World Cup 2018 Qualifiers

That's because everyone sets up to defend against them. And yes, they are not as good as they look on paper.
This is where Sampaoli might be able to change things for them. Not since Pekerman has Argentina had a head coach who can make Argentina play like a team and not like 11 individuals.

I like Coutinho in midfield over Renato Augusto. Tite should test this out more.

Jesus loves that scooped flick, doesn't he? He does that almost every time a defender comes to close him down.

Neymar's been playing more like his Santos self today. He's been allowed to everything on the pitch.

I've heard the Brazil coach mentioning that he plays in Paris similar to the way he played in Santos with complete freedom and it's the same with Brazil. I think that's when he's at his best and most unpredictable. He's such a smart player and he's a really good playmaker. His partnership for country with Jesus is going to be as exciting as his partnership in club with Mbappe.

With Casemiro in the midfield, Tite should be able to put in 1 attacking midfielder. Paulinho and Renato Augusto are too simliar in their playing style.

Having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if Tite actually continues with Renato Augusto and Paulinho with Casemiro as Brazil do look quite secure with those 3.

Lovely goal.
Indeed. Coutinho took advantage of a tired Ecuadorian midfield with a quick burst past them. Gabriel Jesus has been spectacular up front as well with his hold-up and link-up play. No wonder Pep loves playing him up front.

I agree, although they have too many bottlers for my liking, can't see this squad winning anything.

Don't fix what ain't broke.

Brazilians also hated the Gilberto-Kleberson and Edmilson trio. It worked though.

Looks like Luan's about to come in for Willian. It seems like Tite wants to give the home crowd something else to enjoy.

Indeed. Augusto-Casemiro-Paulinho should be alright. The first half just seemed quite drab for Brazil as neither Marcelo nor Dani Alves went forward often enough. Given how often Neymar's drifted into the midfield, I'm surprised that Marcelo didn't push up as often.

We'll see. I really do think that Sampaoli can introduce a fighting spirit in them that past managers haven't been able to do. His strong, commanding personality should set straight the bottlers IMO.

I'm 99% this 0-0 result was fixed once they knew Chile lost.

There's no other explanation for what just happened. The last 10 minutes were too evident, with Uruguay parking the buss and Argentina doing defensive passes all the time.
It was a tight game and neither wanted to lose. The equivalent of playing down the clock by the corner flag. That's not match fixing but mission accomplished.

wouldn't be the first time.

We've never got 3 points and +3GD for a home draw against Bolivia. A remarkable feat that.

Looks like Neymar's trying everything he can to get Luan a goal in front of the home crowd.

You filed after the deadline.

And some people are sad enough to look up and find an interpretation whereby a Paraguayan had lived in Bolivia long enough to qualify for citizenship but not to play for them. A chap who never got capped or had a chance of being capped by Paraguay so opted to debut in international football for Bolivia. A completely irrelevant and anonymous actor. You should have got bitch slapped and docked your one point for complaining tbf, as if drawing to Bolivia at home wasn't embarrassing enough.

The good thing with Sampaoli is he can get run-off-the-mill players performing as world beaters. Exhibit A: Gary Medel. Argentina has plenty of such functional players.

He just has to have the balls to not count on Di Maria (who will pull a hammy in the quarters), Higuaín and possibly Dybala if his big match form is anything to go by.

It was a bitch move, for sure, but it's not like Argentina or Uruguay wouldn't have done the same in that situation.

We wouldn't have worked it out, we would have been way too busy bitching about being served up a shitshow.

You have form with this though, going all the way back to the first Copa America game ever and demanding the points after losing 4-0 because we had fielded Africans (they weren't, they were just the first black players to play international footie).

Vincent Janssen starting for Holland. Unbelievable, Jeff.

van Basten -> van Nistelrooy -> van Persie -> Janssen.

Where have the good van's gone?
van Ished?

Wow...even I thought that was a sad joke...

For those of you who aren't watching Peru vs. Bolivia, you guys are missing out on a really entertaining match. We have 3 amazing goals and Peru playing some exciting, open football.

Peru always deliver, no matter how average their players are, they always set up and play an open game. Watching a game Peru is involved in is usually bound to be one of the top two games in any round in terms of entertainment.

That, and playing at a glacial pace. Basically they give nothing to the oppos because they play so slow it's impossible for them to lose the ball unless they're pressed and almost nobody does, but at the same time it's also impossible for them to create chances because they have to break down a 10 men wall all the time

Never hated a player tbh in terms of his performances.

But I really need Di Maria out of the team ASAP. If Sampaoli's decent, the first thing he should do is take him out.

And never call him again. EVER.

So thankful those Di Maria rumours never came to fruition

Incredible that with such firepower (on paper) up front Argentina are so fecking impotent when it comes to scoring goals/generally winning things.

I'd love that haha, France smashed us earlier. I like Sweden a lot, beautiful country. I think you'll finish above us in the end but good to at least have some hope after being terrible in qualifying for the last 10 years. That Belarus loss two months ago really fecked us, will probably prove decisive. Netherlands away again this Sunday, best time to play them. Maybe we can do the double. France at home best I can pray for is a point. Luxembourg away will probably be tough given how shite we are outside of Vasil Levski

Yeah, I agree. Cool, you' ve been to Sweden? :) I think we will end up second in the end, though it wouldn't surprise me if we messed up our chances by not winning away vs Belarus. I believe France drew away vs Belarus as well, if I am not mistaken? Think Bulgaria and Sweden were unlucky to end up in this group, considering how even it is.

@Santi_Mesut_Alexis_87 On beforehand, before the qualifications started, it would not be so bad. But considering how good we have played through most of the qualifier, and since we got everything in our hands...then it would be a really tough setback to lose the play off spot in the very last game. Hopefully it is already settled before the game vs Netherlands.

Brazil are idiots. They should lose every game they can to eliminate Argentina from the World Cup right now. An Ecuador win would have put them above Argentina.

It's astonishing how lonely Messi is in the team. The myth about Maradona was that he played "alone" in a poor Argentina side (not poor at all).

Messi really plays alone. It's incredible.

I like to see the best teams in the WC and Argentina is like Italy they may play shit but ending up the winners, but I think we have the old Brazil back and after Portugal is eliminated I will enjoy watching them winning...hopefully :nervous:

Was the Argentina/Uruguay match that garbage to end 0-0?
Horrendous. First half was more open but the second was unnecessary.

Unless you enjoy the old art of limiting your opposition and negating their strengths. But it got so bad I actually started playing with my babies, Argentina weren't ever going to score.

Their opponents defend against them but they play at snail's pace and they refuse to counter attack and take risks when they have a numbers advantage.

It was pretty much 90 minutes of this last night

 that was bizarre. It looked like the Army of the Dead advancing.
