De Telegraaf is going all out on their Van Gaal story. Their 3 top articles on their sports page are all about Van Gaal. €100m does seem like a very low budget if he wants to buy 4 players as stated in one of articles. :( That's like £80m. Someone like Kroos would cost over £30m.

Maybe they mean net?

I think we'd spend around £120m. Our transfer budget has gone from £100m
to £200m. But at a investors conference, Woodward told investors that we'd be spending more than normal. So I wouldn't worry about that.

I hope if Van Gaal does come we stop playing players out of position, i.e. Smalling at right back. Our football has generally been pretty poor, but one of the most crushing things for me is seeing a player like Chris Smalling continue to have shockers at right back, get slated by many fans and pundits and no doubt having his confidence shot to bits, when IMO he's been our best defender this season.

As he's known for giving youth a chance, I think he'd rather chuck Varela/an actual RB in there rather than shoehorn more senior players to fill in, which would be brilliant.

I would find that hilarious. Ferguson basically undermining the managerial institution he championed so much himself by acting as a kind of shadow DoF.

Fergie's paid £2m per year to be a board-member & an Ambassador. Why wouldnt he be involved in transfers - giving that we might not have a manager contracted to us until mid-July & only 5 weeks left of the transfer window...

My dream of Rooney being destroyed is about to materialize.

Who says every player has to cost 20-30m pounds, though? A couple in that bracket and a couple of cheaper signings with the potential to improve, we don't need more.

Chicharito deal was sorted before the last WC - thats the only one i can think of relatin to United!

Well, we got Stam prior to the 1998 World Cup. In 2002 our focus was Rio and in 2006 Carrick (also later Hargo/Senna) so those were just never going to be done early.

By all means. But lets not hear of a United way of doing things anymore either then.

The best thing about hiring Van Gaal, besides his experience at high-level management, is that the youth and reserve will be given a real chance. This is something which perhaps we, with some notable exceptions, have been more reluctant to do in the last few seasons. I would really love to see the likes of Powell, Wilson, Rothwell or Pearson more involved with the first-team in the upcoming seasons.

According to Fergie (when discussed with Jockey Ruby Walsh) - United need to clear out & replace many of the players Moyes inherited, because they're not up to it..

Regardless of Moyes bein a disaster - many of the players will be leaving & many new recruits are needed:

1 or 2 CB's,
1 RB,
2 LB's (if Evra goes - then just one, with Buttner moved on)
2 or 3 CM's,
1 left-winger & maybe a right-winger aswell - with Young out the door & possibly Nani too..

Don't understand the transfer panic. Clubs change manager and buy players in the summer all the time.

Wow, what a list.

We need one left back, as I expect Buttner to stay. Hopefully Varela can be that backup RB. One centerhalf will be enough if we finally give the younger ones their real chance. We certainly do not need three CM's. Two would be a dream. And I don't see a need for wingers. We need to move away from that system.

We do. I said this last summer and I still think it. We need to make the hard choices. We need to bring in 3 and let go of a minimum of 2 Cms.

This summer is a muppets dream. I can't wait.

Imagine we signed Shaw, Strootman, Carvalho.... Lord above

30 million for an 18 year old English left back on 100k a week and two static dock workers and leg choppers, one at 30 plus million after humping the exhilarating high class portuguese league and the other a one season wonder in a league at the height of its powers with the Milan teams stronger than ever.

With suggestions like these we might as well bring Moyes back and labour on with his workman like tactics. We will have the players for it.

Van Gaal prefers working with what he's got and improving them to show off his coaching skills... plus he has the WC to deal with first. I suspect minimal transfer acticity. Certainly less than if Moyes had stayed or another manager had been appointed.

Its all about opinion of course, but i prefer us to get a shit-load of players in now & not have to worry about any major changes for a couple of seasons...

Oh & the more CM's we get in the better - 2's not enough!

I see the odds on Van Gaal has drastically reduced this morning. You could still get 8/11 at most bookies yesterday but now it's more like 1/5. I took 2.0 on betfair 2 days ago and it's now 1.26, gonna take the profit now I think.

I doubt Van Gaal will buy eight or nine players if he gets the job, couple of cms and a left back more likely, he likes to give youth a go so the cbs will be given a fair crack. Why spend all the cash before he gets his foot in the door and evaluates the squad firsthand. I presume he will sort out the glaringly obvious and move on from there.

Carvalho & Shaw would be outstanding signings..

It has never stopped us in the past.

I hope to God that Young and Valencia are both sold.

His foot wouldnt be in the door til mid-July+

Folk on here seem to regard the clubs money as their own - feckin blow a shit load thats what i say.. Ed seems to agree with me on that score!

Look at van Gaal's history of buys... the most spectacular name is Robben and even then he was bought because the Bayern board overruled him.

He promotes youngsters and is firmly proud mentioning that he makes players better. He will work hard on Fellaini and Cleverley.

Good news! He was honestly the best manager available manager, Klopp already said he won't leaving and so did Pep. I wanted someone very different to Moyes and Fergie and LvG is that man. He plays good football, believes in youth and doesn't care about player ego! What more do we want?

First post in the mains!

van Gaal is an exciting appointment. He's also very decorated. He's practically won everything to be won. (Dutch league, La Liga, Bundesliga, Champions League, Uefa Cup). Only thing left really is the English Premier League. He will be hungry for it. More so than others because of his age as this is his last chance. He may even want desperately another champions league too!

That's not true. Louis van Gaal was very much involved in the Robben transfer and specifically asked him whether he could play as a right winger for Bayern München. So the Bayern board didn't overrule LvG on Robben, that signing was a mutual effort by the coach and the FO.
