Lee Cattermole can do what he did tonight. Won the ball a few times, got about the pitch, average passing then ended up getting himself sent off for persistent fouling. He'd have been about £2m to buy probably.

It was his best match by far in a united shirt and he still offered very little of substance. He is well out of his depth. Now that could change of course but at the moment he just looks like a weak option in the centre of midfield.

He played well but was brainless to keep going in for challenges he couldn't win when on a yellow. Was bound to be sent off sooner or later.

Didn't look like he even touched the bloke for the second yellow.

Then again I was watching on what was basically a syringe full of bacterial infections being pumped into my blood stream.

Some very differing views on his performance in here. I only saw the last 20 minutes and from reading the last two pages of this thread I still haven't a clue how he did. It ranges from worst player ever to good.

It depends who you read. If you read the post history of those saying he was shit tonight then you'll know you're not dealing with someone who is 'objective'.

I saw the entire game and thought he was generally very ineffective. This is not an overreaction because of the red card, this is just my observation from todays match.
He never passes the ball more then 10 yards, doesn't drive forward, is always laying the ball either sidways or backwards. Now, some will say that that's not his role, he's there to sweep up etc. But, even defensively he's lacking, opposition players just breeze past him, he's not very good at winning the ball back and I don't think i've seen him tackle yet, never mind WINNING a tackle!

We desperately need a midfielder who can win the ball and DRIVE us forward....as it stands, Fellaini just ain't right for us.

He did very well, as for the red card the first yellow was harsh and the second was a needless tackle but shit happens.

He played better tonight, but then did something stupid. I said it earlier, fouling machine. If the ref was "totting up" he could've been sent off half a dozen times.

Really expected more from him, then again i expected him to be our YaYa.

Let's not make more of the red than what it was. Yes we could all see it might have happened, but the 1st yellow was harsh, the 2nd was clumsy. Shouldn't have done it, but he won't be the last player to pick up 2 yellows like that. I don't think it would have been 2 bookings in the PL.

Overall he did pretty well tonight and improved from his previous 3 games.

He did pretty well compared to what he's done so far.

Still offers astonishingly little on the ball that say Phil Jones couldn't offer.

And still managed to get himself unnecessarily sent off due to not being fast enough/having enough control over his limbs.

He's clumsy and asked for the red card by getting involved repeatedly with those niggling fouls.

The first was for the combination of about 4 fouls, and also came after we'd made about 2 or 3 fouls as a team for which Fellaini got punished.

I thought he played decently today. I still think we look a more solid side with him in the team and I think he's still got a lot more to show. Red card aside its baby steps for him as he grows into being a United player.

The answer lies in the middle - he was average, constant fouling and let his man run off him a lot. Wasn't as bad on the ball as in previous games though.

I hate Young too much right now to bother with Fellaini. In actual fact he played ok, but the fouls were often unnecessary.Overall he adds very little to the attack and bundling players over and commiting fouls will not help the team as a whole.Right now i am still in the Fellaini camp but only just....

Yeah I'll go with the 'played well' one.

I'm too busy hating Young for this anyway.

I still think he needs to be either played as he played for Everton last season (which I don't want to see, for the record, unless as a last resort) or as a deeper midfielder to be in his comfort zone. His mobility really lets him down when he's asked to contribute offensively and defensively and he ends up chasing players and giving away soft fouls. He's not the Fletcher-esque ball winner that for some reason people expected him to be.

On the plus side I thought his forward passing was strong tonight, found some nice little balls through to players in between the lines and was sensible at the back. Still think he needs to show for the ball more though.

Average performance which is an improvement. Still don't know what he's actually offering though apart from height.

He was very average tonight. He didn't really offer much when he got on the ball. It wasn't a terrible performance but it wasn't all that good either.

I thought he did fine but some people are idiots who can't get past what we paid for him. I think the ref was a bit quick in getting out the second yellow personally. The game wasn't particularly dirty but once he whipped it out, he didn't have much choice.

I see him nominated by a lot of people in the MOTM thread, sarcasm ? I thought he was (again) average and the red card not taken into account.

And I think that alongside Evra and Vidić or Kagawa, he was the best player on the pitch.

Quite simply, he's been doing his job very well.

If he plays on Sunday we will get bum raped. £30m my hole.

It was his best overall match for us so far. Looked comfortable enough in his midfield role and made his presence known. He generally kept things moving with his passing and got involved in some decent build up play. It was an encouraging display for him. But then he had to go and ruin it with his persistent fouling. He's gonna collect bookings with that style of his.. all elbows and gangly legs everywhere.

I saw a place for him in our squad tonight but just how much more scope he has to become a greater player is in serious doubt.

Clumsy useless fecking oaf of a player. I was pro signing him but expected much more. I thought he would give us much more steel in the middle but I reckon Bruce Forsyth would breeze past him in his slippers. Doesn't even seem to be able to win headers.

Thought he was crap in the first half and couldn't believe the praise he was getting in here. Interestingly enough I thought his performance was great from about the sixtieth minute when Kagawa went centrally and was always an option. Then the donkey got himself sent off. He's not a Manchester United player.

I thought he showed a bit of promise when he moved up a further forward and chested down a few long balls. Apart from that he was distinctly average and played it very safe, which was probably the role he was given to be fair.

These fouls and cards are going to be a big liability in Europe though. He needs to learn to cut it out when he's on a yellow.

About right. Could easily have been sent off 20 mins earlier for a challenge near the touchline that was worthy of a yellow card. Fellaini's general play was quite good with a few awful passes but he wasn't the only one giving the ball away cheaply from time to time.

His passing was alot better tonight. Looked to be able to pick his pass before he received the ball, rather than slowing the play down with his usual 3 or 4 touches. But he didn't know how to handle those nippy Spaniards, and just kept barging them over. He could have been sent off earlier for that body check on the sideline. Should have come off sooner, but other than the fouls, I thought he looked better than previous games. Looks a bit fitter and more mobile.

I can't beleive people actually think he was good tonight? He's too slow, way too slow. He seems to be always just getting to his man to challenge as the pass is being played. Just not cut out for it, looks way out of his depth.

Sociedad were making the most of every bit of contact and pressuring the ref all game (especially the CB).

I thought he picked up in the second half with some decent interceptions, but in a game like that with so much space he should be doing more with the ball, and he's clumsy as feck, the constant fouling deserved the red as he just kept pushing his luck after more than one warning while on a yellow.

You mean this seriously ?

Absolutely. He's our defensive midfielder and he's been shielding the back four very well, a lot of tackles put in, a lot of running and aerial duels won. That red card was absolute bullshit and his stupidity combined, I agree, but it still does not cloud his good performance.

one of the best players on the pitch?

whoaaaaaa

Yea wait, I can do it better.

fecking Moyes why he didn't play Nani or Januzaj today ffs, why so negative, omg it's sociedad, 27.5 mln pounds lol, Rooney is our best player, Robin and Chicharito had no service.

Better?
