Neither The Departed or Shutter Island is even top 10 Scorsese.
Wow, that's harsh on Shutter Island. I don't think it should be anywhere near the top 50, like I said in the submission thread, it only stands out because it was made in a decade with a significant lack of good hollywood thrillers, but 10 better Scorsese films?

Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Casino stand out, imo. After Hours and King of Comedy are personal favourites of mine and I probably rate Cape Fear higher as well, the intensity was terrifying when I first watched it. I rate Mean Streets higher than the flawed Gangs of New York, but neither is a better film than Shutter Island. If you want to include The Last Waltz, then it's better than Shutter Island as well, but the rest is in my book worse. (I haven't seen Wolf of Wall Street though, can't comment on that).

Not a big fan of remakes, so I tend to ignore The Departed, but Shutter Island still was a great film and refreshing at the time. The hype around it is really annoying though, but I'm not surprised that a very young generation of moviegoers saw something new in it.

Again, I'm curious about this 'young generation of moviegoers' who seemingly liked Shutter Island, which Revan alluded to also by calling them 'hipsters', I'm not sure I follow. As far as I know, just from my personal experience, it's actually not young audiences that appreciated it. Which I find quite understandable given the style of the film.

Shutter Islands is a good film but it belongs nowhere near a top 50 greatest film list especially when you see some of the films that have missed out.

I like Shutter Island, I just don't see it as one of my top 20 favourites, nevermind top 20 best films.

I thought Shutter Island was decent and all but seeing as someone spoiled it for me the shock value was kind of gone.

My top 10, maybe.

The King of Comedy
Goodfellas
The Last Temptation of Christ
Taxi Driver
Raging Bull
Casino
After Hours
The Aviator
Hugo
Shutter Island

It ranked at 40, so it's not that high up. I didn't put it in my top, I don't think, and there's a few I put in I know won't make it, but if Caf members rated it high enough, then so be it. I'm more shocked by some of the omissions and other inclusions than by Shutter Island so far.

So Shutter Island is in your top 10 after all ;). I hated Last Temptation. I loved Hugo, but some of the 3d effects were too annoying to consider it a great film.

The Max Richter score, 40's films nods and Max Von Sydow cameo tipped it over!

I really liked Last Temptation, fantastic performance by Willem Dafoe, though the hilariously miscast Harvey Keitel as Judas was a small blight. I never did watch Hugo at the cinema.

David Bowie as Pontius Pilate wasn't much better.

More recent films will always get a preference in these kind of votes because they are fresher in the memory, more available, and more people have seen them. If you hold this vote again a decade down the line Shutter Island will be forgotten, replaced by another average movie from the current decade.

110% agree!!

good film but to call it a great? If you we're to give "Great" movies a rating I'd say 8 and up, for me Shutter Island is at best a 7! Personally didn't really like the ending of Shutter Island, wasn't that big a twist either in it...some people hyped it up to ridiculous proportions when it was released..I thought Saw had a better twist!

Saw didn't have a twist, it had a cheap excuse of an ending. It's just hilariously bad writing, can't believe so many people thought it was exciting :(.

The guy on the floor?
For me that was better than SI ending! Wasn't expecting it! Just personal preference really...the rest of the franchise in Saw was utter muck though, that much is certain!

No one was, because it made zero sense and there aren't any hints towards it during the film. It lacks everything that makes writing great, mostly intelligence. Cheap effect, that's it.

You should maybe spoiler the ending, in case someone hasn't seen it. No idea how the rules are regarding spoilers in this thread.

He only was in one scene really and I thought he gave an aura to the character.
It's been a while since I watched the film, but he definitely left a negative impression. He usually does when he tries to act :(. He's way too strange as a real life character to be an actor, in my opinion.

apologies folks I'll fix that now

Well did it not show the lenghts he would go to show them to appreciate life? which is the running theme of the movie, he took people who committed acts which underminded their appreciation of having good lives... It was kind of explained in that scene... sorry probably not explaining myself very well!

Yeah, but there was no need for the twist to make that point. The twist did nothing for the plot, it was just supposedly cool. Anyway, we really really shouldn't discuss Saw in a top 50 films of all time thread. That's almost as bad as discussing 300 in that context.

I wouldn't say Saw had a twist. You're genuinely the first person I know of who didn't call that ending within the first 20 minutes of the film tbh. Mainly because literally no attempt was made at giving a viable alternative to that 'twist'. I don't even think they had much desire to distract the viewers from it. Decent enough film though.

Nah 300 is much, much worse.

Alien is timeless. Still the best science fiction horror I've seen. The special effects hold up, just like The Thing and Jurassic Park. Give me puppets, costumes, and machines over CGI.

Alien's greatness is down to 4 main factors I think:

1. The gloomy atmosphere and mood created by director Ridley Scott.
2. The plot twists. Chestburster, a member of the crew turning out to be a robot, acid for blood.
3. The absolutely awesome alien-creature design. Has there ever been a cooler, more menacing alien depicted on film?
4. The slow pacing of the film paves the way for the shock moments, increasing their impact.

Haven't seen the "King of Comedy" yet. I have not heard very good things about it. For me, Scorcese's best ever film by far is "Taxi Driver" Utterly brilliant film. Not a fan of "Goodfellas" at all, and "Raging Bull" even though it blew me away on the first viewing, it did not have even remotely the same effect the second time I watched it. "Casino" is very good, but not great imo. "Shutter Island" is very good, but not Top 50 material. "The Aviator" would be my eccentric pick from Scorcese's work. I know that many other of his films have received much greater acclaim, but for me, right after "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull", it will have to be "The Aviator" I am not a big fun of "The Departed" either.

I thought Come and See could have snatched a spot, but nope. :(

I knew I should have placed it higher. Being a non-Hollywood film makes it tough to get selected. Even me, a massive film buff, have not seen very much of world cinema. The film is also extremely tough viewing (much more harrowing than Schindler's List for example) which makes it even tougher. It's good to know that some people know and appreciate the film though. I even saw it ranked number one amongst war films in one British magazine recently.

Now, after submitting my list, I realized that I completely forgot about "The Shining" and "Citizen Kane". Oh well, you can't fit them all in...

People like you, should have been discarded at infancy. :D

I think I'm going to legally purchase and watch all of the Top 20 movies I haven't seen yet. I'm sure it will rain at least once this summer.
