Berbatov | Fulham player

For one reason or another Berba has become Rooney understudy though he was bought originally with other ideas in mind currently this is his role. The problem is he plays very differently to Rooney. His short passes and lay offs are similar to Rooney but after a layoff Rooney heads towards goal whilst berba will stop or amble forward. He won't spread play with cross field passes either or run with the ball or press like Rooney. He's about 50% of Rooney but more Germaine is that the team needs to adapt to his style which takes time assuming they can.

The likes of Rooney would appreciate playing with a good midfield behind them but if they dont have one they will adapt their play and get one with it. However it seems with berba he is unwilling or unable to adapt so for him to excel he needs everything in place but everyone knows that hardly happens consistently over the course of the season. So when thing are ameniable to Berba he's pure class but when its not he seems subpar.

He won't be at united much longer. If he not gone onJanuary then the summer.

Dont think so. if we just rejected 18mil from PSG i dont think SAF intends to sell him. unless he has a real shocker of a season ofcourse which i dont think he will. we're unlikely to get anything close to that much for him again.

I think PSG asked about Berba availability but SAF said not for sale. I dint think a firm offer was made.

perhaps. 18mil might have been bollox. but my point would stand regardless, no other club would pay as much as them for berba. SAF would know that. if he said no to them, its unlikely he'l sell to someone else unless berba himself asks for a move.

If Berbatov is Rooney's understudy lets just hope Rooney is fit all season.

I didn't think Berbatov was playing the support striker role the whole time he was on the pitch, I remember thinking it was weird how Owen was playing deeper than him for a fair portion of the game.

I also think it's a bit much to be drawing conclusions from this one game. Before yesterday Stoke had played twice at home so far this season, against Chelsea and Liverpool, and not conceded a single goal.

In the game yesterday it wasn't just Berbatov who didn't manage to do much for us in attack, the same goes for Young, Owen and Anderson. Basically all our attackers aside from Nani struggled to make much of an impact. Now, is this because they all coincidentally happened to have a crap game at the same time, or is it possible it was something to do with those 10 big feckers in red and white out there whose job it was to stop United playing well?

not a big fan of his game but he was in a funny set up - injuries and the lot. but if there weren't he might not get in the first 11 , so a missed chance i guess.

I know we've said we have an option to extend his deal for another year, but I can see us releasing him at the end of the season. It may be a bit wierd as we could have made some money out of him last summer, but I just can't see us giving him an extended contract.

Cant see us releasing him for free.

What is the deal with this extra year? Do both parties have to agree to extending it?

If not it could well be another season where Berbatov will get limited chances with Utd. Unless we extend it and then sell him right away

Don't be such a hypocrite Sharky, you are just as guilty of rose tinted specs regarding Evra.

We each see things subjectively to suit our own opinions, the difference is you take people to task for doing it with Berba, whilst in the same breath doing exactly the same with Evra.

Evra and Berba are extremely different, I was the first to say that paddy had a poor season last time around, the Berba lovers on here though, they could never do such a thing.

Evra has had one below par season (not including his 1st half season between Jan-May)

I have been avoiding this thread of late. I dont know why you even need to defend Evra who could actually become a bit of a legend at at the club if he stays a few more years.

fergie comes out and gives him the "i have all the confidence in the world" kiss of death , extend him to sell him. no way they let him walk after 30m quid.

It's not that he is a scapegoat per se, it's that he visibly diminishes our attacking impact in the games we underperform in, which is an easy thing for anyone to pick up on when they are already pissed off with a poor result or performance

maybe not but his post is funny

Just a coincidence that often in said games the midfield tends to get overrun by the opposing midfield. But let's blame Berbatov.

His supporters are certainly loyal.

My stance on Berba hasn't changed. He's a wonderfully gifted football but just is not right for the club and it's been evident since day 1. It just hasn't worked out for whatever reason. I personally think his way of play just doesn't compliment the way we play.

That has what I have said all along. He was basically a panic signing in the sense of the phrase/term. Anelka fit United's style to a tee.

