Manchester United vs Newcastle United

Yeh but as KM says, it's a weakened team you'll be playing. I don't know, I just suspect this will be a 3-3 or something ridiculous.

Yeah could well be.

Can't get much worse than losing 1-0 to Leeds anyway.

I think it'll be a strong team for this one, though Buttner may play. Youngsters on bench. The aim will be to get through this one and hope for weaker opposition afterwards to start playing the youngsters. I think this cup is part of the reason so many haven't gone on loan.

Evra might be drafted in to Centre half maybe

Borderline experimental but our choices are running low and it may be a way to cope somehow.

Buttner on left, Pat to centre... at least it would give Rio a time for some rest before Tottenham.

Right, I had the back four as Rafael, Vidic, Evans and Buttner.

I wouldn't risk Evans in there (or Rio), and neither Rafael for that matter. We don't need more defensive injuries.

Play some young lads - Veseli, Wootton, M. Keane or whoever. Plus Buttner at LB.

Now that Vidic is injured, wouldn't be surprised to see Carrick plays CB, partnering Wootton of Michael Keane.

De Gea
M. Keane---Wootton---Evans---Buttner
Nani---Fletcher---Cleverley---Brady
Powell
Henriquez

Bench: Johnstone, Vidic, Carrick, Anderson, Lingard, Welbeck, Petrucci

OK, revised line-up in light of the latest injury crisis:

De Gea
Valencia---Wootton---M. Keane---Buttner
Fletcher
Cleverley---Anderson
Nani---Welbeck---Brady

Wrap-up Rio, Evans, Rafael and Evra in cotton-wool. Don't even let them train. None of them on the bench. In fact none of them at Old Trafford at all. Keep them all safely at home on their sofas, with someone at Rio's to pass him the remote control when the need arises. FFS

Fletcher to protect the centre-backs, with Carrick on the bench when Fletcher needs subbing. Cleverley, Anderson and Welbeck to drop-back and help as the need arises. Valencia and Buttner to stay tight to help the defence also. Nani and Brady to carry the brunt of the attacking threat.

A real shame we've got such a tough draw (and that they'll be playing at least two of their best players in Coloccini and Tiote) and such an injury list again, as we have so many reserves players knocking on the door and in need of games in this competition, but Wootton and Keane should be told that they have a direct way into the first team in the next couple of months and should be given all the help we can give them to make the most of this. Given the fragile nature of Rio, Evans and Rafael they might soon be our centre-back pairing in the important games to come.

Is Tom Thorpe still at the club? If he is, he should start being a natural central defender, probably alongside Wotton. The last time i read, Thorpe was captain of the reserves. Couldn't be that bad a player if he captains the reserve side, no?

He is still at the club, but he's been playing more as a defensive midfielder because we have so many young defenders here.

I don't expect to see Ferdinand, Evra, Scholes, Giggs, Kagawa, or van Persie anywhere near this to be honest.

de Gea will start in goal, Evans might be the recognised defender, with Buttner, M.Keane, and Wootton likely to feature. Rafael could still play Right Back, though.

In midfield, I expect Fletcher if he isn't used at Right Back. Cleverley, Anderson, and Powell are all likely. I'm not sure if we might just play it narrow with Fletcher and Cleverley as the wider men, or just not start one of the four altogether. If only three of them start, I can see us utilising Welbeck, Macheda, or Bebe as the wide men in a front three.

Hernandez should start, possibly as the loan striker unless we play more of a diamond with Macheda up front too.

de Gea
M.Keane Evans Wootton Buttner
Fletcher Cleverley
Powell
Bebe Hernandez Macheda

Lindegaard; Rafael; Carrick, Lingard, Cole, Nani; Rooney

It's hard to judge how Newcastle will approach this, as their schedule will probably be as congested as ours. Pardew will probably expect to not finish as high in the league as they did last season, but still have enough strength in depth to prove their superiority over 60% of the teams involved (ie. Finish at least 8th even if they play strong sides in all three cup competitions). Is this their most realistic chance of silverwear? Probably. But I still think they'll rest a few, knowing we will too (players like Jonas, Cabaye, Tiote, Ba etc I would expect not to start, but they would probably start Cisse to try and get him scoring again).

