The Nani situation is simply one to trust Fergie on.

If he's sold it'll be the right thing to do.

Hopefully, he carries on like versus Reading, knuckles down, and stays.

But we were after Hazard/Moura in the summer, so you suspect room would have had to have been made somewhere.

This is where I disagree. Fergie has admitted to getting plenty wrong in the past and I'm sure getting rid of Nani will be another. Unless of course he has the green light to go out and spend the required to get someone like Bale (£50m), but that seems a waste.

can't argue with that

you do question though who should be making room - should it be Nani?

Well no, cause he's our best winger.

It's like saying we should get rid of RvP if we wanted to make room for a new striker.

Not often though does he make mistakes which is why the most logical option is to trust him. There is clearly more to the matter than we actually have in hand.

It's possible to trust him in general but acknowledge that everything he does isn't right. So if he's sold it might well be the wrong thing to do.

@CStrattoYPSport: SAF: I would definitely prefer to keep Nani. He is one of best match winners in the game - and I am including the whole of Europe' #mufc

@CStrattoYPSport: SAF: We have been speaking to Nani's agent for quite a few weeks now but it is entirely up to the boy himself #mufc

@CStrattoYPSport: SAF: I would prefer to keep Nani until end of contract. He wants first-team football. Performances like the other night can guarantee that

Let's hope he gets the games now and we get his contract sorted. Id fear the worst if it gets to the summer and he's still not signed.

SAF on Nani: “We’re trying our best to resolve the new contract issue because he’s such a match-winning player.”

not a chance eddie woody or fergus would let nani walk on a free.

even if nani is playing like ronnie but refuses to sign, he'll be sold.

ideally we'd fine young for being crap and use that money towards sweetening nani's offer.

Tbf, he said similar things about Berbatov and Veron too. :p

Anyway, if he doesn't sign the contract he'll have to be off in the summer. Doubt we'll allow it to run out despite what SAF says.

This is still positive news. Now hopefully Fergie actually gives him the starts so he can prove he deserves a spot and sign that damn contract.

Sir Alex Ferguson has stated his desire to keep Nani at Manchester United and revealed talks are ongoing with the player’s agent.

The Portuguese international, whose contract expires at the end of next season, has been the subject of intense media speculation in recent months with many publications claiming the winger has fallen out of favour at Old Trafford, linking him with moves to various clubs in Europe.

However, when speaking during his weekly press conference at Carrington, the boss was quick to quash such rumours and claimed the 26-year-old is very much part of his plans for the future, whilst shining a light on contract negotiations that began earlier this year.

“We want to keep him, there's no doubt about that,” Sir Alex stated. “He's capable of scoring incredible goals. He's one of the best match-winners in the game, and I include the whole of Europe in that. He has an incredible talent for winning matches. I want to keep him.

“David Gill's been speaking to his agent for quite a few weeks. It's entirely up to the boy - he has a year and a half left. I think he wants guaranteed first-team football. We're trying our best to keep him because he's such a match-winner.”

Nani has missed much of this season as a result of a hamstring injury and has only just returned to full fitness, most recently coming off the bench during Monday’s 2-1 win over Reading to score once and set up Javier Hernandez, earning ManUtd.com’s Man of the Match award as a result.

Now in rude health, the Portuguese winger has added to Sir Alex's already pounding selection headache with crucial matches in the title race, FA Cup and UEFA Champions League approaching – but as the boss admits, it isn't a problem at this stage of the season.

“Nani was out with an injury for six weeks or more. We sent him back to Portugal for treatment and tried to get the injury to settle. He's never really had an injury. We know the talent he has. He's without doubt one of the best match-winners in the game,” Sir Alex explained.

“Now he's back fit, training well, he's a consideration. There's no doubt about that. He gives me a headache. We like to play Nani on the left sometimes, although he prefers playing on the right. But we also have Ashley Young. My options are fantastic. There's also Antonio Valencia and Ryan Giggs.”

There's no doubt SAF wants to keep him, the second he signs that contract he'll play more than Valencia. If we don't reach an agreement by the summer then he'll be off unfortunately, not a chance his contract will go to the last year. I just think SAF playing him instead of leaving him out might increase the chances of Nani signing, there'd be doubt in most players' minds whether to sign or not if they were left out while Valencia is in his current run of form.

