UK Riots (with the exception of Manchester which has its own thread)

The left wing drive me crazy sometimes, London is being pushed to the brink of paralysis, the police are unable to ensure the safety of the public and their property, yet somebody gets snotty because a suggestion is made to suspend a website that is unwittingly aiding those responsible.

What do you think of the concept of a state of emergency? What do you think of the Civil Contingencies Act? What do you think about the protection of the rule of law?

Just as well you were not around in the Second World War when we had less civil liberties than at anytime in the last two hundred years, in order to protect liberty.

Not that I don't think they're right to do it... not that I'm not just like them... but that is still just indisputably hilarious.

I bet Mockney's there...

Seriously, what do you suggest? Report after report is coming in of how social media is being used to the advantage of rioters so they have to be taken out of the equation, mass communications of this nature are too dangerous right now.

Those reports were comical though; beyond the circulating BlackBerry messages which were published how is it that social networks are actually being used, beyond groups of friends communicating? BBC experts were spouting last night about Facebook and Twitter, but honestly are we supposed to imagine that hundreds of rioters were all friends on Facebook or following each other on Twitter? There is no way that these things were used for some kind of mass co-ordination, and benefits of having working communications in areas where buildings were burning last night almost certainly outweigh the potential for limiting the rioters' effectiveness.

I don't have a major problem with it myself, I am not a libertarian. I am pointing out your hypocrisy at the barrage of criticism you directed at Labour for restricting civil liberties, when doing the exact same thing yourself at the drop of a hat.

What are you on about? As I have always said, the biggest civil liberty is the rule of law, that without it all other liberties are severely weakened as there is nobody fully able to protect and guarantee them.

I despised large swathes of Labours anti-terror legislation, I despised their move toward ID cards and the database, I despised their ridiculous 1-km restricted protest zone around Parliament Square. What I have never despised is the police reacting to criminal behaviour and rioting, and being able to react as necessary.

No really no.

So there were no criminals at G20 or Student Protests?

Behave

The large majority weren't, but I think it's unfair even to begin comparing student protests with what's happening here.

Sadly I think if the Police are to blame then it's not the bobbies on the ground, it's the politics at the top.

Police should adapt to the situation really, students shouldn't be kettled/looters should.

Sounds easier than it is, granted, but it's obvious now that these are just rioters/looters and so the level of police control should be increased. By control, I don't mean aggression per se, but I mean...feck I've lost my drift.

They were comical to you perhaps, but considering just how under strain the authorities are and dire the situation is, any very visable sign that the Government will do all that is necessary to maintain law and order is required. Anything that makes it more difficult to coordinate or communicate en masse with other thugs should be considered right now.

From the words of the former commander yesterday, it would sound like this is the case, a lot of frustration amongst the police out there with senior members of the force.

The middle class:

Thank tha Police! TH-THANK THA POLICE.

I think Brian would probably sell his soul to the devil if it meant he could go back in time to relive the days of British Imperialism.

He probably still wears a safari suit on a Sunday, though. So he can sip a cup of Lapsang Douchong out of a bone china tea-cup and gently ponder what might have been. If only. If only...

picture the scene - you are trying to contact your family in one of the affected areas to make sure they are ok but there is a communication blackout...

its not going to work is it....i think they can use the messenger/social media to identify those involved and deal with them accordingly

those kids were going to be on the streets with or without facebook/twitter

That clean up is pointless. Im sure alot of the vandals who did it last night will see this clip and think 'hell yea, lets mess it up again'. They are that stupid to think this.

I reckon tonight will be another night of violence. Im still thinking Wood green will get turned over and possibly Shepherds bush.

Here I am, wanting nothing more but to see people be able to live their lives in peace and safety, yet others feel too inconvenienced if a single website goes offline, or if mobile coverage is disrupted.

I fear what the reaction would be amongst some people if there is to be a State of Emergency.

I am going to say a few things here that people won't like.

I wish I could be arsed digging up the Student Protest thread as it is unbelievable the amount of hypocrites that have manifested themselves in here.

What do people expect from the Police?

The attitude from the media and general public after the G20 and Student Protests was abysmal towards the Police.

You are now in a position where you have cops that are scared to use force as people like you will not only see them lose their jobs, but strung up in court facing criminal charges for doing so.

Not only that, the Police have been cut so brutally, you are now going to see the effects. No one was keen to speak up for the Police, all that was said is "well you don't deserve your wage increase", "your pensions are too much", "make cops work until they are 65" etc etc...

The country should be embarrassed as should the government.

Hope all my colleagues come home safely.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. Gotta love this country.

*Applause for police car dies down*

JAMES: I've just spoken to the sergeant there... oh sorry, I'm James...
CROWD: Hiya, James!
JAMES: Hi. They've told us we can't go in now, as they have important police work to do [subtext: can you all please feck off, squire?], but get some sturdy gloves and bin-bags, and come back about one-ish. In the meantime, maybe have a spot of lunch?
CROWD: Wooooo!

Satan's surely too canny to get scammed into paying twice? ;)

I'm not sure that's going to stop anything, but reducing mobile coverage is disastorous.

I didn't want to laugh but that video cracked me up.

If they can use Twitter to communicate, it can be monitored by appropriate authorities and used to track and predict where they will show up next. Shutting it down would drive communication into means that couldn't be tracked or used against the looters.

You should look up what civil rights people had in the Second World War, you should look at the restrictions placed on the media, you should look up the Defence of the Realm Act (DORA) from the First World War.

In all major wars, and in a state of an emergency, some normal and typical rights and procedures are suspended in order to deal with the situation before normal service can resume.

Never have so many art's degree holders cleaned up so much.

Bold bit is actually "unfortunately, because it's a crime scene, they're going to have to go in and do all the jolly good police work that police have to do at crime scenes..."

You've butchered it.

Wait on we have rising unemployment and falling growth rates - and you want to increase the population.

You can't tax people who don't work.

The biggest scam all these governments have performed is that they have instead of dealing with issues of low growth their solution is to have increased the population - remeber the factors of proudction - land labour capital and entrepreneur.

You reap what you sow.

This lady sounds like this is the best thing to ever happen on LBC.

I've just come back through Leicester Square and Hackney and some shops are already shutting down, though it was pretty quiet. I'm also hearing Barking is already getting tasty, and down in war torn Dagenham it's all planned for kick off at 3.

We are definitely in for another night of it.

Organic juice bar ruined, the middle classes are defeated.

It's fecking shocking, but it appears the rioters aren't actually attacking their own community anymore.

Don't get it lads, you're all appalled about the violence, looting and rioting. Yet you take the piss out of people who clean up the mess the next day (for free). Fair play for them bothering to do it IMO.

I find it hilarious how they have a set time for these things. Like, the clock hits the hour mark and suddenly they start throwing petrol bombs.

cnuts

It's called making a stand and sticking together. It probably wont make any difference to the over all picture but it shows that a lot of people DO care.

So therefore it ISN'T pointless.

 you're right. Also, he might be called 'Jase', not James, which would be even better.

Sturdy gloves!
