Mesut Özil

Psh. Ronaldo made the runs. All Ozil had to do was execute perfect passes.

yeah, where would Ronaldo have been without guys like Ozil and Di Maria feeding him?

It works both ways, as opposed to looking up and seeing Ronaldo and Higuain making runs he's looking up and seeing Olivier Giroud and Nicklas Bendtner

I'm sticking with this. It's what I thought before the season, it's what I thought a few months into this season, and it's what I think now.

The people who think he's some kind of football god are mostly the same types who go on about "key passes" or heat maps. Or in other words, bellends.

He's the sort of player who turns a 3-0 win into a 4-0 win, a 0-0 into a slightly less angry 0-0, and a battling defeat into a limping, pathetic surrender.
Now you're underrating him. He's really not that kind of player at all. These are just some examples:

An attacking player is going to be periphery when his team concedes 4 goals in the opening 19 minutes. The Mertesacker, Sagna, Monreal and Arteta threads should be bumped, not Ozils.
To be honest, I didn't see the game- just taking the opportunity to make a quip at Arsenal's expense. My man-gimp of a brother is a Liverpool fan and he said Ozil was awful, but then again he's a Liverpool fan....

Too true.

He just needs a bit of time to adapt to the league and to his new team like Modric did with us his first season. Next season I'm certain he'll be firing on all cilinders again like he did at Madrid.

People are too quick to draw conclusions, just like they did after having just played one or two games and he was the second coming of Jesus for some.

Hard to say who will do better next year, him or Mata. I predict they'll have pretty similar seaons.

Ozil needs to work on getting tougher on the ball and adding more urgency to his play when he's closed down. He's too lethargic at times and needs to realize that some fouls which were give 8 or 9/10 in La Liga won't be given in England. The two times he lost the ball yesterday was him thinking (rightly or wrongly) he was fouled.

Off the boil is now a massive understatement. I still think he's ludicrously talented as a number 10 but his last few performances have been dire. Not playing like a 42m pound player.

Undoubtedly a class player, but had we signed him and our season had still gone the way it had, he'd be getting criticised now.

I think Ramsey being absent is massive.

They are missing Ramsey who's improved massively this year.

Ozil is a typical luxury player. Very gifted but seems to lack stamina and so far hasn't really stepped up like a Suarez or a Rooney to really take a game by the scruff of the neck and make things happen.

They have plenty of players who do what he does and for me they'd have been better breaking the bank for Suarez in the summer. I suspect a big enough bid and he'd have happily moved to London.

Maybe people's expectations were elevated due to the price tag but he's never really seemed the type to drag a team across the finish line, or grab a game by the scruff of the neck when it's going against you. He's a class player and has moments of class and moments of magic that can decide games. But is he the one you look to in games where you need to dig in and put in a shift with more effort and endeavour over pretty intricate passing? There are always games like that in the season even for the better teams who are used to dominating. I remember he used to fade late in games at Madrid and got subbed off quite a bit. I wonder if playing 90 mins more regularly is taking its toll.

Anyone expecting him to grab a game by the scruff of the neck or expecting him to carry a team has simply failed to understand the type of player he is. He is a specialist. He specializes in helping to kill off teams or helping teams or stars to shine even brighter and climb above their best level when they are functioning. A role the solely depends on his team mates. If they don't perform, he can't help. But if they are functioning, he can make them even more efficient. Metaphorically speaking, he is basically a catalyst for a chemical reaction rather then the reason for the reaction.

You're spot on.

Hazard started the season poorly and got criticism. Now on the last few weeks a lone he's getting huge praise from everyone. Football fans are fickle, and probably have the memory of your average goldfish

Was about as bad as I've ever seen him against the Pool.

I wouldn't jump to many conclusions right now, still.

I remember at the time of him going to a Madrid a lot of people were pissed off we didn't get him as they felt he have played in centre midfield for us. The Caf scoring network was a little off on that one.

He's definitely due a performance against us. I think we'd all rather it occurred in a dead rubber like tonight, no?

He will do well tonight. He always plays well against midtable teams.

Well he should play well tonight. We have a major problem tracking midfield runners that Ozil can pass the ball into...

I think he wasn't involved enough for big parts of the game but finished quite strongly.

Did well when he was on the ball but wasn't as involved as Cazorla who i thought was their best offensive player tonight. Every time Cazorla was on the ball my heart was racing, didn't get the same feeling about Ozil.

I thought he played well. It's hard to play with a player like Giroud.

Really? Giroud and Ozil are a brilliant match, he's excellent at making runs and that's Ozils speciality. It was just his finishing was utter dross today.

This really surprised me, he usually fades away after 70, but the final 20 was his best.

I was thinking of this thread when he lined up that free kick. That was a nervous few seconds...

Yes. Giroud does make some very good runs but his anticipation is often poor. What I think Ozil has missed the most this season is Walcott.
