Manchester United vs. Chelsea

any reaction yet? from fergie or other?

Fergie said we were tired and the emotions and intensity of Tuesday took it's toll. Also that Rafael and Evra are absolutely knackered. Nani injury is hamstring but nothing serious.

A shocking second half performance from the team allowed Chelsea to completely dominate proceedings. Benitez made acute substitutions which solidified their control over the match and enhanced their potency in attack. Perhaps we should also have made tactical adjustments before the game started to fully turn in their favor. Only De Gea’s vital interventions prevented us from losing the match and forced a replay. As it stands, I am not really optimistic about our chances at Stamford Bridge if the mentality of our players doesn’t improve significantly and if the effects of the Champions League exit are still lingering in the background.

Spot on, well said mate.

This United side has a bottling side to it, unfortunately. It's comfortably the best side in the league and thus will win it, but it was found out in the CL when they crumbled during the week and was very close to being found out today. That said, it's nothing Vidic and a proper CM wouldn't fix.

Such a disappointing game, I really thought we'd be up for it and 15 minutes in I thought we were, then Cech saves from Rooney to stop us going 3-0 up and we seemed to ease off.

Truth was Chelsea were back into the match before half time, then they were easily the better team in the second half and should have won it, our passing just eroded and we were bullied out of nearly every 50/50.

I thought Welbeck should have been on sooner and he did forge one opening for us, only RVP seemed to moving in slow motion.

Dreading the replay.

Actually that was a poor ball from Welbeck. If he'd have played it well, RVP would have been clear through.. He didn't lead him enough with it and that killed the opportunity.

For those who think it was a CL loss hang over, give your head a shake.
Not even getting ahead after 12 minutes cleared that up. ~heavy sarcasm~

I'm not opposed to bring in quality players, but why is it after loss or tie there's a cry to bring in more talent. United could play a team like Norwich away and lose and there's so much call for better players when United's top 20 players are all better quality players than a club like Norwich's.

Some days, you just don't have it. Most days, United has it. They're pretty consistently really good. It wouldn't be surprised to see them them beat Chelsea away.

I leave you guys with a 2-0 lead safely tucked away in the liquor cabinet and then I come to this! What the eff?

rafa's substitutions were perfect....ours were a bit late and too many players just looking clueless.

The fact we are still in it is excellent and I think we will turn them over. Just hope this 'form' does not creep into our league matches.

We need to beat Reading and then go into the international break atleast 12 ahead. I think we'll recover and be fine after that.

....I think we are all feeling a bit worried about that, even if people dont' admit it and are gung-ho

oO Not sure if serious or just your first season as a United fan?

Nah, I see they already explained to you that I'm not a United fan. I thought it was the same model we have here in Portugal for the cup, one-legged tie, if it's a draw it goes to extra-time and penalties. Could only watch the end of the game and was surprised to see everyone leaving, for a moment I thought Chelsea had won it on the basis of an away draw. Pundits then mentioned the replay and I forgot I had even made that post.

Is it just me or does anyone else have more faith with Rio on the ball than with Valencia at the moment? Mentally I feel he is lacking the confidence needed to slow play down mentally and make the right decisions on when/where/how to attack the opposition.

As a player it is hard to get through this mindset without playing through it but can we afford to wait for him to come around? Young at the moment isn't as dynamic but seems to be the safer option on possession.

You could see what was going to happen when we went 2-0 ahead, it was too casual and we almost paid for it towards the end. Big tie for us at Wembley, hopefully that will be some sort incentive for us when we go to the Bridge for the replay.

Disappointed in our second half performance , once again stepping off the gas and inviting pressure.

We didn't crumble. We had a player sent off unjustly against a very good team, they capitalised on that.

That's embarrassing. Chelsea are non-league pathetic.

As for the fella saying there was a gulf in class - if there was, it didn't look in your favour yesterday. United looked terrified in the second half and were right on the ropes until the last kick of the game. Couldn't string two passes together and tiredness can't be blamed as we've played 8 more games and had to travel back from Romania two days later than you who played at home twice.

With a good manager, some more Premiership experience under the belts of the younger players and a couple of shrewd signings that side will be a force to be reckoned with.

I wouldn't get carried away now. That is possibly the worst half of football I have seen United player at Old Trafford, certainly the worst this season.

You were fecking shite in the first half, couldn't string two passes together either. No doubt we were abysmal from 30 minutes onwards and deserved nothing really based on the second half, but it was an anomaly, can't remember the last time we were this bad. Our players kept passing to yours under no pressure, it was so bad I kept laughing instead of cursing after a while!
You will be better than this year next term, no one is doubting that. Getting carried away by yesterday's second half performance is a bit over the top though, considering how we failed to even do the basics correctly and on top of the that basically playing with 10 men (Valencia had an Obertan-like shocker).

It speaks volumes that nobody has created a MOTM thread for today's game yet!

I'd find it difficult to pick 3 names to be honest. De Gea (despite not having a good day regarding his kicking), Hernandez (just because he scored) and probably Ferdinand.

 at the Rising Sun comparing playing a little Romanian team to Real Madrid..

But you played on Tuesday at home and we played on Thursday, having to travel right across the continent in the process. We have also played 8 more games than you this season and the most of any club in Europe.

Ouch, with that, and having 10 managers per season, I feel sorry for you...

Do yourselves and City really expect any sympathy when you are the richest clubs in the world and have huge squads and unlimited vats of cash?

Give it a break FFS.

United have a much bigger squad than we do this season. Our squad is thin. Might be something to do with those 23 loanees..

Not asking for sympathy - just making the point that it is specious to cite tiredness.

Having 23 loanees is another example why it is difficult to have empathy for Chelsea. Why should you complain about your squad when you are literally (and not just the Jamie Redknapp variety) stockpiling on players.

So what point are you making?

We just played Real Madrid with 10 men and you played Steaua

I half believe that Fergie didn't really want to tear our team a new one based on yesterday's second half performance in the public, but decided to deal with it behind closed doors and let the public believe the players are tired. Seriously, Rafael was rested just a couple of weeks ago, Evra has been playing non-stop for years, Cleverley has been managed well and Carrick has been the same as Evra. If he truly believed that the players were (physically) tired he would have changed the approach IMO or let fresher players play the game. It was a really, really bad day in the office on our side, nobody could pass the ball around properly let alone beat a man, so luckily we are still in the tie.
The players may certainly be down psychologically after Tuesday, but it's still no excuse for fecking up big time after going 2-0 up so early. Shit happens, we move on, but you would be well advised not to read too much into that 45 minutes IMO.

I simply do not know what has happened to your winger Valencia. Last season I thought he would go on to become a top player, hell I rated him above Nani.

I have to agree now he seems lost. some shocking passes and crosses.

It's not even like he's been "found out" for being one-footed. He genuinely looks incapable at the moment. No one can put their finger on what it is which is the most annoying thing. This story about a back injury is interesting, but I won't believe it until there is something concrete to suggest it's affected him like injuries have with Torres or Ferdinand.

Great shame because as Rob says, looked like he'd go on to become a seriously insane player scaring the shit out of defenders.

This season the only notable thing I can remember of him is that ridiculous example of his pace at Anfield to win the pen.

Speaking to some Chelsea fans I know and a few I've seen on the internet, some of them think that they're the bees knees now and that we're nothing but an average team that flucked our way to being 12 points clear. I hope that we show them up for real at Stamford Bridge now and prove that they're little 'domination' in the 2nd half was nothing but a blip on our part. What's with them and the FA cup anyway? cnuts.

Whats a Fluck? Is it a lucky shag?

Its probably retaliation for the sort of comments United fans were making before the game and at 2-0! Taking us far too lightly because of our terrible performance at City.

I heard more Chelsea fans saying they were going to be thrashed before the game, than United fans. You have been terrible pretty much all season, not just away to City. By you're 2003 onwards standards anyway.

True, I was one of them. The performances in recent ways have inspired nothing but despondency in the fans - it was great to see some fight from the team again.

Incidentally, we have often given you trouble at Old Trafford going back far beyond 2003. Probably the closest you have to a bogey side in the Premier League era.

Yeah its one thing to say that, but its another thing to say ' Chelsea are going to get embarrassed' and 'this side won the champions league' I nearly actually quoted that when it went to 2-2, and wrote 'this side is 12 points clear in the league' but didn't because I am aware that a one off game doesn't not dictate how good a team are!
