Mesut Özil

I don't think there's any subject I get more angry about when I have to listen to the stream of complete ignorance that is spouted about him. Forgive me a rant.

Mesut Ozil was not signed to be a goal-scorer. He was signed to be a major factor in the creation of goals. I know this is obvious but it seems to need saying.

What he has done this season has really been immensely positive. We finished fourth last year by the skin of our teeth, and even allowing for internal improvement, it's not a coincidence that we've raised our level a lot this year with him in the side. Some people act as if this revolution has nothing to do with him when, in fact, he's the basis of it.

Another reason for which I have been so impressed is because he's created so much despite the sheer lack of runners in the team. When Walcott was in the side, with Ramsey as well, Ozil looked electric. Why? His biggest talent is picking out through balls, and when you've got no-one running onto them, you're not going to get the best out of him. Despite this, his overall contribution has still been great.

This isn't enough for some people.

This is his first year in the league. The same people who love to criticise Ozil also criticised Drogba, and Suarez, and many others. He's still settling in to a much faster league, and it's going to be tough on occasion. His top level is higher than any other player in our side, and he will only get better.

He isn't afforded any time to settle in. There is a quite frankly nasty media agenda against him where he is blamed for things that have nothing to do with him. BT Sport today, when we were 4-0 down(!) still spent the half moaning about how Ozil hadn't produced anything, and was 'lazy.' Ozil has run more than any other Arsenal player this year. It's difficult as well to look good when your side is being demolished. Any mention of Wilshere's display? Arteta's? They were at fault today - not Ozil.

It's beyond ridiculous. Yes, he has the odd poor game. He also has the odd unbelievable game, like just recently, when he completely turned the Southampton game around for us with some sublime play. I don't think I've once heard it mentioned. This thread certainly wasn't bumped then.

All the criticism he has received flies in the face of EVERY school of trained monkey thought. You have to be patient with players new to the league. You have to grade the second season more harshly than the first. This is why GCSEs are at 16 and not at 11, etc, etc. You're trying to avoid being knee-jerk in the judgement of a person.

Christ almighty.

Good post he will come good, but i think people criticise him more because he was signed to be the proven world class talent. Suarez and Drogba in comparison were more of unknown quantities, people were expecting Ozil to come to the league and immediately recreate some of the performances we've seen from Aguero Suarez and co.

Excellent rant.

Ozil really is an excellent player and let's be honest, any United fan would have taken him during the summer. Jealousy plays a part a hell of a-lot of the time when it comes to criticising opposition players. I have always liked him as a player and trying to find a reason to criticise him is kind of pathetic.

Well said.

I really wanted us to sign him after the 2010 World Cup, but I suppose there was only one team in it at that time.

Threatening to fizzle out completely this season. Cant afford to do that having had so much money spent on him

As I said earlier in this thread. Ozil is a specialist. He doesn't ran games. He helps kill them off. I personally don't see what the fuss is about his performance today. The entire Arsenal team was shit and once that happens an extreme specialist like him is rendered ineffective. It's one of the draw backs of having him in a team. But it isn't a massive disadvantage to have. As long as his team is functioning at a decent level the guy is a handful to face. He wont however dig a team out of self inflicted holes like the one Arsenal dug for themselves today.

I'm still appalled that another manager walked into the same trap Rodgers laid for AVB at white Harte Lane. Making catching fullbacks out of position count on the counter. Even Martinez walked right into it.

Which is silly. Because he is a totally different kind of player. He helps kill off teams. He doesn't carry teams.

Loosing the ball, like Özil did, so that Liverpool scores is bad. Not bothering to run back at all is horrible. He was bad today, as he always is against top teams. Great footballer, but the intensity in his defensive play and duels have to be changed. Don't know if it's down to his mentality or just that he is not bothered at times (like Berba).

He's not a terrible player, he wasn't directly responsible for a 5-1 loss but he showcased the argument of his inability to affect big games yet again. Doesn't matter if Arteta and Wilshere performed a good Carrick & Cleverley (13/14) impression, Ozil was bad, very bad. It's not a crime to tell the truth, he was bad. BAD I TELL YOU

Arteta/Flamini, Ramsey & Ozil is our best midfield trio. Problem is our front three trio is nowhere near as good as it needs to be imo. I'm happy with Theo, Giroud is so frustrating it is unreal and left side has been an issue for us. As long as two of those front three are very good I think we'd see a dramatic improvement in our attacking play.

For all Ozil's faults every time he looks up there are no runners so has to look for the safe pass and Giroud is usually tussling with the CB rather than making clever runs and more recently his hold up play has been terrible. I don't think Ozil even has many more than 5 or 6 games with Theo and that is the player who is always making those runs.

English mentality right there. As long as you run around

How has Wilshere done this season?

Freak result. He's a good player that would have improved most if not all of the top teams. Signing players of that nature, breeds confidence into any team and if they show an improvement end of season to last, there's no escaping it. The fact is we weren't in for him so not much to say really. If his signing encourages others to sign for Arsenal who wouldn't have then I think they'll take the odd bad result -

Seems to me the issue is really a complete lack of pace in behind when Walcott/Ramsey(to some extent) are out. That's the issue with our team. That and the fact Arteta isn't up to it.

From Arsemania:

With every passing game I worry that Özil may be Arshavin the 2nd

When the game is high paced he really struggles. I've noticed he seems to like the games where he can knock a few passes back and forth and work a position for himself. But like today Liverpool gave him 0 time and was up his back before he could even take a touch. Clearly doesn't relish the tough side of the game yet either. I expect him to get jonesed on Wednesday.

I didn't see the game but it seems quite a few people are saying he didn't affect the game at all. I think his overall performances have been a bit mediocre (by the standards of his first month or two) for a while but he often influences the game by doing something brilliant. Even at his best at Madrid he floated in and out of games.
