, phase him out, but same applies for everyone.

I just think he deserves the chance to stay, if he wants. Even if he isn't a starter anymore - he has earned the right to be treated with respect. But most fans want only to remember the contract disputes and hate the "greedy fat Shrek".

The money issue is also a bit hypocritical, since Rooney has definitely earned this club a lot more than what he gets in wages. I'm sure businessmen such as the Glazers would not be paying him that much if they thought it was an absolute waste.

Sir Bobby should obviously not be in the squad, however he still holds a special place at the club as a global ambassador.
 
Apparently leadership and veteran prescense doesn't matter in team sports anymore.

He's shite and he's been shite for years. We're not going to be winning the title if we're forced to shoehorn him into the side every week.

He wouldn't be content as a squad player either, the minute he's dropped his pals in the media will start a campaign to get him recalled.

Nobody out there will be stupid enough to buy him and give him the wages he's on now so we're stuck with him. I just hope Jose is strong enough to drop him when he inevitably starts the season poorly.

They were certainly evident this season! Failed to contribute a single point on the first half of the season. A purple patch in January and decent midfield performances (which he won't be given the chance to replicate) against poor sides don't excuse that for me.

Many of our United players, youngsters, coaches and football legends have praised Rooney for his leadership in the team. Talent is obviously the bigger component of a team but the intangibles also matter as well, especially when we have so many new players being transfered or being brought up from the academy. I'm not saying he must start, but it is good to have him here seeing as him and Carrick are our only long term veterans left.
