Paul Pogba set to start, Rooney out; Owen back in training - ESPN Soccernet

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson could be set to hand 18-year-old midfielder Paul Pogba his European debut for the club on Thursday against Ajax in the Europa League.

There is much hype surrounding the potential of Paul Pogba
Pogba has been stalling over a new contract amid reports of interest from Manchester City and Arsenal, but Ferguson revealed that veteran defender Rio Ferdinand has stepped in to persuade the French youngster that his future lies at Old Trafford.

"Rio has become an important figure at the club. He is good with the young players," Ferguson said. "At the moment, he's working hard on the boy Pogba and talking to him. The young boy is unsure, but Rio is well regarded by him."

Pogba has been on the bench for United's last five games and could be thrust into action with United leading 2-0 from the first-leg.

''It is possible we could give Pogba a run-out,'' said Ferguson. ''It depends because there are a lot of players who need a game; Nani, Young, Hernandez, Cleverley, Smalling, Jones. Those players will all play tomorrow and we hope to put a sprinkling of experience amongst it.''

However, Wayne Rooney will miss the game after the striker was the only significant absentee from the open portion of training due to a throat infection.

"Rooney's out for tomorrow," said Ferguson. "He has a bad throat. There were traces of it in Amsterdam last Thursday. He has been in bed over the weekend and came in today for the first time and we are trying hard to get him right for Sunday.''

Michael Owen, though, has taken steps on the road to a first-team return by taking part in the session.

Owen has not featured for United since picking up a thigh injury in a Champions League group phase match against Otelul Galati in November, but trained alone at Carrington on Wednesday.

The forward has been plagued by injuries throughout his career, but he appears to still have the resolve to get back to the highest level and is on the recovery trail following a long period of rehabilitation.

The Red Devils will be taking nothing for granted despite the 2-0 lead from last Thursday's encounter.

"The experience we had against Basel, where we were 2-0 up at half-time [and drew 3-3], that's in our memories," added Ferguson. "I don't think we'll be casual or careless about what we're trying to achieve tomorrow but it's a good lead. You can't dispute that."
 
I'm not sure about this Raiola guy being his agent. SAF has said Pogba's changed his agent a few times and Raiola was first mentioned as an advisor to Pogba's camp.

I don't think all hope is lost, I think he'll play tomorrow and I doubt we would bother letting him anywhere near the first team squad if he's nailed on to leave.

It's a bit weird that Fergies suddenly been a lot more open about the situation in the last few days, either he's trying to hurry it up or he's getting a bit sick of him.
 
That quote about Rio and Pogba is suspiciously similar to Fergie's BBC interview. The one he never finished. Wouldn't put it past them to just add a tame, tidy ending to the quote so they could use it.
 
I dont consider losing Morrison as any sort of kick anywhere. That player very clearly is far more trouble than he is worth. Glad to be shot of him. He didnt fit the team culture and where ever he goes will cause problems.

if he is happy want to be in our first-team , he should sign the contract don't expect the club to try and beg him to stay ffs.

I meant more in the sense that its kind of annoying that its happening, but he's only a reserve player so its not the end of the world. When Rooney and Rio, and to an extent Keane did it, it had a hugely negative effect as they were more prominent figures, and it must hurt the team to see one of the leaders of the team seemingly wanting out.

And whilst I agree with your point, there's the danger of looking like a selling club if the Ronaldo scenario repeatedly happened, look at Arsenal or what Tottenham used to be

Regarding Pogba; feck him and feck his fat cnut of an agent. He's an 18 year old kid who's found himself regularly on the bench for Manchester United. If that's not enough assurance for him that the club believes in him and that he's going to make it if he plays well, then feck him. I love to see a youngster come through the ranks as much as anyone, but the problem is here that this kid hasn't done anything to warrant a massive pay-rise from what he's on at the moment. So, if he's being led by his agent who can promise him first team football at Juventus or whatever, then feck him. We shouldn't encourage that kind of behaviour and give him game time if he's not going to sign. If he really wanted to sign he would've signed by now, wouldn't he? What's going to change over the next three months? It's not like we're going to go "oh feck it's just a month left, let's offer him four times as much", and now he's just biding his time and possibly getting games for us while we all hold our breaths and wait for the inevitable move?

