Rio Ferdinand

Suarez is still in his pocket, rolling around and shouting angrily.

hope he is not injured, it looks like he was playing with pain throughout the game. fantastic performance by rio.

Outstanding... he was an absolute beast today. Man of the match for me (Gerrard had a great game, but ultimately, he ended up on the losing side)...

Still one of the best centre backs in the world - Undesputably the best when in his prime.

He gave us a scare for a while. I thought we were gonna lose yet another CB. But all game he was extremely good at holding his ground and neutralising their attacks. It really does take some skill to stay on your feet and not lunge in, even when the ball appears to be in reach. Rio prefers to wait for his moment and then deal with it cleanly and efficiently.

It's class.

Reminds me of the world class italian cbs that used to rule the game.....impecable positionng.

He had a great game today. Always seemed to be in control and shut down attack after attack. Hopefully his knock is nothing and he is fully ready and fit for the next league game

Best CB i've seen. 1.5 legs is all he needs. Rolls Royce of a defender. Sheer class.

An absolutely heroic performance. I haven't always been his biggest fan (more due to off-pitch issues than anything else,) but that was vintage. In a game where we were so off-form, and in which the conditions couldn't have been more difficult (and in which he picked up an early knock,) he stepped up, Keano-style, and willed us to victory (seems like hyperbole to speak this way about a defender, but I think it's true.)

To look at the bright side of that performance, that's the best I've seen from Rio in quite a while.

We need our CB's to perform with Vidic looking as unsharp as he is.

I've always fancied Rio as our captain as he's the man to spur us one, and I suppose he would've been the captain if not for his injuries.

Against Liverpool, and tbf all this season and last, he has been majestic. I think the myth about him losing all of his pace should be silenced as he easily outpaces the likes of Suarez still; Rio used to keep up with and even outpace Eto'o!!

Glad to see that he gets some praise as I think he is an outstanding CB. Imo, he's the most complete CB I've ever seen when on form.

Just exceptional. Him and Nesta have to be the best of their generation. Not sure he gets the credit he deserves in England. The national team selection is an absolute farce.

Save him for big games and Europe.

He needs to wrapped in cotton. He is too good and too important to risk.

If we use him the correct way, hopefully he can play into his late 30's like Scholes/Giggs.

I think the only person I saw outpace Rio in his prime was Adebayor, funnily enough. Was weird seeing that - I had no idea Adebayor was so fast!

Hope he retires at United, will join an elite group of servants (Don't want to start the legend debate as yet, he still needs to earn it after the Peter Kenyon episode).

Why would you want Rio when you can have the mighty Lionheart JT though?! He does slide tackles and shit init!

I wasn't Rio's biggest fan last season, but he was immense yesterday. Loads of respect for him for playing through the injury and dominating Suarez (not for the first time).

hope he will not answer woy's call, if he receive one. at his age now, no way he should be playing international football. not playing for england should prolong his club career.

feck Hodgson. If Terry hadn't called it quits on England, Rio wouldn't even get a look in with this manager. I hope Rio decides to call time on England and extend his career with us.

Quite a few neutrals I know think Terry is a better defender than Rio. Id be interested to know who is generally regarded as better. In a national poll, I mean, not one on here, which would be a landslide and pretty meaningless.

Yeah, but most supporters go for the spectacular. If Rio has made a slide tackle to knock the ball away from Suarez then everyone would be drooling. But when he stands his ground and just steals the ball from Suarez ever so casually then gently passes the ball to a team mate, no one notice.

If Woy asks him to return, Rio should agree to it and then take to twitter to announce his international retirement with the hashtag "yougotmerkedmuthafecka".

Adebayor was supposedly very fast, but he must surely have lost some pace now. Do you have a gif of that? Rio was really quick, and I believe I read somewhere that he was one of the fastest, if not the fastest 100m runner at United when he was at his prime, and at that time Giggs was no slouch.

I do think Rio has lost a bit leaping power as his aerial abilities are not as strong as they once were - still able to win most duels though, but not as brilliant as he once was in that department, something I suppose also would give some people a reason to believe that Terry is the better defender.

Though I read somewhere that Giggs hasnt run at full pelt since his mid 20s as he was told it was the reason he was having such problems with his hamstrings. So that isnt really a fair contest.

This and particularly the bolded bit

He's so much better than Terry, and every bit as influential as the overhyped racist prick - for some reason he just hasn't had the same avalanche of media hype

Yep

I'd be well annoyed if Rio returned to the national side

nah, he's well past that.

In hindsight, in this modern era of 'player/club loyalty' Ferdinand's record looks ok: He fought hard for a pay increase and once considered his options outside United. His misfortune was to get caught, as Im sure every single brilliant player we have had has been approached and considered options away from Old Trafford ... that goes with the territory of being world class!

He has been an integral and critically important part of our success post the 1999 treble, his personality a core part of the dressing room culture as a very senior player to look unto and his charity work outside football means that he is a club icon. The latter-day Rio of the pat 5 years is as perfect a senior role model as you can get.

Easily gets legend status in my book. And world-class with it too.

Yes yes, which is why the likes of Maldini and Nesta don't get as much recognition in England as they should, if only they put in a few more slide tackles.. sorry mate, it's always a peeve of mine when someone suggests most supporters don't know about the subtler aspects of defending

Really? How about Bellamy for that horrible 3rd City goal when we won 4-3?

Rio was excellent against Liverpool. Hopefully he carries it on as we need some in form and fit defenders.

Agree 100%.

In the current scenario, Rio gains nothing but a few vanitory caps and only England win by him playing: What can it give him that he has not already gained?

Its not sensible for planning purposes to include him for selection at the next World Cup - England need to move onto the next generation ... so at best he is a stop gap until the likes of Cahill, Smalling etc can be relied upon with confidence.

Given Rio's age and injury issues, his longevity as a top class centre-back can be the only criteria applied when considering the games he plays and the training load he takes on. England will not share that philosophy or agenda.

Most importantly, Rio 'owes' England and more importantly Woy Dickface ANYTHING. After the disgraceful way he was humiliated by his omission from Euro2102, he has no moral or patriotic reason to answer any call from his country. He has served England brilliantly for over a decade, England owes him.

I would much prefer he retire from international responsibilities like Scholes and Giggs did and concentrate wholly on the last chapter of his Manchester United career, playing for a manager who gives him the respect he deserves and where there are medals and glory realistically to be won.