"Up to the boy" sounds like the Pogba situation where Fergie realizes he won't sign a new contract.

Can't blame Nani - he'll be a certain starter and even a star almost wherever he goes as opposed to a second fiddle at United. And he'll get to play his favorite position regularly if he moves.
It's a no brainer for him to move really. There's nothing keeping him here when he's not considered a part of the best 11 in Fergie's eyes. Trophies don't count for anything if you don't feel a proper part of the success.

Really can't see him signing a new contract unless he starts in every important match from now and until the end of the season.

If he wants to leave, then so be it.

Anyway, he had a chance to move last summer but he asked for wages that even Oil Club Zenit refused.

Agent talking to Gill seems to sound he wanted some crazy wages.

Agreed. That he didn't start the CL final in 2011, despite a brilliant season, probably plays on his mind

Or maybe he asked for crazy wages because it was Zenit. It's the only reason to go there, so naturally it'd take something excessive for him to say yes.

Fergie says Nani wants a guarantee for playing time and he wants to play in his favorite position. All quite reasonable for a 26 year old footballer. Problem is we can't give him any of that. So naturally we'd have to sweeten the deal if we want him to stay regardless.

Why would he want to stay?

Listening to SAF there it sounds like money isn't an issue at all here. I understand him, easily one of best 11 players but it doesn't ever seem like SAF will fully trust him.

And fwiw to leave United for Zenit I'd want 250k /week minumum.

These are the full quotes, btw.

I have a strong feeling he will leave, I won't begrudge that decision however. He may not be consistent enough to be a starter, but given a sequence of consecutive appreances, I think he would.

Favourite position as in right wing, or am I missing something? With Valencia's form this season he should have confidence about playing his way into being first choice.

If he doesn't sign then he should be sold in the summer, would be a shame because he's always had the potential to be genuinely world class, but I don't see it as the disaster some of the Caf do. He's still frustrating at times and I never get the impression Ferguson really trusts him. Provided we get a good fee and he's replaced properly, not just with Zaha, then I wouldn't be too bothered personally.

Why would he want to stay?

He's been a starter when he's performed for us in the last 2 seasons. When his attitude wasn't right he was dropped.

“David Gill's been speaking to his agent for quite a few weeks. It's entirely up to the boy - he has a year and a half left. I think he wants guaranteed first-team football. He can guarantee himself that. Performances like the other night can guarantee that."

Also, why would David Gill speak with his agent about how much football he is or not getting "for weeks"? Think like with Pogba it will be a mixture of both factors.

Seems to me Sir Alex is trying to get him to up his game for the run in too.

That's a shame, but for the last couple of months of that season he wasn't in good form and wasn't a regular. You don't pick your team in May based on form in Ferbuary.

The thing is he probably wants regular first team football and also probably a regular first team salary alongside. For that he needs to consistently up his game and cut out the errors because only the top notch players get to be 100% constant in the team. Especially in terms of attackers.

While he doesn't he'll be in rotation with Valencia, Nani, Young and now Zaha. He was a regular starter when he was performing superbly in the 10/11 season till he tailed off towards the end.

You can bet your arse Rooney would've played in the same scenario.

And Nani was injured, rather than "not in good form". He's our best winger and should started that final for me.

"He wants a first team football", he talks about that like that's an issue, weird.

It's quite clever from SAF to push Nani on by saying "Performances like the other night can guarantee that."... thing is, Nani aint stupid and no doubt realises that the likes of Rooney and Valencia get much more leeway with their performance levels than Nani does.

In most other teams Nani would be a star man and a nailed on starter, just as Rooney is here.

Because they give solid workrate and commitment even when they are not performing.

And Valencia has been as great as Nani in terms of assists/Stats for us while Rooney is probably our best player alongside RVP and has proven it consistently over number of seasons.

You are making it sound as if they are some sort of very inferior players to Nani.

Park obviously.

Dunno about that, he was there to deal with Alves and Nani wouldn't have offered the same protection. It was Valencia and Park that surprised me, thought Nani could have had a real go at Abidal.

Park obviously.

Well, he was there to a defensive Job and press higher up the pitch and give protection to Evra against Alves. Nani in that role would have made very little sense.

Not too forget he was playing on the left too.
