So we have Bayern

With bayern you need a very wide back-line, their main threats come from inverted wingers in Robben and Ribéry, Mandzukic is their weak link, you need wingers that double back and help, you also need two DMs that make blocks against players like Kroos and Schweinsteiger.

The main problem is when you break you need support for your strikers, you need pace on the break and that's what United doesn't have, so who do we start? I'd say we start Welbeck on the left mid to be honest.
Maybe it's a good thing Evra got booked so. Hopefully Moyes uses this opportunity to play a back line that can defend quickly.

1. It's good for TV, great for fans
2. Great atmosphere
3. Our players will be bumped and motivated
4. If we go out (god forbid) we won't be too downbeat
5. If we go through, then the season won't finish prematurely and players/fans have more bragging rights
6. Facing a lesser team does not mean we will walk it so might as well facing the big guns so we will actually prepare.

All positive.

I won't be so sure about Evra's suspension being a good thing. I think Bayern's right hand side can be vulnerable if they put Lahm in midfield and Rafinha starts. Robben hasn't got the workrate of Ribery who'll certainly cause problems on the left side in addition to Alaba who's a great left-back. With Evra we would've been a bit open at the back but he would provide so much of an attacking threat against Rafinha. Evans is solid but will offer zero penetration.

The thing to remember here guys is.

Bayern Munich are beatable, it's important the players don't look at the team sheets and be blown away by the names and the stars on the opposition team, yes they are the reigning European Champions, but history also says no club has ever retained the Champions League.

On the night anything can happen, it's 11 human beings on a field, versus another 11 human beings, we all make mistakes, or have a bad night, and Bayern could have that, if you win key battles, individual battles, and take your chances... it's possible.

It might be a long shot, but the United team can do anything, this season they are a shadow of their former selves, it doesn't mean they aren't capable, the midfield of Manchester United is very questionable, but it's a wake up call for the team to step up to the plate, or be replaced during the summer, this next game is the acid-test to our team against the very best, we can truly see who is there for the big games, who performs, or what area we really need to be improved.

You never know, a big shock could be on the cards, in 1999 we beat a Juventus team with some of the very best players in the world, even Zidane at his very best, and we went on to beat Bayern against the odds, it's doable.

Are they though? When did they last even lose a match that mattered to them? On a night anything can happen yes, but this is 2 nights.

You sounded like you think our players do not have the qualities at all. Remember we have quite a few who have been there, and done that. Granted, we have a manager in Moyes who does not have experience but it is exactly the arena when our players know they have to step up on the plate and make the two nights count. We have two chances to show we are United, we do what we want, even having a Moyes getting in the way. :)

It just had to be Bayern Munich didn't it. I'm excited, but in a season when we have already been embarrassed by our domestic rivals time and time again, I'm sure that Bayern out of all of our european rivals would love to join the party and give us a good hiding, given our history with them.

I just don't think we have a cat in hells chance of beating Bayern over 2 legs with the second leg in Munich too. Doesn't mean I don't want it to happen but I'm a realist.

I'd love to be optimistic about this but I can't see us beating bayern. I mean, under Moyes we get stuffed by Liverpool and City, so it's going to take a ridiculous amount of luck or a really really rubbish performance by Bayern, neither of which is going to happen. All I can hope for is for us to learn from the experience and try and inculcate some of what they're doing over there.

Football bloody hell! I know in the back of your mind you think we have a chance if Fergie is still at the helm, and we'd (Fergie would) know how to approach it in two legs!! Damn it we don't have Fergie to make it interesting and more positive :(

If we beat Bayern it will have to be an against the run of play job like against Barca in 08. If RVP and Rooney play blinders, and DDG at the other end, it is possible.

Edit: Just found out RVP is out. Over to you, Danny.

Horrendous draw but at least we are all buzzing for the next few weeks. I'd say Phil Jones needs to be kept in cotton wool until the first leg - we'll need him to pressurise them in midfield (and none of Carrick, Fellaini or the 40 year old Giggs have that energy). As for the forward line, is there a case for rejecting 60 years of tradition and sticking the Belgan big man upfront? We don't deal well with a Pep pressing game and Fellaini would offer much more options for the long ball than our other forwards. He may be largely underwhelming but his ability to bring down a pass with his chest is just about the best I've ever seen.

We are going to win. I've convinced myself of it. I won't hear anything other. Don't care what our league form is like. We are going to win the European Cup. I'm going in with blind faith.

Well technically, we do ;)

We should enjoy it. These big nights aren't likely to come around for a while. Bayen look almost invincible but we have a slim chance if we actually decide to turn up. We've put in so few top performances this season that I have to believe we're owed some more. We did the business against Olympiakos and now we need to conjure up something again.

