Nope. Despite France 1998, Croatia never had a real quality to win World Cup or Euro. Our record of qualifying most of the times and then sometimes manage to get out of the group is our real level.

There was optimism but certainly never heard any statement about trashing Portugal. Some of the optimism was based on the group games where Croatia was looking excellent while Portugal barely managed to go through.
But, looking objectively Portugal - Croatia will always be a close game which it was in the end. Also, Portugal is one of the few teams we have an awful record against unlike with Germany or Italy for example. I do agree that it is sometimes a problem with the mentality but for Croatia to actually win World Cup or Euro would be a sensation. Not quite like Greece but a sensation, nevertheless. So far we had a record which is not far from our real quality.
These qualifiers, though, I have no words. Never been so bad.
