TCM seem to be on a roll with the great films these days, The Thin Red Line is on tonight.
Fantastic film, one of my all time favourites.
How's Leo? I'm intrigued to see that because I feel like I've been fighting against the tide on Di Caprio for years. He was brilliant when he broke through (Gilbert Grape, Romeo, Basketball Diaries) but since he's got mainstream serious cred with all the Scorsese films everyone else seems to love, I've really disliked him. He's been playing the same Inception-esque stressed out brow furrowing angry tense guy for years. People seem to love that for "acting" chops (see also, Bale) but I've always wanted to see him let loose a bit. Charmingly comic is the one thing I really want to see him do. The best thing I think he's done performance wise for a decade is Django where he seemed to be having loads of fun..
This looks like the one. Is it?
Catch Me If You Can is one of his best I think.
That's the example I was going to cite!
Are you sure you're not being contrarian for the sake of it Mockney? I never quite get that criticism about actors doing the same thing over and over, some of those considered 'greats' have had careers that consisted of fairly similar parts, with a couple of more original ones. Entire careers. Over the last decade, I feel DiCaprio has shown great range, and I feel the 'furrowing angry tense guy' definition is fairly reductive (can you say this in English?). I've never thought I was seeing him play the same part from Aviator to The Departed (please don't go on your yearly rant about it!

), or from Shutter Island to the Departed. Sure, you can find similarities in the parts, as you could probably take the filmography of any actor and pick holes in it by coming to the same conclusion. It's also due to the characters in most of the films being interesting for him, I guess, whereas the lighter roles that actually present an interest, either because of their incredible stories, either because of there being something more to them, don't come around often. His roles in Catch me, in Django or in Wolf of Wall Street all have a certain depth to them on top of the more amusing aspect.
I think he's shown great range in his acting for a while now, carrying off almost every single part he's portrayed (Gangs of NY was a huge flop though), and choosing his films carefully.
I definitely don't agree Django was his best performance in a decade anyway, even though I thought he was excellent in it, and I really enjoyed him in it. Shutter Island is my favourite from him, incredible portrayal.
You should definitely check out Wolf of Wall Street in any case, if what you'd like to see from him is DiCaprio letting loose, you definitely won't be disappointed!
