Shinji Kagawa

And in my opinion he hasn't done enough at United to be guaranteed a starting place and nor should it be considered madness to suggest otherwise.

I'll let that be your opinion then. In my opinion, he's far too good to be left out. I'm sure Fergie agrees with me, seeing how Kagawa almost always have been in the starting lineup when fit.

Berbatov outdid him in this department and he is playing for Fulham right now.

I disagree, but Kagawa is not really about the flashy moves either. That's just a bonus;)

To be fair, I don't think Fergie knows who are you to agree with you. :p

One thing about Fergie - there are only a few players any more that are sure starters in every game if they are fit. So I don't think we can take any vindication if/when we happen to say a certain player will start a certain game as saying Fergie agrees with one's opinions.

Right now Rooney, RVP, Carrick and Evra are the only sure starters.

Even DDG, Rafael are almost on the edge.

Everyone else - it just depends on the game / upcoming games.

Personally I think Rafael has more than cemented his position as our starting RB - well I have for a couple of seasons now but, I still feel as though Fergie will use Jones/Smalling in certain big games over him.

If being a good footballer only means a good touch and technique, you would be correct.

But to be a good footballer you need many other attributes too.

Welbeck and Hernandez will play for big clubs for the rest of their careers, Berbatov has only ever played with one big club and for much of his time was shown up to be not quite up to the task.

His mental strength, or rather lack of, is diabolical. He was never cutting it at a top club. Welbeck and Hernandez are players with an attitude that every manager will adore. They are tailor made for top football.

As far as those strictly footballing attributes go, he's only lacked pace and his finishing is no more than decent. What else does/did he lack? As far as I'm concerned he's got terrific first touch and control, is no slouch in the air and his passing/build-up play has always been marvelous. What else do you want from a top CF? Resilience, bit of pace and immaculate finishing - that's what he lacks, or has too little of, and that's why he won't make it at a top club.I like how you cunningly put all his advantages into 'technique' btw.

Don't want to make it into another Berba debate, that's why I stopped posting there, just couldn't resist when I saw your post:angel:

Kagawa is entirely different case, he's got everything to make it here. The Berba comparison was pointless considering that. I just don't like how we can't differentiate between skill, usefulness and other factors - thinking about the future. Hernandez and Welbeck are such good players already partially because Fergie went for all the marbles and put them in front of Berbatov.

Okay performance from him. Not done enough to be considered an outright starter as some seem to believe.

We preferred the ball in behind today as opposed to in to the forward feet; not a surprise he didn't do much in hindsight.

He has a serious need to improve his strength on the ball, he gets bullied off it way too easily. Not asking him to be like Wanyama or something but a bit like Iniesta (his idol), to be much harder to dispossess.

one of our few players that does not look technically inferior against that lot.

i'd start him again. yes he got caught out a few times but he also did not have 'deer in headlights' look when on the ball that some of our lot have when facing technically superior opposition.

I know he's a great player, not clicked fully just yet but worked hard tonight, looked dangerous running from midfield early on.

Dare I say it, needs to bulk up a bit, gets shrugged off the ball too easily at time.

Seriously what's the point in him? Shouldn't be anywhere near the starting XI

On the basis of what? He was the only attacking player hat provided nothing for us.

Lack of awareness nearly cost you once. Think this guy is still adapting to what's needed of him

Still think we aren't quite sure how to get him in positions where he can play those lovely through balls. But he has enough quality to make it here.

He's an excellent player who's very talented on the ball but I just get the feeling we don't know what to do with him at the moment or where to play him. Hopefully he'll find his right position and come good but he's an attacking midfielder who should play there but there seems to be no way to utilise him at the moment.

I like him, but I've felt for a while that I was more excited with the style of the player we signed than the actual player. This may be because I didn't see loads and loads of him at Dortmund, and I've seen little here to suggest he is as good as some of our fans say he is. I mean, he's clearly talented, but I haven't been able to assess just how talented yet.

I'd like to see a run of games from him because I'm not really sure exactly what sort of level he's at yet. I know his stats at Dortmund were impressive, but they don't always tell a full story.

His role is definitely undefined at the moment. He's sometimes wide, sometimes dropping very deep.

The problem is accommodating both Rooney and Kagawa it should be one or the other not both. When they both start neither get to play their best position, Kagawa goes left and Rooney goes right or drops deep into central midfield. There's only room for one 'number 10' while neither are great out wide it's a no win situation.

I would prefer to see Rooney playing his position in the next game with Cleverley dropping into midfield, we needed Clev's tempo in the first half. Kagawa is a gifted player but he is still searching for his best form in a United shirt.

I realised today that he's the same age as Cleverley. I mean, I always knew their ages, just always classed Kagawa as a more mature footballer. Obviously different players playing different games though, don't start a comparison.

He was good today, reliable.. Needed to challenge more.

Poor performance but he's barely played any games and to jump into a game of such physical intensity was always going to be difficult.

I thought he was ok???

Just looking at his game - he just plays a different style of football to the rest of our team IMO. Might see the best of him next season.

Still can't figure out why he played tonight....was utterly poor again!!

He'll take a while to get used to us and us to him. He's a class act, it's just that so far we haven't quite been able to get him going in the same way he did at Dortmund. That said, tonight he looked a bit lost. When he had the ball he was okay, when he didn't he seemed to struggle.

He obviously has a brilliant football brain but to be honest looked lightweight and at times off the pace this evening.

We certainly didn't miss him when he came off.

Thought he looked decent tbh. Even my Real supporting mate mentioned it. Don't know what's the issue.

He's been incredibly dissapointing so far.

I'm hoping he does a Ramires. He was also not that good for a while.
Couple of good passes from Kagawa, but overall very poor. This is unfortunate.

Love the lad and all, but I wouldnt have started him today. Would've preferred Cleverley in there. Did well enough, but went missing a wee bit at times. Will get better in time here though.
