I was confident of at least a draw last night prior to the game. A positive result last night was needed for progression. There's still hope I suppose.

I'll be happy if they give a good account of themselves and show the world we're still a force. It would at least give our supposed summer recruitment some lift.

There is no other tactic that could have helped us yesterday (or in the next match). You can't outplay Bayern with our players (and possibly not even with much better players).

We should have gotten a lot more men forward when we did have chances to break. Instead our full backs, Carrick and Fellaini mostly just camped within 15 yards of Rio/Vidic, that's no way to score goals. We were more interested in not being hammered than in winning the tie, which is essential if we're to progress.

I expected us to progress even before a ball was kicked in this tie, and stand by that. I expect a 2-2 draw in Munich. We will definitely have joy on the counter.

They have the away goal.

United cannot use the same tactics in the second leg and hope to win.

I don't get this kind of thinking.

We scored, created the clearest opportunity of the game and limited Bayern heavily. De Gea made 2-3 really good saves, max. It's not like we were getting hammered. Why on earth should we change what gave us a good chance and play in a way that hasn't worked all season.

People lambast Moyes (and rightfully so) for not even trying to play the same way when we have half decent performances, yet we have people wanting him to do exactly that.

Play the same way and hope to nick a goal. As soon a we open the game up - we lose. If we are still in the game by the 75th minute, go for it. They will get nervous, they are only human and like we saw tonight, they can be got it.

Nothing changes if we concede one goal - we still have to score.

1-1 after extra time. Penalties and Robben+Ribery miss. We score all ours.

I voted "draw" in the home leg. It'll be very interesting to see how both teams line-up next week. I think we could conceivably get through with a scoring draw/penalties, but we'll need another huge defensive performance and total focus through-out the whole match.

I just hope Moyes rests everyone against Newcastle. I'd also want to see Kagawa come in for Giggs and Januzaj to be the first attacking option to come off the bench. Keep Young away somewhere with Cleverley.

My guess - creditable defeat. 2-0, something like that. Something that will settle neither the pro-Moyes or the anti-Moyes argument.

That said, given how Wellbeck really gave them a torrid time when we got to use his pace, I think we'll get some chances. If only his finishing matched his touch, pace and power outside of the box.

I think we can dare to dream but we will go out . .

Not sure how the game will go on the night but I would like to see things be really tight until at least HT. At that stage I think nerves will begin to get to Bayern and United could very well start building momentum.

An early goal for Bayern could be disastrous as we have seen how united have responded to going a goal down in many games this season and it hasn't been pretty . .

One game does not make a season and while last night was a positive result (given whats happened this season), I still think people need to have a realistic expectation for the return game. We are still banking on everything going for us in the second tie. Few teams win the CL without some luck on the way, we need a sh*t load next week to progress . .

If Pep is smart, he'll set Bayern up to defend, draw United forward, and then expose Rio and Vidic's lack of pace.

When United attack, Bayern can counterattack with Robben, Ribery, Muller and Gotze.

We can hope that Bayern will attack because it is natural for them and because they are at home because if United has to chase the game I think there will be only one winner.

I think this might happen. The danger, from Pep's perspective, is that we score when they draw us forward. I honestly think that's the key. An early United goal will be key, but of course then Bayern will pour forward and it'll be our turn to counterattack. We're going to have to be as clinical in front of our rare sights of goal as we've ever been.

We need to defend deep like yesterday and wait for them to make the first move, if we keep it 0-0 until mid way through the 2nd half, throw Fellaini up front and play like a Pulis team.

Because Onus is on us to score not them. They go through with 0-0, we don't. If United set up with 10 defending the goal again, Barca won't over commit players to give United an out on counter. They were cautious against Arsenal as well, will be even more so now.

That is the plan and wait till late in the game to go for it, smash and grab...

Exactly that; smash and grab. Play our defensive strategy for the first 75-80 minutes, trying to grab a goal on the counter and keeping it 0-0. If at 70-80 that is not looking promising bring on 2 attacking subs and throw the bus we just parked straight at them.

