Criticism of De Gea is just ridiculous - Schmeichel
Peter Schmeichel says it is “ridiculous” that new Manchester United keeper David De Gea has been criticised for his Community Shield performance.
United splashed out £18million this summer to bring in the 20-year-old Spaniard from Atletico Madrid to replace goalkeeping legend Edwin van der Sar.
Schmeichel is following De Gea’s progress closely, after making 292 appearances in goal for the Old Trafford club from 1991-1999.
The great Dane admits he's been asked by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson not to comment much on the youngster while he settles in, but broke his silence after De Gea was criticised for both the goals United conceded in their 3-2 win over Manchester City at Wembley.
"I have promised not to interfere, but will make one comment," Schmeichel told Mirrorsport. "I think it is absolutely ridiculous, listening to people already criticising him after one game.
"Everyone in this country always gets a chance, so what is the point of doing that now?"
De Gea is one of several expensive new faces at Old Trafford, where Ashley Young has joined from Aston Villa and Phil Jones from Blackburn.
Fergie has spent big to try to consolidate their position as Premier League champions.
Schmeichel is confident all the new signings will improve as players at United and help Ferguson rebuild after the retirements of Van der Sar, midfielder Paul Scholes and defender Gary Neville.
He added: “Ashley Young is a great example. Ashley has had a good career with Villa and England and done well, but now he is at United he is 25 per cent better.
“His work-rate, contribution, confidence are all better - everything he does is right. I think once you step into that environment, you become a better player.”
United’s rivals, such as City and Liverpool, have also spent large sums this summer to try to strengthen their squads.
But Schmeichel is not overly-worried and expects Ferguson’s men to have another glorious season.
"People tend to forget that United are the champions, they have spent a lot of money this summer as well," he said.
“Big players have retired and have to be replaced, but there has always been so much youth and talent in that United squad. They are all being groomed to know what it is like to be a United player.
“For 99.9 per cent of the players there, they are at United because they want to be at United and it is their dream move.
“That gives United a little bit of an advantage over other clubs, where some players are maybe there because there was financial pressure for them to be sold.
“At United, everyone is there because they want to be there.”
