World Cup Qualifiers | October 2017 | Play off draw on Tuesday

Messi wants another chance at the immortal World Cup glory

Messi stepping up again. How Argentina have scored so few goals is tricky to understand with the players they got.

Come on Peru! Really want these guys at the world cup.

My question is why Dybala and Icardi on the bench? Can they not fit in next to Di Maria and Messi? (Not familiar with the Argentinian team)

Same here

They struggle against deep defenses. Ecuador are being stupid, they were winning and started upping the intensity of the game instead of slowing it down

Is south american football always like this? The pitches look twice as big and they look like they play with 8 men each, so much bloody space to run about in!

Their defence is shite, so you are right, but the logic would be at high altitude and a goal up they are knackered in the second half. Far more effective than time-wasting for 90 mins.

Interesting stat - Messi’s now the leading scorer in South American qualifying (all time) with 20.

But surely the Argentinians would be used to high altitude too? Maybe not to such an extreme, but does it make that much of a difference in these games?

It's an aspect of the game I have no experience in.

Edit: Realised you're talking about Argentina's tactics...sorry.

Argentine defense is crap. If they qualify they need to sort it out before the tournament.

The 5 biggest names are in the top 5 atm, expected more suprises.

Means little. Qualifiers have far more games since 98 so you'd expect that. Suárez was on 19, needs a couple tonight I guess.

Argentina always struggle with altitude. Haven't won in Quito since 91, Messi has failed to win in 5. Bolivia notoriously put 6 past them...

It's terrible: ball travels faster (a bigger problem for keepers), sprint and you feel like you have asthma and your lungs collapsed, soon enough the lack of oxygen gives you a splitting headache... Your whole body goes into overdrive trying to compensate, the very skinny Francescoli once shed more than one stone in a single game. And that was without vomiting, I once saw three different players puke on the side of the pitch.

Great fun.
