Sir Ryan Giggs

A very random bump. But I was wondering what is considered to be Giggsy's best season at the club?

I would go for 1993/94

He was in great form that season on the left wing. He also hit double figures in goals that season. There was also talk that AC Milan were going to sign him for £15m that season.

Then the season after he probably had his worst season at United. He looked out of form for most of the 1994/95 season.

Thanks for that. I was too young to really remember/appreciate football during the 90's, and one criticism I've read of Giggs was his lack of consistency.

I of course remember THAT goal in 99 against Arsenal. But I don't know what he was like during that season for example? Just want to know more about our legendary Welshman!

Call me a cnut, but whenever he drives me insane with a poor performance he still looks like our most creative player. Some of the failed hollywood passes have driven me mad.

henrywinter Slightly forgotten amidst the St James' chaos was an #mufc landmark. Ryan Giggs' 757th start, breaking Bobby Charlton's record. Kudos
.........

He's been injured a lot in that time, and in recent years hasn't started THAT many games. Charlton would start every time. The fact that Giggs passed the appearance record ages ago but the starts record only now shows how often he has been used from the bench.

rotation and hamstrings.

also......about 5 years ago, ronaldo rooney, nani tevez days he was far from first choice

Giggs aims to play on

Ryan Giggs has admitted he plans to stay at United for at least another season.

The veteran midfielder continues to shine despite reaching the ripe old age of 38 and remains a vital cog in the Reds' machine.

In an exclusive in-depth interview in the latest edition of Inside United, the club's official magazine, Giggs confirms he is keen to prolong his glittering career.

When asked if the aim is to play on beyond May, the former Wales international replied: "Yeah, it is at the moment. We'll sit down pretty soon and see what we want to do but, at the moment, I feel good and I want to carry on."

The prospect of playing into his forties brought a laugh and the response: "Now that one's a question! You can't see it but we'll see.

"When that changes [having a big influence on the pitch], then that's when I'll want to stop.

"But I feel like I'm still an influence on and off the pitch so I'll carry on."

Sir Alex, also speaking exclusively to Inside United, confirmed that another new deal is in the pipeline.

"We certainly hope so, yes," he replied when asked if Giggs can carry on for another year. "There has been no discernable detrioration in his play whatsoever and, in that sense, why shouldn't he stay on another year?

"Obviously, it's entirely up to Ryan himself but I don't see any reason why he can't continue."

There's newbies complaining that we haven't moved Giggs on...mental, eh? Only two players in the top 6 have more PL assists than him this season, one of which is from our team, and people still can't see past the fact he's 38.

 The guy's mental. Defines legend. How many wingers can play at the top level into their 30s when their pace has left them? How many change their game from winger to creative midfielder, and play until they're 38? Unprecedented.

The thing is his pace hasn't really left him. He's nowhere near as quick as he was, but he's not particularly slow for a top-level pro, and on the ball he's quicker than many.

You have to also think that the club take very precise measurements of each player's speed, acceleration, jump etc....The moment his physical wherewithal starts declining, the club would be the first to know. For now the club and the fans are happy with where he is at. Why not continue on another year?

Right. Er, is he quick or slow then? You seem to disagree with yourself here...

In the Liverpool game, I noticed him thinking about taking players on and then thinking better of it - first time I've noticed it and to me a sign he doesn't trust his pace as much as he has done.

I'm not sure it matters though as he needs it less playing centrally.

He used to be fast as feck, and is a fair bit less fast now

However, I don't think he's slow by most players' standards, he's about average

Running at speed with the ball under control is very hard, and Giggs can still do it at a faster speed than most players, because of how skillful he is.

It was all when up against Kelly. My take was that he thought Kelly was crap and that he could do him quite easily, but found he was actually a tougher proposition than he'd assumed, and had to rethink mid-move.

Yes he is slower than he once was but he is still fast with the ball.

He ran a very young and athletic Ramsey ragged 2 weeks ago.

It's mental, people still go with the whole "Giggs is too old to play against top teams in CM" line too.

Not even taking into consideration the fact Carrick and him were our two best players in our CL run last season, dominated Arsenal, Fulham and Liverpool all this season (away from home too). He's still a top class player and one of our best.

He was really sloppy today but was still probably our most positive attacking player, and came up with a peach of a cross for the moral winner

His work-rate was also fantastic, made a few tackles today

I thought he was good, so crucial to most of our attacking play and one of the few players to break through chelseas defense

I dont think its sloppiness as such its just the way he plays trying to open things up but you take that for what he brings to the team. He's very creative, its a bit like I said in the other thread he's very simular to Rooney, they are never going to have passing stats like Scholes or Carrick because they constantly try to create chances for the team.

On Giggs it is amazing he's playing that well at his age its like all that exeprience has turned a world class winger into really excelllent central midfeilder although obviously we have to pick and choose his games. I can see him playing a simular role next year too its such a bonus to have.

I thought he was poor. I spent the whole match criticizing him.

But as someone pointed out, despite being poor he always has the ability to set up a goal or score one himself. Which he did. Happy days.

I absolutely agree with you, Giggs gives the ball away a fair bit - and is expected to by the staff - because he actually tries things that aren't obvious.

But in the first half I thought he gave it away a bit too much.

the guys delivery of a cross is damn near perfect.

they aren't obvious because it's a pass that won't get to the person he intends it to go to so he just wastes it too much

i'd rather him keep possession, run back with ball if there isn't a pass on. Look at Valencia, if he doesn't see an opening, he won't pass it, he'll hold onto it, or even run back 20 odd yards and just keep the play flowing.

when giggs is in a good position, he puts in a great delivery, as proven today and against arsenal which he shoves down my throat after me moaning at him all game...

His threaded passes through the middle, and little flicks with the outside of his boot are really amazing.

He also seemed to have more of an engine on him than Mereiles or Essien. Which is remarkable.
