Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

Okay, secretly inside an optimist. Outwardly I have become cynical because of the amount of times we have missed out on our man

I'm not convinced that Fergie knows what a midfielder is anymore.

It's the antithesis of Tiki taka (playing an over-abundance of top-class midfielders to dominate the central area)

We're cultivating Spici-spacker (midfielders? who needs them exactly?)

According to a Croatian newspaper the deal with Madrid is almost done.

For some reason whenever it's a newspaper or site from the players own country I feel it's more valid, where as it's probably not in any way more valid.

That would be the end of Sahin at Madrid. If we could get him cheap it would be a great signing.

In all honesty, I'd prefer Sahin to Modric, though I doubt very much we will bring him in.

I had fears that Sahin was moving to Madrid too soon and wasn't ready for top level football yet. I do feel though that he is the type of midfielder we need, or capable of being it, and we could make something of him soon enough.

As someone said above, I doubt we were ever interested in Modric at the prices being mentioned.

Something about Modric had agreed terms but Spurs are yet to agree on a figure.

The Croatian posters on the posters said the paper with 'sources' about him going to Real is less reliable than the likes of the Sun and Daily Mail.

Though apparently AS are saying something about it? Is that the Barca or Madrid paper? If the latter, then there's definitely legs in it.

Still, if he is leaving this summer, a deal to Real Madrid would probably be the best option for us, especially if we could manage to get a player like Sahin in exchange.

Tottenham ace Luka Modric is reportedly ready to pull the plug on a potential move to Real Madrid.

The Sun were among several publications linking the Croatia midfielder with a summer transfer to Madrid in the past, but the UK newspaper has now claimed that Modric has grown fed-up at the time it is taking to flesh out a deal.

It reports that Modric's camp had set a deadline of July 17 for Spain's La Liga champions to agree a deal in principle or he would explore other options.
One of the stumbling blocks, according to Spanish media, appears to be cash flow issues - Madrid must sell to raise the £35million needed to buy Modric.

The 26-year-old Spurs playmaker is contracted to the club until 2016 and the latest report from The Sun seems to indicate that he would be willing to honour his contract rather than hold out any longer for a move to the Bernabeu.

Last season Modric was pursued by Chelsea under their former coach Andre Villas-Boas, however the Portuguese tactician has just been appointed as the successor to Harry Redknapp at White Hart Lane.
Villas-Boas has already made his first signing at Spurs, brining in Hoffenheim midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson.

Croatian papers are just referring to Marca, As, etc. No exclusive story yet.

Got to say I'd be surprised if he went to Real Madrid. I know they often like to spend a lot of money, but this signing really does seem a little pointless if true. I mean, if it's money he's after City would probably be the more sensible option as he'd be more likely to be playing for them there.

Luka Modric is very close to agreeing a £28m deal from Tottenham Hotspur to Real Madrid.

Reports in Modric’s home country of Croatia say the transfer is at an advanced stage although Spurs are still pushing for a bigger fee, having asked for £40m at the start of negotiations.

Modric, 26, has made it clear he wants to leave White Hart Lane this summer after being refused the opportunity to join Chelsea last year.

The news in Croatia broke on website www.24sata.hr which quoted an anonymous source as saying; "Everything has been resolved satisfactorily. Luka and Madrid agree on everything. Things are a bit more difficult with the position of Tottenham, but everything will be resolved, and quickly."

Chelsea, Manchester United and Paris St Germain have also been linked with the midfield star. Reports in Croatia say PSG have made a bigger bid for the player, but that Modric prefers Madrid.

The Spanish papers say Madrid won't go over €35m (and Spurs asked for €50m initially) - so they'd now sit back and wait it out. However Modric doesn't want to be this summer's Berbatov (or Fabregas), doing the pre-season waiting for a move - so he's told them that if they can't do the deal fast he has to look at "other offers".

Is it true? Who knows. It's certainly plausible.

No way would I pay 50 million euro for him.

Looks like a deadline day special, much like Baines will be with us.

OK, lets predict what will happen.

  • Modric will go to Madrid
  • Madrid will sell Sahin to a German side (Bayern or maybe Dortmund) for a minimal fee (less than 7mil)
  • In 12 months we'll be linked to him for about 30-40mil.

That's just how we roll...

Don't see why someone like Modric would want to go to Madrid to be a squad player when he can be a guaranteed starter at United.

He wouldn't be a squad player. I think he'll be a starter with Alonso in midfield.

Then we will make moves early in the transfer window, the CAF will get excited only to be disappointed as he moves to his 'dream' club Barcelona for 15m less than we were going to pay for him.

Meh. Would. Not. Bang.

Lulz.

I was looking at the quite a few of the German wags in the Euros and they all seem to resemble size zero supermodels. Do German footballers have classier taste than their British counterparts, who seem to go for the page three Essex girl type?

Seems that way.

I find this irritating though if it's true, knowing we are not his first choice.

Not sure I see size zero woman as particularly classy either to be honest, that's just disgustingly skinny! Doubt Khedira's missus is size zero though, no complaints there!
