Liverpool

If Liverpool do win the league. It will be the ONLY league title anywhere to have been won via a penalty shootout.

It seems the refs are finally buying into the media love-in that has followed them for the last 15 years.
What media love in? That refs don't like them? They have had more than 25 penalties now in the past 2-3 seasons. Gerrard's 11 out of 13 goals have been scored from penalties.

Ohh-kay. Never heard it before though. It was always YWNA before, and suddenly when you are challenging for the title, the anthem changed to "Poetry in Motion". Seemed odd.

Not really odd, "We are Liverpool" is just a new song, that's all.
You'll Never Walk Alone is still the anthem.

Media love in... You haven't noticed that every pundit on tele has been willing them on, for god knows how long? Its sickening.

Second penalty I thought was a valid penalty. But Suarez was miles in the box when it was taken - happens all the time but should've been disallowed!

Very rare for refs to pull back a pen for that.

Sure many pens from United have seen players encroach. Even happens here a bit.

Thats a bad example because the Palace players were encroaching and RVP scored. It would only be taken back in that scenario if he'd missed.

11 goals out of 90 have been pens. That's 79 goals that haven't been pens. Only City have scored more than 79 goals.

If Liverpool win the league it'll be because they are the best team with the best attack.

Well West Ham players were also in the box with Suarez...It would only be taken back in that scenario if he'd missed, no?

I haven't seen the penalty, but yeah.

  If we beat palace and Norwich then I was 4 off.

Had to do this.

4 is a lot to be fair, you predicted 2 dropped points against bottom 10, you will have dropped 3 times as much.

And Liverpool won't win the league, City will.

If you have players like Suarez, Sturridge, Sterling and Coutinho ... tricky players with great control who take it into the box and can dance around defenders .. then you are going to win more than your fair share of penalties. The more shouts you get the more likelihood the ref will get a couple wrong. United very well know this from their title chasing teams when they had the same mentality, get top quality players into the box and you'll win plenty of them, including sadly the occasional dive (Young and Suarez).

As for the media loving us .. you can't be serious, are you ? Fleet street love their own, Arsenal, Spurs and Chelsea are prime however it's tough even for Fleet St to back Arsenal (and Wenger) at this stage and Spurs have been dead and buried for a while.

Sadly I agree .. but there is still a chance, just we need to win 14 on the bounce and I don't care who you are that is a major ask, especially with City & Chelsea to come.

Wow, this is really bitter. How's about giving a little credit where it's due?

City will win all their home games until the end of season without a doubt IMO, it all boils down to the away games - Palace, Liverpool and Everton.

As for you aside from Newcastle on the last day you have no easy games left - I think you'll win 2 or 3, lose 1 and draw 1. It won't be enough as City will be 2 ahead of you if they win their two games in hand which they might well do.

Chelsea won't win it IMO. Too much job left to do, City won't drop enough points to let them back in it.

Great title race aside from the teams involved.

I couldn't believe how dumb Tomkins was yesterday when he conceded the first penalty, even if he didn't handle the ball, Suarez had him beat because he stupidly threw himself at him. The high number of penalties Liverpool have received is mainly a consequence of their play, their skilful players inside the box and the stupidity of PL defenders. Yes they do get the occasional one from a blatant act of cheating but they're rare in comparison to the rest.

Everton could be the key to the league, if they are in contention for top 4 City won't get anything easy at Goodison. If City can drop points away to Norwich they can sure as hell drop points away to the two post form teams in the league

You're really in a great position to win the league. I consider you the favorites.

It's been so weird recently, even when we go behind I never feel like we are going to lose the team are playing with such fluidity and patience you know a winning goal is always coming. I've been to a couple of matches in the last few weeks and the stadium is absolutely bouncing with more buzz and more atmosphere than I have heard in along time, the fans are literally like a 12th man at the minute and I think that could be the difference against City.

From the bookies point of view we must be favourites to win all of those 5 when taken individually (at home to Chelsea and City and it's very rare that the bookies will go with the away team in big matches like these). I believe that at home we have the beating of both, City looked poor yesterday against Southampton for the first 45 mins and in some ways comparisons can be drawn between them and the way we play. We should have got something out of our match at City, if not won it (and that may indeed be the vital result that swings the PL their way).
Kompany believes we are the best team they've played against this season .... it'll be a monumental match that could end up with any possible result of Home/Away/Draw. I believe we'll beat Chelsea due to their lack of punch in attack (cue Torres to come back and haunt us) and momentum & belief could take us the rest of the way.

Latest % according to Sportsclubstats are City 48.5%, Liverpool 35.2% and Chelsea 16.3%

Apparently UEFA decided if Liverpool meet Real Madrid next year the usual format of 90 minutes won't be played, but instead they will immediately opt for penalty shoot-out.

I have give credit to Liverpool this season (previous posts) however i have never seen a team awarded so many penalties at crucial points in games. Fulham away, Sunderland away Us, West ham come straight to mind. Just makes you wonder sometimes.

With only Pool getting the chance to take them? Sounds fair ;)

At least we have a chance of playing them next year. ;)

As has already been said, we have been a good attacking side this year.
It stands to reason there is a chance of penalties being awarded, and most of them were correct decisions.

It just seems the comments about this are being twisted slightly because it's Liverpool, surely United have won crucial penalties too in the past? Based upon their success and attack minded policy.

What does it make you wonder?

That's small time. I heard the same about the many penalties we got in 2002/03. If most decisions are correct, then there should be no issue.

IF Liverpool win the league, they will deserve it. There is no two ways about it. And seeing that you lot have given us a lot of shit the last couple of decades because of us winning everything in sight, you should not expect a bouquet of flowers when there is a genuine chance of you guys doing it in the same season where we have failed miserably.

We didnt get anywhere near 12.
I have no stats at hand but im sure if i checked it would be around half of that amount.

Not true. The added benefit of not having to manage a squad through a European schedule plays it's part. Liverpool simply haven't had the same challenge as City or Chelsea.

City squad and team is the best in the league in my opinion.

That's not to say Liverpool haven't been brilliant though. If it was anyone but Liverpool I'd be wanting them to win the league for the football they've played.

I agree about the European schedule, however it's not like we don't want that. Just the opposite obviously.
Of course it's an advantage but we would love to be back in the Champions League and hopefully in the summer we now have chance to get the added quality in we need. If we can do that then the future is very bright.
Part of the need is to build a squad capable of challenging for honours, and yes obviously City's squad is the best in the league, but defensively I don't think they are as good as they should be given the financial resources they have.
