Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

End Of Watch - LA police drama shot mostly in handheld 'blair witch style'. It was for the most part very tense and exciting and the chemistry between Gyllenhaal and Pena was great. Only gripe I had with it was the friendship between the guys was a bit over the top, there's only so many times you need to tell your work partner you love him!

Yip. Some fine totty in that too iirc.

Enjoyable movie.

Yeah it took me a while to recognise the Mexican cop's wife in it. She's your one from that piece of shit show 'Under the Dome'. She was far sexier in the film.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Quite enjoyed it. I was worried after the first 15 minutes that it'd just be an hour and a half of his fantasies but there's a decent story there and a lovely message. It also wasn't overly saccharine as these Hollywood fantasies tend to be. Good date movie.

I could certainly imagine that, yeah, you're right!

Her - Loved this film, right down to the last straw of Joaquin Phoenix's moustache. A touching, poignant and quite plausible potrayal of intimate relationships in a not-so-distant-future. Phoenix was fantastic and who wouldn't fall in love with Scarlett Johansson's voice? Alan Watts of all people popping up in a cameo was quite suprising and nice too. Possibly my favourite film of 2013.

Spike Jonze is underrated because he comes across as a bit of a rich kid bellend. All his films have been great. Looking forward to Her.

TCM seem to be on a roll with the great films these days, The Thin Red Line is on tonight.

The Wolf of Wall Street. 8/10
Didn't realise just how funny this film would be. Scorcese's best film in years. The chase/fight on Lemon 714's is one of my favourite scenes this year.

How's Leo? I'm intrigued to see that because I feel like I've been fighting against the tide on Di Caprio for years. He was brilliant when he broke through (Gilbert Grape, Romeo, Basketball Diaries) but since he's got mainstream serious cred with all the Scorsese films everyone else seems to love, I've really disliked him. He's been playing the same Inception-esque stressed out brow furrowing angry tense guy for years. People seem to love that for "acting" chops (see also, Bale) but I've always wanted to see him let loose a bit. Charmingly comic is the one thing I really want to see him do. The best thing I think he's done performance wise for a decade is Django where he seemed to be having loads of fun..

This looks like the one. Is it?

Catch Me If You Can is one of his best I think.

I like Di Caprio and I think Django is maybe his best so far, I also enjoyed Catch Me If You Can.

Fantastic film, one of my all time favourites.

That's the example I was going to cite!

Are you sure you're not being contrarian for the sake of it Mockney? I never quite get that criticism about actors doing the same thing over and over, some of those considered 'greats' have had careers that consisted of fairly similar parts, with a couple of more original ones. Entire careers. Over the last decade, I feel DiCaprio has shown great range, and I feel the 'furrowing angry tense guy' definition is fairly reductive (can you say this in English?). I've never thought I was seeing him play the same part from Aviator to The Departed (please don't go on your yearly rant about it!), or from Shutter Island to the Departed. Sure, you can find similarities in the parts, as you could probably take the filmography of any actor and pick holes in it by coming to the same conclusion. It's also due to the characters in most of the films being interesting for him, I guess, whereas the lighter roles that actually present an interest, either because of their incredible stories, either because of there being something more to them, don't come around often. His roles in Catch me, in Django or in Wolf of Wall Street all have a certain depth to them on top of the more amusing aspect.

I think he's shown great range in his acting for a while now, carrying off almost every single part he's portrayed (Gangs of NY was a huge flop though), and choosing his films carefully.

I definitely don't agree Django was his best performance in a decade anyway, even though I thought he was excellent in it, and I really enjoyed him in it. Shutter Island is my favourite from him, incredible portrayal.

You should definitely check out Wolf of Wall Street in any case, if what you'd like to see from him is DiCaprio letting loose, you definitely won't be disappointed!

I think I'm the only person in the world who really likes Di Caprio in Blood Diamond...

That and Shutter Island are my two favourite films of his.

