World Cup 2018 & 2022 bids

They will have beer. Don't worry about that. It'll be a deal breaker if anything, and if not there'll be a massive black market.

How that'll go down with the more stringent religious types is another matter, but it will happen.

Economic wise, that's a hell of a sell by the US.

The US bid is effectively waving money in FIFA's faces.

Clinton now...I mean they've got more heavy hitters than all the other presentations put together, on crack!....But they somehow are failing to sell it. Bizarre!

The Qatar VT (which was ridiculously smooth and most likely nothing like the reality) was more arresting than all of these (as sammsky said) titans of public speaking talking about the sport we love and love hearing being talked about...Something's gone wrong here?

I was thinking more about infrastructure. The Olympics takes place almost entirely in one city, a World Cup is geographically far wider, especially in a country the size of China.

12 years for a developing nation is an absolute eternity, specially one as ambitious as China.

I'm not rooting for China btw, I went to the world cup in the US as a kid...RFK stadium for the americans in here, now that I call Australia home most of the year, I;d love for Australia to get it.

It would be a massive success, and people would absolutely love it.

There bid is basically all about the wonga, there seems a complete lack of passion just cold hard numerical power.

Exactly, FIFA can make countries change laws to allow them to host the world cup, so any thoughts that laws will stop this is hilarious.

They're failing to sell it to us fans, but to a bunch of accountants, in the current economic climate. The money fifa would make would be the largest out of all the bids.

Japan have always been one of the better Asian footballing countries, they have won the Asian Cup multiple times and honestly never made a complete fool of themselves in any WC.

Asian Cup? Dont make me laugh mate

The point is that Japan had never even qualified for a WC before being awarded hosting rights in '96 and they then lost every match in their first WC before seeing progress - yet you are talking down other countries who are in exactly the same position now!

There wasn't supposed to be beer in Moscow or Rome but there was...Shit loads of it..There were people with hot dog carts full of Peroni just walking past the police shouting "beera, beera!" all night long....Even if (and it's not even a question cos it'll happen anyway) they can't get it legalised, every Dell Boy from here to Bangladesh will be out with a cart and a sainsbury's bag flogging red stripe.

Japan were 2 minutes away from making the WC in 1994.

Qatar has never even made the final round of qualification in AFC.

Phssschh...Those police did nothing. They were more interested in how good they looked with their sleeves rolled up than arresting anyone.

Bill seems to be pitching for another African World Cup here for some reason.

8 years from their first ever appearance in a WC (when they did very much make a complete mess of things), Chinese football has regressed to the stage that they have recently finished below Hong Kong in the Asian games, didn't make the final stage of qualifying of this past WC.

I see you are moving the goalposts now - before you said that a country should have qualified for the WC and not embarassed themsleves before being allowed to host. Now being 2 minutes from qualification is apparently enough

You made a crap point, give it up mate !

Well, it's kind of different if they temporarily disallow beer selling in a city that usually has it.

I have no idea how much alcohol there is underground on Qatar (I think I read somewhere that hotels are allowed to serve it to their hosts) but to supply beer on the black market to a whole World Cup on a country where alcohol consumption is illegal is totally different than doing it on an afternoon in a city where everyone has it.

They'll need official allowance for it to happen, and they'll probably give it anyway, it's all about the money and those countries invested a lot trying to become more common travelling destinations.

Never mind, I just absolutely do not want Qatar to get 22, maybe even more than wanting England to get 18.

Tim Vickery was just on Talksport a little while ago and he was saying that the designated stadium for the opening match/ceremony for 2014 is still a patch of bare earth, construction not due to begin until April next year.

I agree with sammsky here - I think it is good to give the WC to lesser footballing nations because it helps to develop the game over there.
Your argument also falls down on your favorite Japan! By your measure they should never have been allowed to host in 2002.

Both India and China could host a WC if they wanted to but they dont want to so I am not sure why we are even discussing it !

Anyway the Qatar bid presentation just started - I am very interested to see what exactly they have to say ...

The US delegation has the least hair between them than any other delegation....That probably counts for something. Possibly.

Surely you mean guests?

The beer thing really isnt an issue, they will just set up massive fan zones where you can drink - pissed up Brits roaming the streets of Qatar and pissing off the locals is a whole other matter though.

Well that can happen anywhere, so singling out Qatar is very unfair. (I know your not)

pfffft, what locals?

The place is teeming with workers from, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Philippines. The locals are too busy being being elitist towards them to care about what pissed of Brits are doing.

Dont see how South Korea can get it again in 2022, just 20 years after it last held the games. If it must go to Asia, then IMHO, the world cup should be hosted in either China or India.

Do China or India even want it? Would they be capable of hosting it to a decent standard?

Can't say about China but India most definitely can't host a WC. There is no chance we would get the stadiums ever built in time.

This is a country where a 8 lane 5km sea link takes over 7-8 years to build. Would love for a WC to be held here but it would be embarrassing.

Japan send out an 8 year old girl to present first. That's different.

Edit. South Korea and now Japan are going heavy on their next generation technology. 3D, HD, UHD.. it's impressive stuff.

Japan takes a leaf out of London 2012 Olympic bis strategy with the cutiepie little girl on stage.
