La Liga 2013-2014

Harsh penalty called on Dani Alves, consolation goal for Betis... unfortunate for an excellent Valdés.

1-1! Alderweireld should've cleared the ball, but let his man get past him to put in a cross for Uche to tap in. The momentum has been with Villarreal for the entire 2nd half... Atléti will need one hell of a response now.

edit: it's another og., Juanfran bundling it in apparently

Diego Costa coming off with around 10 minutes to go, Adrián López coming on.

Alderweireld played in Atletico's only other league game they failed to win this season (Espanyol) and was partly at fault for the only goal of the game. Poor guy, 2 games, 2 errors and no wins.

So international breaks always have the potential for trouble for the big boys and both Barcelona and Real Madrid have injuries to contend with.

Barcelona will play Granada without Mess and Valdes (both out until the new year). Xavi, Alves, Alba are all out as well. Home advantage should carry them through, but Granada's away form is decent so maybe they can make a game of it.

Incidentally, the Barca press have run a lot of negative stories about Messi recently: over his injury, his family, his pay demands, his (lack of) friends at the club etc. So much so that the inevitable rumour is now out - Messi's dad is supposed to be "talking to" another club. Contracts negotiations eh.

Real Madrid have lost Khedira (more or less to the end of the season), Coentrao, Marcelo, Varane and Di Maria. Almeria are seldom lucky and I don't expect them to be lucky this weekend, but stranger things have happened.

Meanwhile a different kind of story from Real Madrid.

They're practically qualified in the CL and next week they play Galatasaray, not the most attractive opposition. With tickets in hand, Real Madrid gave 2000 of them to their charity. They came up with this idea. Bring in 5kg of food (unopened, usable, in date) and they'll give you a match ticket. The food is for distribution via food banks.

So, a positive boost for Madrid charities, but also a great chance for Madrid families who can't afford match tickets normally to take the kids there in the run up to Christmas. In fact, buying something like bags of flour to donate - mum, dad and three kids could go there for about 10 Euros. Of course, most people will give more and the idea is as much to raise awareness of the food drive as to get actual supplies. But still, for some of their poorer fans this will be a great idea in more than one way.

They rapidly distributed the tickets today, and are still collecting the food. It's depressing that it's needed in Spain, but it is, and I guess something about this just struck a chord with me today.

It's a good idea.

Depressing how many people needs food banks around here. Sometime ago they were there for some indigents, or people in temporary bad situations and whom Social Security wasn't reaching properly. Nowadays it's that and a lot more, namely the long-term unemployed for whom the dole has expired. The director of a local food bank from Azores was saying the other day that something like 20 to 30 percent of former regular contributors to the bank were now users instead. So they have less to distribute to more.

Anything that raises awareness on this is important. Some people are starving. I'm seeing things I didn't used to see 5 years ago. Until now every Economic "crisis" looked somewhat abstract. It's not the same any more. And you can't know who it will hit next. My father is a long-term unemployed (who fortunately banked a good chunk during his working years and is doing ok) and my mother has seen her median wage cut down to two thirds in three years alone. Very few can take thir jobs for granted, people over 40 have no perspective of improvement. Chaos seems just around the corner even for many who can consider themselves fortunate for the time being.

Weird talking about this on the football forum, good on Real Madrid.

Crisis with Leo?....You channeling your inner Punta Pelota, jojojo?...Is Gallardo a relative?

There's been a lot of negative press in Barcelona - typical whisper campaign stuff. Completely out of character for how the catalan based media normally treat Messi. So I do think it's contract negotiating season.

It was just a matter of time before someone came up with the "he's already talking to another club" story. Hilarious that it's Gallardo, now if ever a football "agent" needed a clown hat to convince you of his status in the game, it's him.

Barcelona today:Pinto; Montoya, Pique, Bartra, Adriano; Busquets, Iniesta, Cesc; Pedro, Neymar y Alexis

15 minutes in and 0-0

I'm not sure Pinto's touched the ball yet, a goalkick maybe.

Fabregas scored Barca's 3rd Liga penalty of the season, after a foul on Iniesta. Alexis and Pedro got the other two in a 4-0 win.

Celta are currently beating Real Sociedad 2-3 in what sounds like a good game, unfortunately I was watching Dortmund Bayern - ah well.

Next up, Madrid with Diego López; Carvajal, Pepe, Ramos, Arbeloa; Xabi, Illarra, Isco; Ronaldo, Bale y Benzema.

Almería: Esteban; Nelson, Torsiglieri, Pellerano, Trujillo, Dubarbier; Verza, Azeez, Aleix, Barbosa y Rodri
Rodri is Barcelona Rodri. Liverpool Suso is on the bench.

If Madrid had a world class striker like Aguero or Suarez they'd be almost unstoppable. Sadly they are stuck with Benzema for now.

Yep, sell Benzema and you have Cristiano Ronaldo, Bale and Luiz Suarez. Now that would be formidable, and I think Ronaldo and Suarez would work well together.

I think Suarez would score 40-50 goals a season in La Liga playing in that team. Surely they will go for him, so long as they aren't worried about his reputation for controversy.

4-0 Isco. Copycats.

Meanwhile one website has just reported Ronaldo's injury as:
Bocadillo en la parte posterior del muslo izquierdo.
I'm assuming it's some weird automatic spelling correction - otherwise maybe Vato can explain how a sandwich got in Ronaldo's thigh :nervous:
