World Cup 2018 Qualifiers

I'm going to have to go walk the dog at halftime. I can't deal with listening to Dunphy and co. moan about this. They'll be 100% right but the miserableness will be beyond belief!

We've played Georgia in tournament qualifiers about one hundred million times and though it's not always easy we've literally beaten them every single time. We should not be playing a team like this so fecking terrified, we look awful.

That's no excuse not to even pretend to try and play football.

If we'd attempted to string two consecutive passes together and were being outplayed by them it would be one thing. But just lumping the ball back to them like frightened schoolgirls every time we get near it is pathetic.
Not watching the match or the starting 11, but teams like Georgia or Macedonia while not being very popular, they do have some players who play in Russia or Netherlands, don't know if their keeper today is Makaridze who I know from Portugal, not a world beater, but a decent keeper for this level.

It's really not.

We're not a great side but we're usually well organised and play to our strengths.

We're not sat on top of the group, unbeaten in 6 having played like this in every game.
Ah it is. The way we play has been the same shite since Trap. Give up the ball, try score on a long ball knock down or set piece, completely ignoring any and all midfielders in the build up. Standard template is score early, sit back and concede possession, momentum and a goal before a "valiant" fightback where we remember what a football looks like in the last 15 minutes. If we're lucky, we'll nick a winner.

I'm not saying we should winning or dominating. The gameplan is literally (no exaggeration) to boot the ball as far away as possible from our goal. No passing allowed.

It's pathetic and to be honest, I want O'Neill gone after watching this.
Thing is, is this what the management want? I doubt it. Take out Hendrick, Hoolihan and the wheels come off.

I'm honestly shocked. The only rational reason for it is that he didn't see it but made a call based on reaction but that's really bad refereeing.

Now our player gets fouled, fouls back but is carded when he should have gotten a free kick.

How are Iceland looking? I'd be very surprised if Finland managed to sneak a win.

Well I am not watching, tbh Serbia and Austria won there, but they do picked a point in Wales, 6 matches with 3 defeats and 3 draws, they are not the Faroe Islands tbf.

Regarding O'Neill, well maybe different times when he coached Celtic with Larson, Hartson or Sutton, is he playing with 3 at the back?

You mustn't have watched the recent games against Uruguay, Austria, Serbia and Wales. We're far from Barcelona or Classic Brazil but we've not been as bad as today in as long as I can remember. Dunphy agrees with me and he has a list of miserable Ireland memories which he reads to himself every morning before he gets out of bed.

Haha I know, it's not looking good for us. I frigging love the Irish so I'm glad for your lot
So you are not Irish? Didn't think an Irish person would call the country "Eire". I am a bit confused by this post, I confess, but it's probably just me. When you say 'I'm glad for your lot' who do you mean, exactly? Georgia?

Austria, in Dublin, where we were terrible for 75 minutes before Walters scored? Serbia, where we scored early then surrendered the game until the last 15 minutes when we were 2-1 down? This kind of performance is very much normality.

My biggest problem is it shouldn't be. We showed at times against Austria, and Serbia that we can play football. We can keep it down and create actual attacks we just don't do it for the majority of matches.

They scored a wonder free kick from 30 yards out, in off the bar.

Iceland have been fine. Alfreð Finnbogason been pretty bad and should have scored 1v1 against the keeper. Lucky to still have his leg intact though. Brutal challenge.

Wouldn't mind him trying that if we were playing France or Germany or whatever, but its not as though we're San Marino, all of our players are of a decent enough lower premier league/high championship level, Georgia are no team at all we should go at them and at least try to play.

I agree with @diarm - never that shit for a while. We had some good performances/results over the last few years.

New players coming in to the squad?

Why hasn't Milinkovic savic got a Serbian call up yet?

I stopped following Serbian national team but saw your question and googled quickly, officially he doesnt fit in vision of system of current national coach. Think thats bullshit and something else is in question, also think this year Lazio didnt give green light to Savic to take part in some tour for young players, not sure what it was.

Maybe never this shit, but it's a normal type of performance for us. We had a great chance to punish them after the goal and we sat back and surrendered the ball. Which happens far too often for us. There's absolutely no reason the players on the pitch can't complete more than three passes in a row, but we seem to be instructed to boot it up at any and all opportunities.

No team at all and 5 times more the number of passes? Not Malta or Andorra tbf.

Yep thats bullshit alright he's the sort of player you build a team around and it was the euro U21s

One of the worst things is they haven't even been pressing that hard, and we're just ignoring open players to hoof it long.

This is shocking stuff from Ireland today. Harried and pressed for the first 6mins, got a goal and then nothing. Giving the ball away for fun, no shape whatsoever and no real sense of game plan.

Drat! The shampoo sachets in the hotel were infused with a chemical that makes you allergic to spherical objects.

Yea it is, gave up from that shit show of national team long time ago, now i just watch our players as much as i can and hope they do good for their clubs. Watching u21,u20,u19 here and there because they are still unknown and not corrupted but the moment they turn senior, they switch off for national team and those 2 weeks of internationals they take as vocation.

tbf we're making Jano look like the Georgian Messi he was hyped up to be when he was 17 :wenger:

Austria in Vienna when we won. Then again in Dublin when we were pushing well for much of the second half before Walters scored. Serbia when we earned an excellent result and looked to pass the ball. As we did against Wales and Uruguay recently.

Yes we can often be too defensive and negative, and we're never a great footballing side, but to say it's normality to simply hoof every ball aimlessly up the pitch the second we get on it is not true. Being more tactically astute than this has been a feature of the O'Neill/Keane era.