I support Berbatov as he's a very likeable player and quite a talent. He's the kind of player that would have excelled in the old Bergkamp role at Arsenal or Cantona for United. He's probably better suited to Italy perhaps. Or back with Spurs though they'd have to drop van der Fart.

Panic signing? I don't agree with that at all.

seemed like he was part of that midfield - he spent a lot of time 30 to 40 yards from goal. one could complain about midfield but it was ripping the opposition apart. i don't see him in the current set up and i guess it's horses for courses. not the easiest game to come into to be fair. the team was put together on a shoe string with the injuries.

Cantona and Bergkamp would not only walk into our team right now but would also be amazingly good. Both were proper world class players.

Indeed.

We all hope Wayne is fit all season regardless. He's our most important player.

I'm starting to think Nani is as important as Wayne.

Unfortunately Berbatov is bound to get blamed because in every game that he under-performs, the midfield can't always be playing poorly. The common denominator is Berbatov, especially since we'd scored 21 goals in 5 games prior to this match. This common denominator leads me to think that his lack of movement results in the midfield not having the option that Rooney/Hernandez give, who make both midfield and themselves look good.

To be honest "the midfield" is often the biggest scapegoat when our strikers are playing poorly. It happened with Rooney during his poor 18 months, apparently the midfield was bad for this entire period too to according to many.

Why are we always on Berbatov's cae, wondering when he might be sold or storm off the training pitch. He is a professional footballer who understands his role in the team and sees the bigger picture. Everyone wants to play its not possible, the Manager has that task of managing all the ego's.

Berbas 2 starts this season have been in away games. He's always better at home as his record shows. At home we have more possession and territory and teams tend to sit back which suits berba.

I am sorry, I am not a Berba-hater, for the record I am happy he is staying since I do not want us dependent on Welbeck and Owen as back up for our front two. But the excuses that get trotted out for any poor or sub par performance of Berba are very funny.

Nothing against your argument, may actually be right. But as a player it goes against him that so many excuses/arguments have to made for him.

How the hell is that worked out? He's near the end of his contract and not exactly tearing up trees. 15 million would be a very good price for him these days

The 30-year-old Bulgarian made his first Premier League start of the season at the weekend against Stoke City, and is likely to regain his position in United’s Champions League game against Basel on Tuesday due to injuries.

There have been doubts over the future of last season’s joint Premier League top scorer as United’s first-choice attackers have shined, with Wayne Rooney netting nine goals from just five games, including two hat-tricks.

Despite such dazzling form from United’s front men, Sir Alex has maintained that each player has a role at the club, insisting Berbatov is still a vital part of the team.

"Of course he's got a part to play," he told Sky Sports News.

"He's one of our squad members and they've all got a part to play.

"We have a lot of games in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and Carling Cup. It's an exhausting season unless you use your squad.

"I don't have to reassure him. He knows his place in the squad and that applies to many players, like Mame Diouf, Federico Macheda and Michael Owen. They're not playing regularly either.

"We've only had six Premier League games and the ones against Benfica and Leeds, so it's still early doors. There's plenty of time.

"It's hard because of the number of strikers we have. There's Rooney, Hernandez, Michael Owen is also there and we've got [Danny] Welbeck, Macheda and Diouf, so it's not easy."

United have made a stunning start to the season and have not been short of goals, and Sir Alex added that each of his players understands their roles at Old Trafford and accepts that they will be rotated.

"They understand that having a big squad gives them a better chance of winning things," he said.

"They accepted that a long time ago, the squad system, and they want to do well when they get the opportunity because, as a group, we all want to do well. So I don't have any issues with that at all."

the part that struck me.

Welbeck is definitely 3rd choice now. Only SAF could make the premier league golden boot winner 4th choice.

SAF hasn't done that. I think irrespective of what happens the season before SAF gives everyone a fair chance to excel if you don't take it then you can only blame yourself.

Both Rooney and Hernandez injured and we can replace one of them with last season's Golden Boot winner. I'm not complaining at all. That's what I call strength in depth.
