Berbatov | Fulham player

“It wasn’t a great season for him last season, partly because I settled more with Wayne Rooney and Danny Welbeck... and Chicharito.

And the same will probably happen this season.

Bringing him on the tour is a good idea, those clubs that are unsure on him should hopefully see him have some game time. I just hope we can actually play him.

He wont get any gametime this year really. Kagawa is another attacking option we've just added. Needs to leave for the good of both parties.

He'll be sold, we're just making out that he isn't being thrown on the scrapheap so we don't get piss taking offers of under £5m with clubs playing hard ball. I'd guess we'd want a good £10m back from him.

He might be 31 but he's never relied on pace so he's got a good 3 or 4 seasons left in him yet.

Indeed we brought Veron on tour before he was sold and he played a blinder. Made me want the club to re think selling him at the time. But as always, Fergie knows best.

Whatever transfer fee United are holding out for will also be a factor.

I'd be surprised if this is true to be perfectly honest. United have a history of letting players leave for reasonable prices when they are surplus to requirements, I can't see Fergie setting an outrageous price of say £15m.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised given his wage package and the fact I'm sure that he knows this will be his last payday contract (so will want a 3-4 year deal) if he was allowed to go for £5-6m.

Last couple of comments are unfair on him. A player his quality and transfer fee is a good investment at 90k pw

You have to take into consideration the entirety of his contract though. You presume he would want to keep his United salary and be offered a package for maybe 4 years. This is a £20m investment before you even discuss transfer or agent fees.

He'll also have in the back of his mind a big signing on fee that he could earn if he left on a free transfer next Summer.

Going on the tour apparently.

I find this strange. I really cannot see Ferguson getting him enough time to play with Rooney, Chicha, Welbeck and Kagawa pushing for 2 positions.

So, if he will stay in the club and play 10 games a season, it means that it will cost us more than 10 millions which I think is very expensive.

That's certainly been true with younger players but not always the case with more senior pros, especially recently. I mean, look at the way PIG ended up running his contract down before he got the move he wanted.

It's almost certainly the wages to how much they rate him ratio. If he were on £50-60k a week there'd probably be 6-7 clubs in the Premier League alone chasing him.

Yeah but you'd think with him being unhappy someone would come in and offer him a chance at first team football on reduced wages... So it'd be his choice. According to Sir Alex nobody is in contact about him

If he sticks around to leave on a free next year, the decision to retain him last summer will wind up costing us £25M/£30M!!!

Not much value there.

There still hasn't been much movement in the striker department. I wonder who could even ponder to go for him. CL football surely needs to be a factor.

I am pretty sure we would have allowed him to leave if a team had made a bid last summer.

Agents make clubs aware of wage demands before they even discuss transfers with the club in question (there'd be no point thrashing out a deal for 3-4 weeks before realising you can't afford wages). The chances are given Fergie's comments he has already put off a fair few clubs with his demands. Lets be fair there'd be clubs queuing up if he was prepared to be paid £50k for instance.

I am pretty sure we would have allowed him to leave if a team had made a bid last summer.

Almost certainly... Again I'm sure wages would have been the stumbling block.

Wasnt that a while ago though? They have just signed Lavezzi and with Pastore and Menez they dont need him

Id prefer to keep him if he would stay. Don't like the treatment he got last season plus we need to spend on other areas urgently and blatantly don't have much money.

Id rather have him as 4th choice striker than rely on young Powell or the shit Macheda.

Agreed.

A player of his quality and wages as 4th choice isnt really a great thing for a club with financial issues.

One last opportunity to see his beautiful technique on display for United

There was more than enough creativity going forward last season when Berbatov wasn't playing.

If the signing of Kagawa is any indicator of SAF looking for even more movement, speed and incisiveness in attack, then the involvement and effectiveness of Berbatov is placed in even more doubt...his sumptious skills notwithstanding.

If he wants the same wages somewhere else that he is getting here then we are going to struggle to sell him.

going on the tour? if I remember correctly we brought Veron on one and sold him at the end of it. Yorkie too I think. the yorke situation seems a little similiar. Fergie had clearly given up on him and made it known he was available but had him around the club til the right offer came in. Still think Berba will be sold sooner rather than later. dont think he is in Fergies plans at all

His wages could be a problem when we try to bring in other players. It's not a bottomless pit and 100k a week spent on a fourth choice striker could be 100k we can't spend on a 1st choice midfielder.

aye - I remember on the US tour Fergie getting a bit tetchy when pushed on the Veron issue, saying "he's not going anywhere and has a future here" or words to that effect. He did his jaw-dropping cross and was gone a few weeks later.

Might as well just cut our losses on Berbs.

I think his words were: "Yous lot are a bunch of idiots; he's a fecking great player".

Just read in the local press that the club turned down an offer for 6 million GBP (7.4 million Euro) for him from Galatasaray. The article says that this is the only offer with a monetary amount that the club have received. All others (it doesn't mention from whom), were just inquiries.

I would not be surprised if such an offer really came in since the president of Galatasaray himself had said that he Berba was their main target.

I wonder what amount the club is expecting to get for Berba? Also, the article mentions that the situation with Nani is also unclear since there is no agreement on the contract extension and increase of his wages. He is currently on 90k GBP/week and the club has offerred to increase to 120k GBP/week but Nani has turned this down. Again, this is what the article says.
