I'm not talking a load of shit at all, this is the Fellaini thread, the point at hand is the form of Marouane Fellaini, i've offered up a perfectly legitimate reason as the why he has looked poor for us thus far. We're a much better team when Rooney drops deep and makes a three (and by better think from mid table to title challenging) like he's been doing for the last two seasons when Carrick has been brilliant. Presumably in order to get Wayne on board Moyes played Rooney higher up earlier in the season, and our midfield was atrocious, no matter what combination we put out (with the exception of Giggs a few times, due to his ability to carry the ball and bypass the need for a link man). It is completely unfair to discuss the merits of Fellaini on these terms, nobody would have done well in that midfield, nobody did.
Since you've mentioned the rest of our team, I might as well address it, it's raining and I'm bored. What do tactics have to do with the form of the rest of our team? Quite a bit actually. Rooney playing deeper means we have options on the ball, Cleverly has someone to play off, Evans and Smalling don't have to hoof the ball any more (have you noticed how we've not been as direct these past few games? It wasn't all Rio's fault) because Rooney is coming deep to get the ball, or creating space for Jones/Cleverley to carry the ball, this means we can build play up resulting in space for our wingers which means we can get our fullbacks overlapping, it means we transition from defence to attack much quicker, all this has happened since we've started playing Rooney where we used to play him, it's not a coincidence we've suddenly started playing well. How many times has Valencia got into a position where he's one on one with the fullback in recent weeks? Probably more than the other 15 games combined. It's because we're playing at a much quicker tempo, due to options. There is a reason why the vast majority of top sides play a three and NOBODY plays a two the way we played it earlier in the season.
I have no idea what your argument is, everyone plays better in a three? And? Who gives a shit. Iniesta wouldn't be as good in a 4-4-2, does that make him useless? No. He's one of the best players on the planet, and Fellaini not playing well in our archaic 4-4-2 after just joining the club doesn't make him useless either, especially when it seems we're going to be playing a three (well, the Rooney version of a three anyway) from now on. Keane wasn't as good in a three by the way, to answer your irrelevant question.
