Swansea City vs. Manchester United

Nice. Cheers.

Understandably cautious predictions here but I think we'll see a different United here. In all previous games we seemed to lack a competitive edge, even in the Community Shield which doesn't have the same intensity as a league game. I fancy us to win.

De Gea

Fabio Ferdinand Evans Evra

Carrick Anderson

Nani Kagawa Welbeck

Van Persie

Swansea are a good team and they will give us a match. Anyway I think that we'll manage to win. Robin to score the only goal in the game.

Very little has inspired me with the confidence to think we can win away here this pre-season, however, it can't be ruled out that we turn up this weekend.

I'd agree with those saying a draw is most likely.

David
Jones------Rio-----Nemanja-----Patrice
Michael------Anderson
Antonio-----Shinji------Luis
Robin

Has Kagawa ever started a match for us immediately after travelling to, playing for, and returning from, Japan ? He might make the bench but I seriously doubt he'll start. If Valencia is playing for Ecuador then he'll also be doing a huge amount of travelling during the week.

That's all true and some good points, but we also have Nani, Zaha, and Young all at least carrying a knock of sorts and as of right now are at least a slight doubt to start. If by some chance all three didn't make it, and Kagawa / Valencia couldn't start, things wouldn't look as nice for the starting line-up, we'd probably end up playing something like this:

de Gea
Fabio Ferdinand Evans Evra
Cleverley Carrick
Welbeck Anderson Giggs
van Persie

Either way, I fancy us to nick this 0-1 in a pretty close game. RvP with it.

Apart from Fabio for Rafael and Rio for Jones, I wouldn't change it.

De Gea

Fabio
Ferdinand
Vidic
Evra

Cleverley
Carrick
Giggs

Zaha
Van Persie
Welbeck

We need to come out flying this season. Moyes could be dead and burried after 5 games this season at least by the press!

De Gea

Fabio
No 5
Vida
Evra

Carrick
Clev
Kagawa

Zaha
RVP
Welbeck

Little off topic, but could the introduction of BT Sport actually mean some positive competition will trickle down and benefit the consumer in the next few years?

For the first time we've really seen two big companies having to compete with each other in order to try and claim their share of the market - it can only be a matter of time before prices start to become more competitive too, and there should then be an opportunity for a potential third provider to enter the market.

At the moment, signing up to both Sky and BT is going to be very expensive for people, and it surely won't last. People just don't have that kind of disposable income each month to be paying for another range of sport channels.

We got a 30% rise in prices here in Iceland.. They have gotten out of hands, something like 500quid p/year only for the PL! CL and Cups are an extra 200!

It's nothing new though, is it? We've already paid monthly subscriptions to Setanta and then ESPN.

10$ a year on basic cable.:D

We'll win this, tight 1-0.

Swansea beat Malmo 4-0 who I assume are about the same level as AIK. Going with a 2-2 draw for this

Swansea beat Malmo at home, we drew away.

Swansea beat them in the Europa League, we had the draw with AIK in pre season, the scorelines in those games don't mean anything for me bud.

Yeah I would say us drawing with AIK doesn't tell much but Swansea beating Malmo so convincingly was bit of a surprise considering it was their first game of the season.

Neither of those companies managed to secure just so many matches though, and furthermore, neither forced Sky into giving away free football on the first day of the season.

The free football for broadband users is the big difference for BT.

Fabio is much better offensively and better at passing under pressure. A better RB than Jones IMO.

Aye. Also, I think using Jones on the right is a waste of fantastic CB. Although it's good experience for the lad, I'd rather we let him focus and develop his game in the centre.

Yep, but I think that again he'll have a difficult time getting time there. Rio, Vidic and Evans are better than him. Smalling is probably better than him too, certainly I haven't ever seen Jones playing as good for a big period of time than Smalling in his debut season for us. Again it will be a season when he'll play in many positions, but the same can be said for Fabio too. And depending on tactics I can see them getting rotated for the RB position, until Rafael becomes available.

An interesting perspective, I always figured Jones has the potential to be better than all of them -- with time. If he can stay in the squad for 2-3 years, Ferdinand will looking at retirement and Vidic will be playing less. I'd say the future of United's central defence is already at the club; it's just a matter of deciding which combination of Evans/Jones/Smalling are the most effective.

I'm a bit of a Jones fanboy, so naturally I've included him in our starting 11 for Saturday. Good chance we'll see one of the others instead though. I'd also really like it if Nick Powell is somewhere on the teamsheet, I want him to get plenty of playing time this year.

Definitely, he has the tools to become a top CB, probably as good as Rio and Vidic. I just think that at the moment he isn't as good as our other CB, but he's the youngest of them. With time, he'll become a great defender. I think that Rio will play less than in last year, so likely Jones will see more time as a CB.

Sitting at work, staring blankly at RedCafe, and then it hits me...

UNITED ARE BACK UNITED ARE BACK WEEEEEEEEEE YAAAAAAAY UNITED ARE PLAYING ON SATURDAY

Is genuinely how I feel about this match

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...season-as-battle-with-BT-Sport-escalates.html

With BT Sport offering three sports channels from next season as part of their broadband package, Sky Sports has unveiled revamped plans for a season that will include a record 116 live fixtures.
On Saturday Aug 17, programmes from Sky Sports 1 will replace the regular programming on Sky 2 and Pick TV. This will include a free-to-air Premier League match at 5.30pm as well as a Football League match live at lunchtime as part of a new show called FL72.
BT Sport responded by describing Sky's day of free action as a "stunt" and pointed out that their sports coverage is free throughout the season to broadband subscribers.
Among the most attractive matches on the first weekend will be David Moyes' debut as Manchester United manager against Swansea, José Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge against Hull City and Manuel Pellegrini's first match as Manchester City boss at home to Newcastle United.
Sky Sports' free day will also include the brand new show, Saturday Night Football - fronted by Jamie Redknapp and Dave Jones. The show is part of a new schedule of programmes which includes the pairing of Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville for Monday Night Football and a new Saturday schedule running from Soccer AM all the way through to extended evening highlights of all 3pm matches.

So will this be only in Englaterre or will us poor downtrodden paddies avail of a day's free sky?

I'm getting quite excited now. First game of the season is always special for me. :)

It sounds obvious, but we really can't afford to show them much of the ball. Swansea look pretty good shape fitness wise and are no pushovers on the ball. Tough game, but I think we'll edge it by a goal or two.

Can't believe the season is nearly upon us again. It went really slow at the start of the summer, but it really has picked up the pace now.

De Gea, Vidic, Evra, Van Persie are the only nailed on starters for me. Carrick would be as well as long as this eye-infection improves.

How did Zaha fare in his cameo yesterday in England-Scotland match?

Just get your milk from Lidl then. :)

Not well. Had a bit of a stinker.

Nothing to worry about, though. All young wingers do, and to be honest ten minutes against a packed Scotland box with absolutely no space to run into was hardly a great opportunity to shine.

Cleverley and Welbeck performed well for England, so I think they're very likely to be in. I fancy Zaha to start as well, but that might depend more on whether Nani is fit. I did fancy Evans to start, but he took ill so that might mean Ferdinand plays. Fabio and Jones is a toss-up at right back and it's probably going to be Giggs getting the nod over Anderson, unless Carrick isn't fit then we'll probably see them both!

de Gea
Fábio Ferdinand Vidic Evra
Carrick Cleverley
Giggs
Zaha van Persie Welbeck

That's the team for me, though possibly Anderson for Carrick, Jones for Fábio, and Nani for Zaha. All are changes that arguably don't weaken the team (bar us maybe missing Carrick).
