£35m would be the bargain of the season, not only would he be the best player to move during the window but the benefit of a club extremely weak in midfield signing the best possible player money can buy would be immense.

If the price is established through using the press at €50m (£39m) and we might all agree that's fair, we're not going to bid that and sign him. It'll be an opening bid and work from there which is why United are clearly trying to convey that £34m is a bit steep. So once all the posturing is done and we make an official bid, it'll be as low as possible which gives both of us a middle ground to work towards.
You don't want your first bid to be what you are expecting to pay... Only to get rejected.
