I re-watched that goal again, and the ball seemed to change direction and pick up speed simultaneously. I don't know how it can do that, but that's the way it seemed to me.

I think that might account for his delayed reaction.

He should've done better, though.

Good post, btw!

Well Ronaldo does this all the time.
Dzeko hit the ball beautifully. If you watch closely the ball has no spin at all. That's exactly what Ronaldo does when he hits his feekicks. The flight path of the ball becomes totally unpredictable.

Not saying De Gea shouldnt have saved it. The ball was very much saveable nevertheless, but it was a really good effort from Dzeko.

It's one game. Give him 5 and if he continues with the same errors, you bench him for a little bit until he's shown he has fixed them in training.

But a new guy to the squad, his first proper game and he's already being lambasted is stupid. A keeper is all about mentality so at least we get to start to see that part of his game now.

TBF, none of us are lambasting him. Matter of fact, I have a lot of faith in this lad, and am willing him to do well for us.

It's mostly the press who're getting on his case. I won't even go into the Daily Fail headline. They'll eat crow, the useless sacks of shite, believe me.

The kid will be alright.

5 games isn't even two months. If he's our future, he has to first be our present. He's going to start and, bar injury, continue to start. That is the only way he'll improve. Goalkeeper is not a position that affords coddling.

Benching him after five games if he makes a few mistakes doesn't seem like a good idea to me. It'd basically cancel all confidence he might have at the time and would make it really difficult to recover. A goalkeeper needs to know that his position is solid to build on that.

De Gea was at fault for the second goal. No excuse.

But he also saved two hard shots when he showed excellent reactions. He's in a new team and country. Still learning and all. I have very high confidence in him. Everybody makes mistakes,, let's not forget VDS last year against WBA, and this even can not compare.

After January we'll have a better picture, but for now it's too early to judge.

So in summary....

yung 'n lernin

needs to bulk up

Watch it back in slow motion and then watch it again in real time.

That ball swerved so much, There was no spin on the ball at all.

Not saying he couldn't have done better but lets not pretend it was an easy routine save to make. The Defenders should NEVER have given him that much room to make that strike.

I think Vidic was caught in two minds, wheter to push up higher and potentially leave a gap or to risk the attacker having a shot. Mind you the midfield should've been more alert to it aswell.

Yeah, Vidic should've made an attempt to at least try to block the shot, but when you concede from 30 yards I don't think De Gea is off the hook. I mean, he could see the ball flying, there was no one to block the view. Anyhow, I think he had a good match overall, when you count the distribution and the 2 saves.

Agree with that, He didn't have the best of game both him and Ferdinand were at fault for the first goal.

As mentioned earlier in this thread VDS Conceded a very similar goal to Messi.

I think the blame is 50/50 on the keeper and the defense.

I thought he did fairly well pre-season and in the CS, Not perfect but we've not brought the finish article. Again though that swerve on the ball was Ronaldo-esq. Was not easy to deal with.

This is ridiculous. He has played only one match for United and we are reading so much into it?

He just did not judge the speed of the ball correctly for the second goal. Its a nothing issue really. He will learn from this. The only way for him is forward.

Fact is he's a far, far better prospect than the tripe we had to put up with after Schmeichal left, and before we got VDS.

No one doubts his talent and that he will brilliant in a couple of years. Good that he made his mistakes early, now he knows what will come and he can improve

I recall VDS letting in quite a spate of long rangers a couple of years back - then it just stopped. There was little criticism of him because he'd already established a track record

i've been standing outside his house and shouting at him since sunday evening. i start with a simple "david?" "daaaayyyy-vid" and then he pops his little beardy face out from behind the curtains and i shout "you're fecking shit, feck off back to france you stupid shit wanker"

it was an awful goal to concede and nothing like the same as van der sar's against messi in the final last year and i expect a 20 year-old keeper to never make a mistake, especially in his first real game at a new club, in a new country, against bitter rivals, in a show-piece game, at wembley. hopefully someone will give us a couple of million pounds for him or a few turnips or something and we can sell him sharpish before we start to concede 15 goals a game due to his clear ineptitude. maybe we can get bosnich back on a bosman or something before the end of the window. if david stays then god help us all.

i won't give up the good fight though, i shall remain outside his house calling him crap.