What's the point in being on a fan forum and coming in and giving an impartial opinion on something like this? Bollox to that. A famous 1-0 victory. It's happening.

I think we can improve on Wednesdays display actually, but still using it as a base.
Conceding the ball and staying tight at the back, worked well for us. It helped us with our defensive injuries, as it played into Rio and Vid's strength positioning blocking, tackling standing up and aerial duels, and away from their weaknesses which is pace.

Where we can improve is in the transition. We need to give the player who wins back possession more passing options to fully regain control of the ball. Which means options around him getting into space not just hurtling forward. Once we make the initial pass to a man in space, that player is the one who should be looking for the runners to break quickly.

I mentioned this in a thread about Fellaini, he gave it up a lot because he had very few options that were within his comfortable passing range (which is frankly limited). If options had come to him to receive the ball, he would have completed more passes and we might have turned more possession into more attacks.

If we can improve on that away from home, I think we can have a much more effective transition and create more opportunities to score on the break.

I expect we'll get beat 1 or 2-0. I suspect that Moyes will go defensive, and I think that will cost us.

The results of 1st leg poll is just  now as the option with least vote happened.

What's your prediction after 2nd leg away at Allianz Arena? Can United pull it off or will it be Bayern having the last laugh?

I've borrowed this poll for the homepage. Was going to run with something similar anyway... :)

If we give Mata a pair of stilts and an afro wig maybe we can pass him off as Fellaini having a really good day?
Even if we somehow fool them in appearance, they will likely ask for DNA after the game when Mata plays well.

I fancy Bayern to win 2-1, or pick us off 3-1 if we end up going for that second goal (if we even get the first).

We've got a chance though, that's the main thing (and I get to watch this one)!

I wanted you to get smashed to dent your confidence, but i did think you'd manage to draw a leg and then get beat in the tie overall which looks most likely to happen. You needed to win the game without them scoring to have had any chance i think.

Arsenal, City and Chelsea have all beat them away since 2012 though (although the Chelsea game was the final)....

Optimistic me: We'll snatch it 2-1 or 1-0

Pessimistic me: We'll put on a good show, defend for our lives and lose 2-0, Mandzukic and Muller.

Logically I'm not leaning either way, though the fan in me is nudging me more towards optimisim.

I refuse to get optimistic the about this tie until ref blows for full time and we have a scoreline that sees us going through.

We should be under no illusions. Bayern are still massive favourites, lets not forget how inconsistent we've been this season. I don't see us scoring more than once over there, we won't see enough of the ball, so the defence will have to be feckin' incredible.

Gone for United as I saw enough to know that Bayern are a better team, but United can hurt them.

I think there will be a significant amount of belief inside the United team, and that for all the possession that Bayern had, it was a screw up that cost us a win. If we had all the ball and drew I think we would be affected - psychologically. United players were probably expecting a Barca experience, and it didn't materialize. I think Bayern have been affected and it is clear from their comments about the game.

Welbeck must know he has the beating of their defence, Rooney and Kagawa saw they had time to create opportunities, Carrick and Fellani protected the back four well, and our defense pretty much kept Muller, Ribery and Robben out. A bit more composure on the ball and I think we will do OK.

I will go for a 2-2 or 0-1 to United with Bayern having 80% possession and United having 1 sent off.

First game I predicted 1-0 with Bayern having 80% possession, so close.

What today proved was what good youth we have in the squad though.

Build the team around: De Gea & Jones at the back, De Gea definitely needs his contract buffing up soon, but Vidic and Rio really were great tonight, thing is they weren't tested for pace as they parked the bus, if Rio and Vidic pressed up the field that is where problems occur.
Which is why Moyes went with Vidic & Ferdinand. Really can't see past Bayern at home. They didn't play very well at OT and can't see them repeating that in front of their home fans ... 3-1.