We've got to put plenty of pace and quality out there on the pitch to give us a fighting chance. Sitting deep trying to nullify them is like waiting for the inevitable. We've got to defend resolutely, win back the ball and counter attack fast.

---------------DDG
Rafael---Smalling--Ferdinand--Evans
--------------Jones
-------Giggs---Carrick---Kagawa
----------Rooney--Welbeck

Sit deep with Jones pressing in front of the back four. Rely on Rafael for width on the right with Jones plugging the gap when he's up the pitch. Rooney and Welbeck putting a massive shift in around Schweinsteiger, Kroos, Thiago, try to break play there and attack their back four with Welbeck's pace.

We did the business literally by the skin of our teeth. De Gea made ridiculous saves and RVP done pretty much what he done for us all last season. Moyes has been relying on individual brilliance too much for my liking, and that was one of the few times he's gotten away with it this season. We'll need to play as a team to beat Bayern over two legs, never mind win the Champions League.

When I think of Utd vs Bayern...the words 'Anal rape' spring to mind......They are going to absolutely take the piss out of us whether you want to believe that or not.....

But on a positive side it gives us something to look forward to and brings a few extra shillings into the club and gives Moyes a chance to see what a real team is like

Hurray for blind optimism!

What a weird sensation, to be going in to a Champions League quarter final as massive underdogs. I like it. The tension, the pressure that's been so obvious at times at home this season will be out the window, there'll be an unbelievable atmosphere, why not? Why the feck not? They looked like they loved that the other night, tearing in to tackles, playing off the passion in the crowd. What have they got to lose? I can't wait.

Really mattered? You mean no preaseason stuff or dead rubbers with two legs where they won on aggregate?

October 28th 2012

Last Bundesliga match they lost at home against Leverkusen where Leverkusen won with two slapstick goals.

Would be interesting, what side the "king" positions for...

That is him on Monday when he partied with all Bayern players at Bastian's costume party...

Bolt always tells he is Man Utd fan - but he is in Munich very often as his doctor is the Bayern doc and he works with one of the physicians of Bayern - and is a friend of Schweinsteiger and some Bayern players.

For some reason I got a vision of Lance Armstrong after reading this bit

we might get beat double digits over two legs honestly. but at least i'm going to be able to enjoy watching bayern's football.

our midfield is just so weak at the moment, and bayern under pep are a team that build on dominating the ball... it is utterly lopsided tactically and quality wise. robben and ribery should destroy evra and rafael.

i'm looking forward to what dave g can do. i trust him to be huge for us.

It's probably already been mentioned, but it's crazy to think that a player who was considered a reasonably senior player for us when we played Bayern in the CL final 15 years ago might possibly feature in one of these games.

You do not have to. Else it probably would open up a landslide...

He is a muscle doc - one with some unconventional methods but nothing illegal. All of his sprinter collegues etc. (all the Americans and the Jamaican) use the same doctor, Tiger Woods, a lot of the golf professional... And not only them. He is the doctor of the German national football team, of some of the skiing team, Gerrard and Owen have been treated by him before, too. Or Ronaldo (not CR7 - the original one). Or Will Greenwood.

Yes. Lucas Scholl, the son of Mehmet Scholl, right now often does training sessions with the Bayern team. He is 17... Scholl has been 28 at the final. Guardiola is born 71...

I once had to seek the services of a munich-based knee specialist. This guy was (at that time) team doctor for 1860, Unterhaching, the german ladies downhill skiers team, and some others. That doc sent me to a orthopedical shoe-maker of some reputation, Müller-Wohlfahrth uses the same guy. He had a "national" and an "international" treatment room. They were named after the pro jerseys decorating the walls, people he already had treated. In the "international" one there was half the english national side's jerseys (i remember Gerrard), Usain Bolt's, a couple of international CC-skiers, and, amusingly, Hamann's Liverpool shirt. Non surprisingly, the "national" one had a full set of DFB, FCB and 1860. And one from Jan Ullrich :D

So people are flying in from around the world to have some soles made...
Seems to me that there are a number of doctors in the sports world who are known for their skills, each for their speciality. Crucial Ligament - Steadman/Vail, certain muscular issues - Müller-Wohlfarth, for example, and that is where everyone is going. I'm sure Mr. Steadman also has treated a few top athletes who were later found doping, doesn't mean he was involved. There are specialists for this, also - like Fuentes or Ferrari.

Bayern have a much better team than us but (1) IF we play to our strenghts and (2) IF we are very lucky, we have a chance to beat them. Two big ifs indeed but it is not impossible to win the tie. Maybe we aren't (significantly) worse than Chelsea in 2012. They were extremely lucky though.

Our saving grace is DDG, aslong as we can restrict them to long shot's I feel fairly confident he could get most of them.

I fear though we will be opened up on the counter attack at home, and they will get a couple vital away goals.