I actually think we'll go out, but for once I'm not too bothered.

Newcastle is a dangerous side even if they play a mixed team.

I think we should have maximum 3 young players only (Johnstone, Keane, Lingard?) and the rest should be squad players (Buttner, Powell, Bebe, Henrique) and first timers (Rafael, Evans, Nani, Welbeck, Hernandez) .

...............Johnstone..................
Rafael....Keane....Evans.....Buttner
Bebe....Powell...Lingard..........Nani
.........Welbeck...Hernandez..........

Sub in: Henriquez

Let's not play Nani in this one, if he gets injured then our wing options will be Welbeck, Giggs and no more. We'd have to promote Brady or god forbid Bebe.

Nani is in a terrible run of form. I think he needs a very good game and start building some momentum from it. A fit but no-good Nani will not be our solution to the wing problem.

There is no way in h... we should play Evans or Ferdinand. The defence for me is Buttner, Wootton, M.Keane and Valencia!

am I the only one hoping to see both Powell and Petrucci try and play together? possibly infront of Fletcher and behind Henriquez?
I honestly don't expect us to win due to our squad being "weak" and the fact that they will most likely be using a strong one bar a few players, but there are just so many players I wanna see play.

Is there any point in playing Macheda? I mean really? We have seen what he can do, he his no better than a reserve team player (for us he could play in the championship maybe), he is not likely to improve or gain anything from playing tonight. Where as with Henriquez he is an unknown quantity and it gives the manager opportunity like with Macheda in the past, to see how he does against premiership standard opposition, so if we do have some bad luck up front with injuries he gets a slight knowledge of how he would fair at that level andwhether he could be brought in if there is an emergency?

not sure whether i want to see evans playing today, especially with vidic injured now. we need to wrap up rio and evans in cotton wools for the next few weeks.

I don't know if its wrong to say this but I care more about Evans and other first team defenders getting injured playing tonight than the bloody Capital One Cup itself. I wish Ferguson would just play academy players for defenders and not worry about getting beaten.

Well who ever is in defense, I feel for De Gea because he is going to be kept quite busy tonight and the press is going to be on his ass again tomorrow.

With the current strike force we have up front and the arrival of Henriquez, I don't see any good reason to play a guy who hasn't showed any signs of development the last four seasons. I guess this could be the absolute last chance for him to prove he has what it takes though, but it would surprise me.

It'll be interesting to see who will feature as CBs, hopefully Evans and Rio will be rested given the current situation, but that might prove risky if we want to move on to the next round.

I completely agree.

I wouldn't risk Rafael, Rio or Evans at all. I'd play reserve lads, and Buttner at LB.

--------------De Gea--------------

Fletcher---Carrick---Evans---Buttner

---------Cleverley---Anderson------

Welbeck--------Powell--------Brady

---------------Hernandez-----------

Should be good enough to get the job done. Carrick and Evans need gametime together incase Rio gets crocked and i don't think its too much of a risk playing them. Wouldn't trust the likes of Wootton and M Keane to start games against premiership opposition just yet.

With City out theres a decent chance of winnig this competition, so may aswell take it seriously.

What I expect:

--------------De Gea---------------
Rafael---Evans---Keane---Buttner
------Fletcher-----Cleverley-------
------------Anderson--------------
Lingard----Hernandez----Welbeck

What I hope:

-----------------De Gea---------------
Fletcher--Wootton---Keane---Buttner
Lingard---Petrucci---Powell--Welbeck
----------------Henriquez-------------
----------------Hernandez-------------

DDG

Veseli
M Keane
Wootton
Buttner

Fletcher
Powell
Anderson
Brady

Chicharito
Welbeck

Subs: Johnstone, Blackett, Petrucci, Tunnicliffe, Lingard, Bebe, Henriquez.

After the knocks and injuries we've picked up this week, I really don't want to risk anymore. Give the young lads a run out and see how they do against a very good PL side.

Carrick needs a rest today. He has played 3 games in 8 days and if he plays today then it will 5 games in 2 weeks because he will start against Tottenham at the weekend.

Yes please, with Wootton in for Carrick.

Also, any chance Henríquez could be involved?