Nah I like him in most of his films to be honest, I just cited a few but I had a check at his filmography over the past 10 years, it's impressive. He was indeed great in Blood Diamond which itself was a very good film.

I just saw the Wolf of Wall Street as well. I'd give it 7.5/10. Enjoyable and funny movie with a very good performance from Leo. It's a bit too long though, for me. It felt more like the old Scorsese in style, which I liked.

It's my favourite film of his since Casino pretty much, I thought the Departed was good but a tad overrated, Gangs and Aviator were average and Shutter Island was shit.

The Hunt
Brilliant film and am ashamed it took me this long to see it. A bit farfetched at the beginning but once you get over that, it really becomes brilliant. Great performances from all the cast and led brilliabtly by Mads Mikkelsen. The cinematography was also amazing and needs a mention. The film was gripping throughout and never once did I get bored at all 9/10

Ninja 2
Surprisingly I enjoyed the first one a while back and this, although not as good as the first was still enjoyable. There were LOTS of fight scenes and the choreography was top notch. Scott Adkins really is an underrated martial arts actor 6.5/10

Dallas Buyers Clubs

Decent Oscar bait. Can't believe Matthew McConaghy actually contracted AIDS in preperation for the role. That's dedication to your craft.

Untouchable/The Intouchables:

Watched this last night and found it very enjoyable. Given the subject matter, I thought it might be a bit too sentimental but I found it to be charming and amusing in parts.

Her - or how HAL got his groove back - Absolutely beautiful film, Joaquin Phoenix tackles the role very well and Scarlett Johansson makes it entirely plausible that you could fall in love with your OS. Tackles love, relationships and society in a quirky way but manages to portray it in a more adult and intelligent way than the majority of films out there. Probably my film of last year.

Nice soundtrack too.

12 Years a Slave was a massive movie, I thought. Kind of like Schindler's List when you take it in as a whole.

Nice soundtrack too.

Yeah the music is great in it, that song has James Murphy's fingerprints all over it. The song they use as a surrogate for a photo is lovely too and a really creative idea. In fact I think I loved pretty much everything about it, even down to the trousers we will be wearing in the future.

I didn't realise Scarlett Johansson had such a nice singing voice either, may have to download her album.

The Wolf of Wall Street

Funniest film I've seen in a long time. 3 hours of non-stop debauchery, profanity and monstrous excess. The 'lemon' scene had me in absolute stitches. This is a depiction of Capitalism at it's most fecked up hedonistic worst and if it wasn't so damn funny I think there might be more of a backlash against how much it glamorises that lifestyle.

edit: Having a read around it seems there actually is a bit of a backlash on that very subject. Surely better to show it as it is and effectively hold a mirror up to the audience. Are you angry that people get away with this every day or are you angry it isn't you?

Frozen- 9.5/10

Fantastic songs, the usual excellent Disney animations and a decent enough plot. Mostly the songs though. But the awkward moment when you and your friends are the only adults in a sea of children waiting outside the cinema.

The Life of Pi

A brilliant movie by Ang Lee. Very moving film with Pi's relationship to the Bengal tiger being central to the film. Very sad in parts, but a great experience and I was so happy to finally watch a film that has got a decent storyline and from unknown actors. I was so happy that Ang Lee fired Tobey McGuire from the film, I mean, what would he have offered that the others haven't already?

All in all, a must watch...9.75/10

You watched it on Canal+ didn't you? :D

Watched 12 Years A Slave at the Cornerhouse. Brilliant film, perfectly cast and beautifully shot. Some immense performances and scenes that were extremely difficult to watch. I'd be surprised if I see a better film this year.

So true Cass.

Carriers (2009) - Had a sci-fi itch and stumbled onto this piece of crap. It's an utterly pathetic diseasy apocalypse affair. I switched it off mid-way through but was half tempted to continue just to see what new realms of wankiness the movie could go to. 1/10.
