Louis van Gaal | Manchester United manager

Barry Hughes is a legend. His story reminds me of a German talkshow where Van Gaal was invited once while at Munchen. His wife was sitting in the crowd. So at one moment the presentor got to talk about Van Gaal playing tennis with his wife on holiday. They asked his wife what it was like playing with him, and she put on a very sour face. Turns out Louis does not like to lose. At all. No matter what game. And he never lets anybody win to keep the game fun or something, not even when he is playing 1 on 1 against his sweet wife. The expressions they gave while talking about playing tennis together made some very good uncomfortable/absurd humoristic tv.

Van Gaal is born winner. He's used to winning and he'll do pretty much anything to win. He's next best thing after SAF, because those two are similar. One problem Van Gaal has is that he doesn't make compromises. That can be bad sometimes.

Next best thing after SAF but nobody on here wanted him when they had an option.
Was there ever option for Van Gaal to take United job last summer? As far as I know, SAF only wanted Moyes, and he had very large part in picking his successor.

Very true. There was nothing to suggest Laudrup would come here either, but even he was in the polls last summer.
And when Tottenham were being linked to Van Gaal before we were, the majority of people were like "He'll be good for them", "Tottenham will be another team with a better manager than us" or "we should go for him before they do", but nobody was that bothered.

He's probably the best we could get right now. But he's not suddenly better than the half a dozen managers everyone preferred a few months ago.
Everyone's suddenly an expert on him now too.

Interesting.....on zdf there's a regular slot with Hasan Salihamdzic interviewing players and ex-players from all nations, but all who play or played in the Bundesliga. Tonight he's talking with Mark van Bommel and they spoke about their managers. Van Bommel said Hitzfeld was a great manager, always listened........then he said but their were some managers from whom he learned nothing at which point Salihamdzic asked him about Van Gaal and Van Bommel said, hmmmm, grimaced and said that he was a good trainer, but a strange guy.

Mourinho was the next best thing after Ferguson. The powers that be were of the belief that they were too good for his persona, a decision was remains utterly shambolic, particularly when you consider our current standpoint

Van Gaal was the best available option we have right now, and I'm glad he's here. Let's not pretend we have some kind of younger Ferguson, though, we threw that opportunity away due to ill - conceived and costly arrogance.

This. None of us would have considered LVG and outstanding candidate when SAF retired and for very good reason too. Whatever about turning down the next best thing to SAF, there are certainly several managers around who are better than LVG and multiples of that who were better than Moyes.

Right now though? LVG is as good as we were going to get. If we see the best of him we'll certainly be very happy.

True. Perhaps it has something to do with Untied being linked with Mourinho and the fact we all knew deep down SAF will pick Moyes. Van Gaal isn't fancy option, and United was looking for one. Thus Mou rumor was the loudest, followed by Klopps. But that doesn't change the fact he has many similarities with Sir Alex and he's probably the best manager United could have gone for under subjective criteria 'is he available'.

Really good tactics and cohesion so far from Holland. Seems like Louis' intense training regimen is paying off.

I can't wait to see what he does with us next season.

David Moyes has never conceded a goal to Spain in his managerial career. Louis Van Gaal has. Coincidence? I think not. Do not want.

In all seriousness, if Moyes was in charge of this Dutch team, he'd have cried about having to start against Spain and zapped all the confidence from a set of players who were already being doubted by the media.

Shit's gonna get real at Old Trafford next season.

Upon realising the skill of some of his forward players, he'd have probably went to a grit factory and bought some Dutch grit to put on the field. He'd then have crocked RVP by breaking his leg, to ensure that he'd "play with determination and give it his all" in the actual tournament. Then, when the Dutch somehow lost to Faroe Marino who aren't even in the tournament, he'd have said they were playing well and needed a few months to come to grips with the tournament.

5 vs the reigning world champions :lol:

Louis, Louis, Louis Van Gaal!

Other than the main two (and Sneijder), this is a squad with few stars and mostly workmanlike players, but look at how van Gaal gets them playing.

We're in safe hands. Without a single signing we'll improve in leaps and bounds under this guy.

Great result but lets not go mad overrating LVG or this Dutch team either. Not like one result proves anything we didn't already know about LVG, does it?

Still, at least it should stop LVG arriving with the English media calling him a WC flop, that would have been irritating as feck.

I'm feeling a hell of a lot more upbeat about his appointment. Not that I wasn't before but the Dutch have been class!!

It's what he does with players you wouldn't call 'World Class' that's most exciting.

Due to injuries he goes into the world cup with a 5-3-2, a formation he has hardly tried, but such is his courage he'll play it anyway for the simple reason he thinks it best suits his current 11. And then this happens, to Spain of all teams.
