United linked with van Gaal in the meeja

I can't understand why we suddenly give so much of a shit about our coaching staff. I don't remember this time two years ago people insisting Butt be promoted to a senior position or Giggs be given the role of player coach or Neville drafted back from Everton. Suddenly now it's an affront to some to suggest any of them shouldn't be there.

It's like we're pretending that the 'Manchester United way' of having a coaching staff crammed full of recently retired players didn't just happen to be chanced upon in mid April this year and that there's somehow some kind of long-standing tradition behind it.

To be perfectly honest, I am slightly worried that if LvG does come and keeps Giggs on, then they have a good working relationship, Giggs will be the manager of United again once he leaves.

I'm all for Giggs being apart of the club for many years to come but I think it would be very premature to give him the full time job without seeing him manage at another club first.

Everyone likes a Hollywood/ Fairy tale script until reality sets in. We do not know these guys outside of their roles of great players.
If we are to turn the page I say lets not take chances on possible sources of discontent.

This is a valid concern imo but it's probably looking a couple of years into the future. Hopefully someone like Klopp becomes available at that point.

Giggs wont be next manager after LvG automatically. And with LvG, he will kick Giggs out wihtout hesitation if he feels he's going against him. It might be tough but I feel this is exactly what we need, someone to shake things up a bit but in a good way while going with the traditions of the club

I agree but it may cause a rebellion by some fans.

I'm fine with Giggs being managed after LvG. I think it'd be perfect.

It won't happen though, realistically. If Woodward is still there there's no way he'll go for anyone other than the best possible candidate and Giggs wouldn't be that. Especially with the Moyes fiasco still fresh in everyone's mind as it would be, I'd doubt very much if we targeted anyone other than the best manager around at the time.

So i just woke up after long one year bear mode sleep. I heard we are going for van Gaal after Ferguson to manager the champions of England. I shall approve this.

Agreed. Giggs's best bet would be to be a playing coach under LvG in the coming season and then go manage elsewhere for a couple of seasons.

I hope Giggs isn't appointed after LVG. He still needs experience.

Plus, in that time a larger amount of managers will most likely be available - Klopp, Ancelotti, Guardiola, Mourinho Simeone, Conte, Martinez, Pocchettino etc

Maybe I'm being petty but I remember 1998, Kluivert acted like a bit of a tit that summer. We agreed a deal, only for him to turn us down.

"I did think about Manchester United, but any feeling I had about them went away very quickly.

"The only one club for me in England was Arsenal.

"But one day I might come to England. You never know. I'm only 22 and in the future it could all change and I would want to play in England. So never say never."

I remember Kluivert turning us down, I was gutted about that though in the end things worked out pretty well.

Cant see why that makes him a tit though. He didnt want to come to us and that's fair enough.

I always viewed that guy as a party animal, not sure how the hipsters of today would refer to it as, just.. he always "played" harder than he worked?, I don't hold a grudge for him turning us down in 98, the line he'd prefer Arsenal was all about the London lifestyle rather than the view of the club... I'm surprised he became a coach to be honest.

We have no idea about Giggs as a manager. Let's leave romantics out for a while and get United back on track before taking a risk again

Maybe. Yorke was a bit of a party animal though, I dont think it necessarily matters that much if you are prepared to work hard as well as play hard. Anyway like I said, its hard to care about it that much when things worked out like they did. I wouldnt swap the Yorke & Cole partnership for the world so Im glad he didnt come.

With rio, Neville and woods rumoured to be told to be going its safe to say a manager has now been agreed it just needs to be announced.

Giggs will be assessed by LVG if he is chosen as assistant. The club isn't going to make the same mistake again like they did with Moyes.

This is getting old, I hope the club announce this soon so we can all settle down.

I hope so.

The idea of the class of '92 taking over and bringing us title after title is great, but we have to be realistic.

If we make too many mistakes too soon, we could end up like Liverpool.

Exactly. So many missing the point that we were heavily criticised for a clear out last summer.

anybody think giggs influence could undermine Van Gaal?
The more I think about it the more concerned I am about this.

Not that Van Gaal isnt well equipped to deal with this, but still, it would be a damaging spat and its an unnecessary risk. I dont know what Giggs would bring to the role of assistant manager that is worth the risk of it. What is he actually going to learn watching Van Gaal that he hasnt already picked up watching SAF as a senior player with his ear?

He needs to cut his teeth out in the real world, on his own. He doesnt need to be put in the middle of an authoritarian new manager making quite difficult decisions and a squad full of his own friends and colleagues.

Till now I have been ambivalent about Giggs being assistant but Im gravitating towards being actively against it now.

:boring:

To be honest, having presumed this was done and dusted for the last couple of weeks, I'm starting to wonder if there are still some sticking points. What on earth does either party gain from not anouncing this already?

48 hours ago I'd have agreed but now with the announcement Ferdinand's future as well as that of Woods and Neville has been decided I think it's highly improbable such decisions were made without express consent of the new man. It'd be incredible if Woodward took it upon himself to decide the new manager can't have Rio Ferdinand or cannot make his own decision on his coaching staff.

I think these are the first change of the new regime, we just don't officially know it yet.

Maybe Woodward wants to get rid off the old guard so that LvG doesn't get accociated with getting rid of Rio/Evra/Giggs?

Just announce him already!!!

I'm going for Wednesday or Thursday. He wants the coaching roles to be sorted out before he is announced, according to Ogden, and now that we're seeing coaches leave it pretty much means it's very close.

All this talk about Giggs taking over after van Gaal. At the moment we're not even sure van Gaal will be here - all the delays. And secondly, who know what will happen over the next few years. If the last season has taught us anything it should be that anything can happen. Anything.

They are getting the clear-out out the way before making the announcement. That said, the Dutch squad have a day off tomorrow so I wouldn't be surprised if it's announced either tonight or sometime tomorrow.

I think he has a press conference tomorrow. I wonder if we'll wait until that's finished or maybe even announce it before hand so that the press can ask him questions about United and get it done with.

I would go with announcing it AFTER his press conference. The press conference will be purely about the Dutch squad so he won't want the press asking questions about him being confirmed as the new United boss and detract from his work with the Dutch squad.

Woowdward probably wants the job for himself and is taking out all the competition. You have been warned :wenger:

You just know the English press will still ask questions, in fact a few of them said they're going to be there!

Youd have to have massive balls to be the journalist who asked him a question about his United future at the Dutch team press conference. Imagine the dressing down that person will get. And yet someone will have to ask, its their job.
