As of late I've actually been wanting him to be more selfish especially in those matches (I'm sure we can all think of one or two) where we've been dilly dallying with the ball around the edge of the opposition 18 yard box and going nowhere fast. Especially after seeing him whack a Nani special in for Portugal during the international break I have often found myself lately think Nani just have a go. I have no qualms about Nani taking 'it' on himself. He's earned the right often enough in the past couple of years.
I hate to agree with you,
but my last post in this thread was 25 September, its only in the last 2 or 3 matches that he has started to get back to his best. He was our best player in Basle and devastating today.Once Nani & Rooney start operting the way we know they can, all will be well...
Not sure why he was subbed today, what is he being saved for as there is an 8 day break, he wasn't injured was he

Other players shouldn't miss from 3 yards out against Basel and generally be totally feckless in front of goal for a dozen games if they want the right to moan at Nani tbf.
He certainly isn't the best player "by a mile" as you said. My reason for the inconsistent argument is this, if you call Nani incosistent then the same CERTAINLY applies for Rooney, so in what way is Rooney miles better than Nani when both are in top form?
There is nothing in it for me, both are completely devastating in top form.
This "by a mile" rubbish is what I have a problem with. And I certainly don't agree that it's "obvious" Rooney is our best player, Rio, Vida, Evra, Nani can all lay claim to that.
Nar mate, Rooney tries chipping when he shouldn't, way too often. I'm sure other players hate that too, but he's earnt tge right over the years, as has Nani.

Nani when on it is probably our top star player now for me, even above Rooney at the minute. Even when he is having a bad game and frustrating us he can do something dangerous to the other team. The skill he did past two players the other day in the CL was just silly. Couldn't ever imagine Bale or Lennon or Downing do that.

Me and my brother were talking bollocks during the game and we agreed Nani has come out of this recent shit-storm with a lot of credit; he's the man right now, basically. He is the one bringing most of the skill, penetration, and even attitude to the team at the moment. His attitude is first class now, a real United player. Give him the keys to our attack.
If Ronaldo is no longer really counted as a winger you could change the last word in the title of this thread to world. I watched the Barca/Madrid game tonight and neither Sanchez or Di Maria are as good as Nani, in fact watching Nani and Di Maria on the same day had me worrying Madrid might start looking this way for their right-hand side.
The difference between Nani and Rooney for me is their contribution when they are both off form. When Nani is off form, he can still pull a rabbit out of a hat and give you that spark as he is always a goal threat or provides at least 1 fantastic cross per match. When Rooney is off form, however, he can be absolutely horrendous and nothing will go right for him.
When both are on form though I find that there is very little to separate them - both are brilliant players in their own right.

I very nearly said something like this earlier, but felt it was unfair to bring Rooney's name into it. Now that you've done it, I can say I agree! Rather than conforming to the stereotype of the delicate foreigner and the resilient British lad, it's Rooney who can sulk or go head-down at times and Nani who tends to always be looking for the ball and going for it.
Nice to see Nani give Evra a little encouragement when they celebrated his first goal.
He is better than all our attackers bar Rooney.
I remember when people were thinking wtf when Barca wanted to sign Nani at one point and people on here were wondering what Barca saw in Nani. Thank god Fergie had patience with him.

Ability wise, Nani is easily the best winger in the league and possibly one of the best in the world.
He's improved drastically from a couple of seasons ago and is starting to influence games more and more. I think he could still work on his crossing and decision making but I think he is improving is these dapartments too.
One thing is for sure, he is definately a game changer/match winner and is scoring lots of important goals. He's developed into a fine player and is a great asset to have at a time when many believe we are missing a spark of genious.

Agreed. And you dont find many players as selfish as Ronaldo or Ruud, yet they were loved and scored a shit load of goals. With Nani's its always a bit polemic
Vidic is our best player. Nani and Rooney are very good but Vidic has been the best defender in the world for few years and was up there with top 2 or 3 for another few years before that, at worst (I actually think he's been the best almost throughout that period).

Very harsh, he's was running until the final minute, his delivery was poor but Rooney was much worse today. Nani kept getting doubled up on but then you need the guys in the middle and on the opposite wing to step up and give you more space, we were too predictable.
Worth noting that his recent really poor performances came after being switched from left to right wing.
Agreed, I said at HT we needed Rafael on a RB, Valencia right and Nani left.
Its odd because up to now I've always thought he was far better on the right.

He seemed to be marked out of the game today, normally that would free up other players but today it did not. A change to the left might have been worth trying.
He had a shot from 40 yards tonight when he had Valencia outside unmarked..... I'd expect a bit better to be honest.
Except he does so much more than beat the man and cross it when he's on form. It sounds like a description of Valencia the way you put that.
Actually, he was fairly good against Blackburn in the first half (not great, but still probably our best player) when he was on the right, and then was crap in the second half when switched to the left. Not that it's got anything to do with it at the moment. Actually, today I was hoping he'd move over to the left today so having Valencia and he on opposite sides might give them more space.
To be honest Pogue, over the last six months it feels like you're saying something like this after just about every good match on the left/poor match on the right that he's had. It's never been about individual performances, it's about consistency. This season I don't think there's been any difference in his consistency between left and right, but there certainly used to be. If he continues being equally consistent on either side then people will stop commenting on it.
Correct. This is because, over the last 6 months, he's generally been as good, if not better, on the left than he has been on the right.
Which is something that needs pointing out, in response to the large amounts of comments in previous seasons that he had to be played on the right to get the best out of him. A concept I disagreed with at the time and has since been proven to be false.
