World Cup Qualifiers | October 2017 | Play off draw on Tuesday

I think Azerbaijan will score at least one, our lineup can't defend for shit.

What's the difference between a scottish player warming the bench for a PL side and warming the bench for an italian/german/spanish side? You are good because you have guys like Lewandowski, Zielinski, Milik, Kuba, Glik, Krychowiak, etc. Those guys left Poland because they were good, they didn't become good because they left Poland

Because more clubs in EPL are able to bench the proverbial Scott because they are better set financially than, say, midtable clubs in those continental leagues. If the proverbial Scott was worth bringing him abroad to one of the clubs from those leagues, he'd probably play so the money wouldn't go to waste. Meanwhile, he's happy sitting his ass on the bench somewhere in England getting paid more than he'd get paid abroad and thus his progress stalls.

As for the second part, coaching in Poland is not better than in Scotland really, those guys weren't all starters for their clubs when they moved abroad, they had right mentality though and made it to where they are, it's not like magically all of them became good. They challenged themselves though, moved abroad for both financial and professional progress, it's a mindset that seems to be absent for some of the Scottish and which is affecting how they fare as a NT.

If you are a relatively wealthy country that loves football with 40m people in it, as Poland is, you should be doing half decent at football. Much harder for a small country living like Scotland to succeed. They can do better though but I don’t see them comparable to Poland.

This Iceland team will be a one off. It is unsustainable to maintain their level with such a small talent pool. In India cricket is life and they are bloody good at that, football isn,t on anything like the same level and it is a very poor country. China doesn’t have a football culture like we do in Europe but they are immense at the Olympics for one because it is important in that country.

We also love handball, volleyball, motorcycle speedway (Christ) here, had success in all of those sports too, doesn't really stop us from having decent football team now too, so the same should apply to China and India. The 'number of people' argument is really easy to discard.

No they won't, probably they will not qualify to every tourmament but this didn't happened by accident.

The three things that correlate to success in international football is population size, GDP and experience playing international football. Iceland lack majorly in one of those aspects. Whilst it isn’t impossible for their level to continue it is highly unlikely.

@Kostur

It isn’t easy to disprove, in fact it is proven as a key component to international football success .

They improve their level training and competing with better managers and better players.
Scotland's NT is full of players who play in England. The fact that most of them play in the second or third division doesn't just proves that they just aren't very good players.

Their problem is at the grassroots level, it's not the level of the league

I mean, if you're quick to shoot down Iceland as 'one off' and then say that 'China has no football culture' and 'India are obsessed with cricket' then yeah, you can probably make an excuse for any example that doesn't fit the agenda.

Salah's the best ;)

I'm so happy to have a player like him in our national team. He's the right example of the superstar who carries his team completely. The one who can take a penalty like this in the last minute needs a real man.

I'm also El-Ahly supporter so Manuel Jose is considered a legend for me. :D
Also managed my club in the biggest victory we had over Benfica 7:1, managed Boavista when they eliminated Inter with Klinsmann, Brehme and Matthaus and Lazio managed by Zoff with Signori, he realy likes Egypt, even if the last time he left he probably wasn't so happy for different reasons.

True about the grassroots level, but also the quality of managers at professional level who also has impact on the quality of the league.

They will not qualify for every tournament but they will not return to their former level.

America is the largest and richest developed country in the world. Hands down it has the best sporting infrastructure to nurture talent in the world. Why do you think their men’s football team is so unremarkable?

Yeah I know. I memorized his man's career during his era here. He's considered the best foreign manager to manage in Egypt and he transforms the Egyptian football massively during his era. He's a real legend for any Ahly fans like me.

The last time he left was after the Port-Said accident which stopped the Egyptian league for a good amount of time, so it was predictable he would leave, but he still loves Egypt a lot.

And it has over 4 times less inhabitants than China or India.

Or I could actually just use the same argument as with Scotland, very few of their players actually move abroad, Europe to be exact, to play.

Azerbaijan score.. Mustafi pulls up injured and Leno is still useless.

Mabrook to all Egyptians, we'll get there one day!

Bernd Leno is playing like absolute shit here...and Mustafi is fecked.

I see you're not satisfied with your coach, hows that?

It's weird, results wise Cuper can be considered the third most successful manager in our history, but we're playing terrible football on the pitch that I don't even know how we get these results. :D

And it has over 4 times less inhabitants than China or India.

Three things as I mentioned before.

1. Population size = the base talent pool
2. GDP = the wealth to develop the infrastructure to nurture the talent.
3. Experience in international football which in part reflects the strength of the football culture in a country.

You need people + the environment for them to develop + a culture where it is seen as an important aspiration.
