Gerrard is the complete midfielder but not as good as someone like xavi or scholes.

Being good at a lot of things doesn't make you the best.

Besides van persie is pretty much good at everything. He doesnt ping 40 yard passes across the field but he is more lethal at the moment and more likely to produce a moment of individual brilliance. Although I would like to wait and see if he can keep it up.

Rooney has a higher potential though. And has reform better for longer. I'm only taking van persies current level into consideration.

Gerrard could never control a midfield the way a Xavi or Scholes can. It's an attribute any elite midfielder should have, the ability to dictate the tempo of a game by playing the right pass.

On the topic of RVP and Rooney, I don't think there's a lot between them. People forget how injury prone RVP was in his earlier days and how much of a season he'd miss just as it looked like he was starting to get going. Technique-wise I'd take RVP over Rooney (And I do think he'll become more like Bergkamp as a classic number 10, when he goes into his 30s), but Rooney being younger (and more fitter in terms of his career so far) than RVP will play to his advantage in terms of his overall potential.

Do you still rate Pedro as better than both?

No.

I normally defend Rooney a lot but everything aside thought his workrate incomparison to the chelsea game was a bit low? Yes?

Great stuff from him today and for me it's in his best position. He'd get more goals playing as the furthest forward but I think he brings so much more to the team playing in this role. His link up with Welbeck is looking really good too.

He's on a great scoring streak. Good for us. Playing like a leader right now these past few games.

Rooney has scored this season v Spurs, Arsenal (3), Chelsea (3), City (2), Liverpool (2). So we'd take 50m from Madrid for him eh?

Obviously injury held RvP back but, without being harsh, who cares? He can't have those years back. There's no point is speculating how good he may have been during those years when he was missing half a season every time because he was crocked.

He's steered clear of injury now and he's filled his boots, but to be fair every attack ends up with him on the end of it. Mid table sides often set up in this manner, with one front man doing a disproportionate amount of the goal getting work. Look at Ba at Newcastle/West Ham United (who's also had a great 2011/start of 2012) for a similar story.

Fact is, RvP has put in an amazing year and a bit of goalscoring. Prior to that, he occasionally flickered. Rooney has been an integral part of a trophy winning machine for the best part of a decade now. I'm astonished that anyone could think RvP is superior "without doubt."

As a slight aside, I recall RvP performing pretty miserably during the Dutch World Cup run to the final in S.Africa. No goals in seven matches didn't make for pretty reading given he was the lone front man.

Van Persie scored against Cameroun !!

I thought this was a fantastic performance from him, even before the goal. Great, quick passing, imaginative, a threat, and great work rate.

A leader today.

1. Charlton - 249(758)
2. Law - 237(404)
3. Rowley - 211(424)
4. Violett - 179(293)
5. Best - 179(470)
6. Rooney - 168(350)
7. Spence - 168(510)
8. Hughes - 163(467)
9. Giggs - 162(898)

Fantastic performance from Rooney. He's unplayable at times.

There are so many muppets on here mate.

You know Wayne Rooney has performed brilliantly when even Sparky_Hughes praised him.

I think he's really developed into a fantastic big game player since Ronaldo's left, fecking brilliant.

It's hard for me to describe but Rooney has mastered a passing technique, it's like he hits a volley but the ball is on the ground.Tough technique but so beautiful when I manage to pull it off

His performance today kind of reminded me of what he did last week. He wasn't brilliant, and didn't control the game like you'd expect him to, but he still scored two key goals for us. I'll happily take that.

17 goals and 3 assists in 22 Premier League games this year. Played a couple in central midfield too. Needs to make the step up this lad.

City would run away with the League if they'd managed to get Rooney imo.

He was brilliant today.

But why did he go up top and Welbeck drop deep towards the latter stages? That made no sense whatseover.

I firmly believe that for the past few years, no matter who wears the captain's armband, our true captain has always been Wayne Rooney. He is easily our most vocal and influential player on the pitch.

21 goals this seasons that's bloody impressive considering it feels like one of his most disjointed seasons in terms of goal scoring since he's been at the club (the early years not included obviously)

No reason why he can't overtake his previous best this season without being the main centre forward as well