I might end up with an egg on my face if he actually signs, but until he does so he shouldn't be playing for us IMO, because we shouldn't encourage kids who haven't made any mark yet (or their agents) to feck us over like this.

Edit: People comparing the wage situation to Jones and the likes aren't thinking this through. Pogba hasn't established himself yet at the top level. If he signs a four year deal here and then goes on to be a revelation next season, he'll get another new contract for sure, like Chicharito did. Jones was a Premier League first-team player for his former club and was probably on £30k for them. It's pretty natural that we have to match that and increase it a bit too in order to persuade him to sign for us and not the other clubs that were sniffing around.

I perfectly understand your feelings and I'm with you all the way but unfortunately for us young talented players and their agents look at it from a different perspective. If they have a possibility to "cash in" they will do so instead of being patient and wait for their chance. Playing for United is huge but for a young man, probably with a anxious family behind him, it's more important to make sure he capitalize on his talent then to be loyal to a foreign club. Especially if he have Mino Raiola around him who will feed his ego with promises and scare him with future negative scenarios.


We probably have to stretch our budget if we are going to keep Pogba. Right or wrong only future will tell but if we don't do it other will.
 
I would love to see Pogba start, I would have picked him except I didn't think Fergie would take such a risk considering our luck this season.

I wonder if he won't start with Carrick to give him an older, steadier partner than Cleverley, but Clev needs a game just a badly as Pogba.

I was being defeatist, I hope he does start. I can't think of any player who needs a game more under the circumstances.

Exactly what I thought and is why I asked where they had got the quote from. But apparently it's from his press conference. Has anyone actually seen the conference and seen Fergie saying that?

Maybe Fergie was really keen to say it after he was cut short in his BBC interview. If it's taken from the BBC interview then they have clearly guessed at what Fergie was going to say next about it.

Man Utd staff reporter is claiming the Fergie quote on Pogba is from todays press conference.I think Pogba is as good as gone.
 
18 years old and on Manchester friggin Uniteds first team sub bench. What more could anyone want???? It's fecking crazy.

maybe he hasn't settled? it could be anything

immediately people think its about money though.....

i think we'll miss this one if he leaves - he looks a cert to be a fantastic player to me
 
If a player no matter how talented doesn't wanna sign a good contract then he can feck off.I'm not surprised that Pogba is looking for his interest though, he did the same at Le Havre.Players have very little moral or respect for their clubs, it's all about them.

It's not just morals they lack, but common sense too. At a club like United, and with so much talent, it doesn't take a genius to realize the financial prospects you could have, if you just think further than the next paycheck. The money argument is just as stupid, if he was to achieve the quality he obviously thinks he has, then he would be rewarded by the club anyway. When you've made it to one of the rare major clubs like United, money should never be an issue, it's obviously going to come if you're good enough, especially at his age.
 
Is that earlier ManUtd.com post just a contraction of what Fergie said in the ESPN article above? I ask because the former implies that the "it's possible" is in relation to him staying, whereas the latter puts it in the context of him playing tomorrow.
 
if he wants to go let him go. He hasnt kicked a ball for the first team and he wont be missed.

However this whole thread is based on rumour of what someone said or didnt say. We should wait until soemthing is confirmed before crying.

How much does he want to earn though, at 18 earning 1-2k a week would be incredible.
 
It's an unmitigated disaster if we lose our most talented two youths in ages within 6 months of eachother.

Couldn't disagree more. Football is going to have to catch up with other sports. These kids are looking at NBA, NFL and MLB players who are making millions.

1-2K is shit in comparison.

Theres players in our squad making millions. Doesn't mean they deserve it before they've proven themselves. I also wasn't saying thats how much he's earning I'm talking about a 18 year old of anythin earning a week would be phenomenal.
 
If he's supposed to be so promising then why isn't he getting more playing time? The class of '92 lot got more time on the pitch at the same stage and weren't as physically developed as Pogba.
Morrison was a wrongun, but this lad isn't.

Doesn't really work like that, it's not like a footballer could just go and switch sports cause they're not getting paid enough in comparison to other sports. At the end of the day the only thing that determines how much they'll get paid is what other clubs are willing to go to.
