Overall poor game from the Dutch team and LVG, I don't think they are making themselves any favours by starting the matches with such negative formations and tactics. I think he will look much better when the opponent is of better quality as his 3-5-2/5-3-2 is really reactionary and counter attacking.
Van Gaal = Genius tactician.
1. Took off RVP and brought in Huntelaar at 75 mins.
2. Changed the system to a diagonal-long ball system. Hunter is good in the box and the idea was to capitalise on Holland's height advantage.
3. Feed the ball the Robben. At worst get a corner. Therefore enabling Holland's height advantage again.
Three moments that changed everything.

Congrats united fans. Fergie's time has been successfully replaced by LVG time.
Thought he got lucky today, vergaegh and wijnaldum were bad mistakes.
Pardon if Moyes comparison is not allowed, but this is what Moyes had to say about Van Persie:
"I think if I'd brought him off (against Newcastle) some people would say 'What are you doing? You are 1-0 down and you're taking off your top goalscorer.'"
Pales in comparison with what happened today, doesn't it...
Brave call to take off RvP and he got the reward.
Agree that he was lucky though. If they had lost that questions would've been asked about their performance and some of his decisions.
It's been a while so I don't remember, but if that was true I reckon you have a point. Benitez is still a better manager than Moyes, though. It can work both ways though. We used to laugh at Benitez for taking off Torres when they were losing.
i'm happy with a lucky one in charge of the teamWill be nice to have a lucky manager again won't it![]()
Looking forward to seeing Rooney get subbed a lot then next season!Really glad he showed he will sub anyone if he thinks that player isn't playing well.
I'd disagree, the sub to me proved that LvG can make the big decisions when he has to and isn't afraid to change the formation if things aren't going to plan.I thought that decision was quite obvious, to be fair. RVP was having a poor game and LVG clearly identified that with high amounts of pressure, a pure finisher like Huntelaar might be a better fit.
The fact Moyes didn't take RVP off when injured demonstrates his idiocy as opposed to proving LVG's tactical nous here.
squeaked through.
Wouldn't look too much of a genius if they'd gone out 2nd round!
As it is, they'll very likely cruise the quarter final, and all of a sudden have a big face off v Argentina

Losing 1 nil a lot of managers would keep their main striker on even if hes playing bad, few take them off for another player and change the system.
I'd agree with the Moyes and idiocy part.
Second this. RvP played too deep and ineffecitve. Most managers would tell him to play higher(or wider) and be more influential in the box while bringing another striker to snuff a goal. But LvG ins't most manager, he really shows us he got the balls here. Hat off.I'd disagree, the sub to me proved that LvG can make the big decisions when he has to and isn't afraid to change the formation if things aren't going to plan.

When LVG subbed RVP he was getting a lot of stick over here from the "experts"...but he did the right thing. Good Managers should never listen to what the fans are saying because most of them are clueless or let's put it milder, they are not in a position to make a good decision because they do not have suffice information.Moyes
"I think if I'd brought him off [against Newcastle] some people would say 'What are you doing? You are 1-0 down and you're taking off your top goalscorer,'" Moyes said.
"I think that answers why I left him on. Robin had a sore groin and, after he played really well against Arsenal, we gave him a week's holiday to recover. When he came back he hasn't really been right since then."