Laying on the sarcasm/satire a little thick, aren't ya?

I'd stick out my neck and claim that despite the clanger (for the 2nd one), he will go on to become our 1st choice goalie for many, many years. Viva De Gea, Glory Glory United!!!

I could tell by the way he looked unfazed and his confidence was not jolted after his mistakes. That's a great sign for a goalie. Confident in his abilities

One thing I'm seriously pissed off with hearing is how De Gea was possibly at fault for the first goal - why's Joe Hart not getting the same stick then? Is it simply because De Gea was possibly at fault for the second goal as well that people keep mentioning the first?

Their first goal and our first goal were practically identical in terms of where the players started, where they ended up and the keepers 'failure' to stand tall as the ball went in the net

Because Hart is English and De Gea is a young Spaniard.

Nah Hart is comfortably being hyped as England's number 1. He's a safe room with Lampard, Gerrard and Wilshere now.

Criticism of De Gea is just ridiculous - Schmeichel

Peter Schmeichel says it is “ridiculous” that new Manchester United keeper David De Gea has been criticised for his Community Shield performance.

United splashed out £18million this summer to bring in the 20-year-old Spaniard from Atletico Madrid to replace goalkeeping legend Edwin van der Sar.

Schmeichel is following De Gea’s progress closely, after making 292 appearances in goal for the Old Trafford club from 1991-1999.

The great Dane admits he's been asked by United manager Sir Alex Ferguson not to comment much on the youngster while he settles in, but broke his silence after De Gea was criticised for both the goals United conceded in their 3-2 win over Manchester City at Wembley.

"I have promised not to interfere, but will make one comment," Schmeichel told Mirrorsport. "I think it is absolutely ridiculous, listening to people already criticising him after one game.

"Everyone in this country always gets a chance, so what is the point of doing that now?"

De Gea is one of several expensive new faces at Old Trafford, where Ashley Young has joined from Aston Villa and Phil Jones from Blackburn.

Fergie has spent big to try to consolidate their position as Premier League champions.

Schmeichel is confident all the new signings will improve as players at United and help Ferguson rebuild after the retirements of Van der Sar, midfielder Paul Scholes and defender Gary Neville.

He added: “Ashley Young is a great example. Ashley has had a good career with Villa and England and done well, but now he is at United he is 25 per cent better.

“His work-rate, contribution, confidence are all better - everything he does is right. I think once you step into that environment, you become a better player.”

United’s rivals, such as City and Liverpool, have also spent large sums this summer to try to strengthen their squads.

But Schmeichel is not overly-worried and expects Ferguson’s men to have another glorious season.

"People tend to forget that United are the champions, they have spent a lot of money this summer as well," he said.

“Big players have retired and have to be replaced, but there has always been so much youth and talent in that United squad. They are all being groomed to know what it is like to be a United player.

“For 99.9 per cent of the players there, they are at United because they want to be at United and it is their dream move.

“That gives United a little bit of an advantage over other clubs, where some players are maybe there because there was financial pressure for them to be sold.

“At United, everyone is there because they want to be there.”

Wasn't it Schmiechel who said Lindegaard wouldn't be a good signing for United? Before he even played a game for us...

Speaking of Schmeichel...I know it's a daft thing to say, but watching videos of him again just made me remember how fantastic he was. Casillas said that he was his idol, likewise De Gea

Wasn't it van der Sar?

Both, but he called Schmikes the best.

David De Gea: My heroes were Man United legends Schmeichel & Van der Sar - 101 Great Goals

Q. Which goalkeepers do you admire?

A. I look at several. But there is no perfect goalkeeper. Each one has flaws and virtues. Van der Sar was one of the best. But I also like Buffon, Casillas and Valdes.

Q. When you were small, who did you want to emulate?

A. I liked Peter Schmeichel, when he was at Manchester United. He’s the best I’ve ever seen.
