Louis van Gaal | Manchester United manager

It's interesting that he is giving Cleverley and Blackett 90 minutes. I'd say that's a sure fire sign that those are two positions he is looking at before he buys in. Left defense and central midfield.

Or maybe its a game where they must prove themselves or get discarded

Just kidding

Moyes insisted on everyone adopting a Scottish Brogue apparently.

It's essentially what I mean though.

If Van Gaal sees something in them then it could decide whether he delves into the market. I'm desperate for him to put Fellaini into one of the games on this tour so he can see just how much his lack of ability sticks out like a sore thumb.

Strange when it's only Mata and Ander who speak Spanish, unless they're shouting back to DDG. Mata has been in England long enough that he should be confident speaking English on the pitch anyway.
Valencia too. Also, Nani and Rafael speak Portugese which is pretty similar so I imagine they can also speak that. Maybe he just means around the field in training too.

Anyone think we'll get a response from Louis to Mourinho's comments about Shaw's wages?

£120k a week for a young boy is ridiculous but we don't need to be told that by a man who has bought titles in every country he's managed in.
Mourinho actually hasnt said anything wrong. He gets asked why Chelsea didnt go for Shaw and he gives the reasons...which is basically Chelsea couldnt afford the wages in regards to FFP.
He said it all in relation to Chelsea and not Man Utds finances

I didn't think Jose's comments were that bad either.

It's not just about instructions though. It's seen as a big sign of disrespect culturally to speak in different language to what those around you speak. We had a couple of Polish KP's working in a kitchen I was in a few years ago and they were both banned from speaking Polish in the kitchen as they could both speak perfectly good English. Whenever they shared a joke in Polish the rest of the kitchen team felt uncomfortable, like they were talking behind someones back or saying something that couldn't be said in front of the rest of us.

Now I'm not saying there would be any sort of discontent like that in the United squad but you want your team pulling in the same direction and it doesn't exactly help with team bonding if conversations are being had in cliques and not shared between the team and squad.

He does have a point I agree but he's commenting on how Chelsea wouldn't pay an 18 year old that much as it upsets senior players who are on less having actually done something for the club.

He said the lad they just signed from Atletico who went all the way to the CL final and won La Liga was much cheaper. He's having a go at Shaw's agent really, and us for giving in to the wage demands.

Then you also have Valencia, Hernandez and I'd hazard a guess Rafael/Nani can pick up a few things too.

I agree and it can damage team spirit as well.

he is not having at a go at Utd at all...he said in the same interview “It would’ve killed immediately our balance and we couldn’t allow that. I don’t criticise another club for paying it. They can pay what they want. I don’t have any comment about it. But for my club we can say it would be very negative for us"

Over on "we ain't go no history", (the Chelsea version of thebusbybabe.com) they completely agree with what Jose said. Then again, Jose has god like status there at Chelsea.

What are you on about? Why use hypothetics to make up some sort of pedantic argument?

Our weakest position is midfield. He gave Ander Herrera 90 minutes last game to assess him and now he is giving Cleverley 90 minutes.

At left back, we need a backup option to Shaw. He gave Blackett 45 minutes against LA and now he's going to give him 90 to assess him.

It's clear our problem positions are midfield and defense - he's giving midfielders and defenders 90 minutes while everyone else gets 45. Who cares about "but what if that happened" arguments. "That" isn't happening, "this" is so this is what I'm discussing.
Yes, I'm using hypothetics but it's not about an argument. You are saying it's sure thing that because two players are playing 90mins it signals his intention to buy in that area. It's like saying Man Utd wear red, we all know that, it's nothing new, we know we have to bring in a midfielder and defender, van Gaal has alluded to that already.

My hypothetical scenario was a question to you asking what does it mean if a player plays 90mins in the next game?

I would love to see how our midfield performs without Herrera. Really looking forward to the Roma match to see how we perform against a decent opposition. Although it won't happen imagine Fellaini playing against Real later on in this tour. Would be hilarious...

Honestly I don't think I could have explained myself any further.

Van Gaal says he is assessing squad.

Midfield weak area.

Left back weak.

Van Gaal confirms Cleverley will get 90 minutes and Blackett will get 90 minutes.

It's called adding 2+2 and getting 4. It's an audition, they need to impress him to prove that he can trust them this coming season or they will drop down the pecking order and he'll bring in replacements.

Bringing up "what if it was a striker and goalkeeper" when it isn't is just plain stupid. If my aunt had a cock she'd be my uncle, what's your point?

Also pretty interesting how seriously he takes even the preseason matches. Would we have prepared to such levels for a meaningless game under even Fergie?

I think it's because he realises that this year we have to get into the top 4 and that means to hit the ground running come August. These games in pre-season serves as a good way to get things going fast against quality opposition. We should be facing Swansea at Old Trafford and absolutely smash them.

I understand that he is assessing the squad. He is a new manager and it's pre-season lol

Thanks for letting me know about the weak areas but I kind of had a hunch those were the areas and it's why I don't think their 90min 'audition' is the signal that van Gaal is in the market for new players. He has given a very good political answer to keep the players happy saying everyone will get their chance but he knows his targets and who he wants.

I think we are both on the same page, just turning it a different way.

How is our left back area weak when we have the likes of Luke Shaw playing there? We already have a backup for Shaw in James.

Thank god we've got proven backup for Shaw in the shape of Reece James. I'd completely forgotten about the two senior games he had played for Carlisle. No you're absolutely right, I'm happy going into the season with those two.

Our manager trusted him enough to give him a real chance and he was satisfied by his performance and that's good enough for me.

'The likes of Luke Shaw'. Do you not just mean Luke Shaw? Sorry to be a massive pedant, but it's a pet hate of mine on here.

 Mine too. The other one is players being pluralised, like when talking about Argentina at the WC some pundit said 'with the Lionel Messi's and Di Maria's they can really hurt you'.

I'm really impressed by Van Gaal's man management. Watching Van Gaal with Cleverley at his press conference, directing questions ask of him to Cleverley, patting him on the back, joking with him, Cleverley must have left the room feeling ten feet tall. From how Van Gaal interacts with the players you can see why he's had so much success developing youngsters.

Exactly, overhearing conversations is also part of the communication within a group. If two speak a different language than the others can understand, they exclude them completely from that conversation.

Van Gaal thinks that's very important. He spent two months in a monastry himself to learn German as a preparation for his work at Bayern.

Cleverley attends press conference with Louis, speaks about being a louis kind of player, gets to play 90 minutes today. I wonder if Louis believes confidence will make a player out of Cleverley
