Welbeck

It's amazing he was playing like a world beater last year at Sunderland, and people on here still thought we'd sell him.

Watching him play for Sunderland made me a believer.

Before that he looked clumsy and slow.

The lesson: be patient with the players that are going through growth spurts. Not everyone is Wayne Rooney at 16.

Credit to himself in the second half, never dropped his head or stop trying for the team

One of the few positives to take from the game.

Amazing he'd be the only manc out of 22 players.

Which also makes it amazing that he was almost actively disliked by a few posters on here during his formative years.

It seems he is still disliked by several posters. It is such a sad situation.

However, I have always rated Welbeck, and even a year ago I claimed he was a better footballer than Chicharito, when this was a very unpopular opinion.

Is there a reason you feel this is important to point out? Aside from the comedy value, of course.

He has every right to if what he says is true. The youngsters arent ever factored in to our plans by half of the posters on here, their answer is always to spend money. It's frustrating is hell trying to discuss youngsters coming into the team as people treat you as though you're a mad man. The general response is 'they're not ready yet'. As I've said before, the youngsters will never be considered 'ready' to some, until it smacks them between the eyes when they're putting in motm performances against top teams.

I argued Welbecks case until I was blue in the face when in the newbies so I feel justified in what I said now. Not a lot of people could comprehend the thought of Welbeck becoming a starter this season...now look what's happened.

Yep, well said and I'm glad Fergie doesn't share the same trepidation as some of our supporters when it comes to giving young players that are clearly destined for big things their opportunity even with supposed bigger, more established names he can pick already within the squad or the big name marquee signings he can easily bring to the club and which most of our fans see as the solution to any issues most of the time despite the talent and potential that our youngsters have and continue to show.

From all the wreckage of yesterday, only Welbeck and Smalling could truly hold their head up and say they performed anywhere near the standards expected of a Manchester United player, and considering their youth and relative lack of experience it kind of shows up some of the reluctance to embrace the potential already within our ranks when it comes to summer after summer of doubting young players who may have had a rocky spell during the season or hankering after the latest must-have signing who inevitably ends up in Spain or at City.

I think Welbeck has been brilliant in these last two games. He's obviously had a great start to the season but I think he's just starting to return to the level he was at last season. He keeps the ball brilliantly and is looking very dangerous with his link-up play and movement. Could of had a goal or two yesterday, especially when Hernandez overhit that pass to him. Should of had an assist for the cut back to park too.

I fecking love Welbeck. I genuinely dont understand how some of our fans can dislike him, it really puzzles me. I can understand to an extent, if they dont rate him as a player, thats fair enough you're entitled to your own opinion, but to wish bad luck on him and hope a that a local lad - an extremely talented one - doesnt make it, is really bewildering.

What makes it more puzzling is that he seems like a likeable guy, too.

Its one of the strangest aspects of the modern football fan. There huge difference displayed in the support shown to individual players. Cant figure it out personally.

I still think he's got some physical developing to do, which is a scary thought. As good as his touch and technique are, he still looks gangly and clumsy at times which should hopefully iron itself out by the time he's 22/23. He could be a very very good player.

I still think he has some problems with knowing when to release the ball as well as when to take a shot and how to set his body in preparation to get maximum power whilst stiking the ball on the run.

But the only current flaws I see in his game are to do with decision making and confidence both of which will get better the more games he gets for United. As I've said before he has everything in his game to go on become a truly top class player, its just gonna take a bit of time.

He's a fantastic talents and one of the positive surprises this season so far. He'll go all the way, no doubt!

He's been our only offensive player remotely close to his best the last couple of league matches. He's basically created stuff on his own at times. Quite impressive for a man of his tender age. Doesn't seem to shirk responsibility.

SAF has always said this. He's nowhere near his physical peak and I can see him as our Drogba in a couple of years

He lights up even more when Cleverley is around cos those two seem to have this connection and the one touch stuff they do is just awesome to watch. His hold up play is fantastic. hes added goals to his game as well.

im just worried about us playing him out of position (ie wing) just to get him in to the team cos of Hernandez goals and Rooney being our best player.

I'm not suprised Cleverley and Welbeck play well together, they've spent most of their formative years as players together haven't they? Sure you can even see them as kids together at the academy on one old vhs or something.

True. What I'd like to see now is for him to be slightly more direct. He often decides to overplay when he has an opportunity to shoot. He's been a wonderful surprise this season.

And they both like playing one touch footballing, taking 'care' of the ball whilst being not being laborious.

But when him 'overplaying' results in a goal like the one he set up with that backheel for Ando earlier this season, surely even that's being a bit harsh?

My jury is still out so I am neither going to praise nor criticise him, I really want him to be brilliant- mainly because he is homegrown, but I feel it is too early to judge him yet.

People need to remember that he's only 20. Ruud Van Nistelrooy was playing as a centre back at that age.

Do people not like/rate Welbeck or have I been living in a bubble?

Surely a Mancunian breaking through would be nothing short of a delight to us all?

I don't get what the problem is that some seem to have with Welbeck. Even at his current level, Welbeck is good enough to play for us. That should enough to give him some praise at least. The fact that he is going to get better is what makes it really exciting.

So is the jury still out on Hernandez?

In fairness, Hernandez is alot more proven at both Premiership, European and international level than Welbeck.

This is his first season with United as a regular member of the first team squad. He's doing well but alot left to prove.

Not as lethal as Chicharito, but far better in the build-up play. Such silky skills, good burst of pace, good speed of thought and good work-ethic.

How anybody had their doubts about him, after showed himself pivotal in several big matches for Sunderland, is beyond me... I can't recall a better talent having emerged from our academy, with regards to the striker position.
