Guillermo Varela

Phew, forgot about this. I guess it was just made up.

Hopefully he'll compete with Rafael for that right back spot this year. Does anyone here think he could play as a wingback in this current formation?

Good news he's still here. Hopefully if we do go back to 4-3-3 (which i'm doubtful of), we won't need to see Valencia, Smalling or Jones as RB.

I think he's a lot better RB than RWB and IMO he's not ready yet, Jancko despite having what I believe to be a lower ceiling is currently a better player

Seems he has left too. But no confirmation from anywhere.

Odd this at so many levels.

Strange deal. Can only think he couldn't settle here?

Seems Perez and Woody have just gotten together and divided up all the players in Europe amongst themselves this summer. Kroos was originally in Woody's pile, but then Ed traded him for Angel. We probably wanted James but they made a deal that we'll have Falcao instead, and we'll chuck them Henrnandez.

I like.

On a serious note, would be disappointed to see varela never given a chance here. Was good enough for a debut I think, and had real potential. Had a very good campaign last season, and our right-back situation was far from settled.

He deserves a chance, specially when he plays in the position where we need competition. Quality FB are hard to find. Gutted if we let him go and he makes it larger.

Been loaned out by the looks of his Instagram header.

Official instagram account from Guillermo Varela Player of Manchester United and Real Madrid

Nothing on the PL and Official site on this though. I am pretty confused at no announcement at all regarding this if true.

And sending him on loan there with option to buy is head scratching stuff in itself.

Guess he just wasn't settled here and wanted a move

Might be that they don´t believe enough in him or that playing with Real Madrid in the b team in senior League is believed to be better for his development. The language and his families trouble might be an issue. Many things might behind it. Best to wait and see.

i still find it amazing that James played at LB and he wasnt even in a squad for a game. From what i saw, he is pretty good too. I would have liked him to be here and play when Rafael is injured.

Very odd, no news about it here but it seems he has joined Castilla with a 5M option at the end of the season.

The Real Madrid finally managed to enroll in the competition to Guillermo Varela, right side will play one season at Castilla loan from Manchester United.

Guillermo Varela, Uruguayan right-back, 21, will play on loan at Real Madrid Castilla this season. The footballer, who comes from the ranks at Manchester United, was a request for Zinedine Zidane to reinforce the right lane and although the club does not officially confirmed its arrival in the subsidiary itself will this course.
And the Real Madrid footballer has entered the competition of Second Division B. Among the 22 registered players Varela's a will compete for a spot with Noblejas, who can also play in the left wing.
Thus, it is confirmed that Real Madrid managed to close the loan last minute Uruguayan footballer, reaching the white club with an option to purchase about 5 million. If you get a good season, Real Madrid exercised the purchase and who knows if I could qualify for positions in the future Varela in the first team.

Have we struck a partnership with Real now? This transfer does not make sense.

Odd loan this one. I assume he isn't going to be playing for their first team, so if he is just going to be playing reserve football, he could have just done that over here

Madrid B play in the 2nd(?) division in Spain so much different to just reserve football. There is also a 5m buy option so we must be open to selling him.

Ridiculous. Can't believe he didn't get his chance on tour this summer.

It'd be a great loan move actually, if he wasn't to be given a first team chance here. As limerickcitykid has said, they play in the 3rd division (league below Liga Adelante) so it's coming up against fully grown footballers. But if he's sold too, then that's absolutely absurd, he looks ready for first team chances now, in my opinion.

This makes no sense unless LVG dislikes him. Why not just loan him to some relegation-y La Liga team needing a RB, or a Segunda team needing promotion, or a Championship team?

So it only makes sense if Van Gaal dislikes him? Bizarre statement, maybe he doesn't like being in Manchester or maybe Real need a young highly rated right back for their reserve team.....

We're not exactly spoilt for choice at RB, so this is a little odd.

Ho hum. Making predictions about youngsters who haven't played a single first team appearance is a mug's game. Will always trust the opinion of coaches when us punters are working off the limited evidence of only ever watching them play against reserves and kids from other teams.

I think he should have been given a chance last season but im not too surprised he left this summer. As I mentioned before it was easy to see him getting lost in the shuffle as we moved away from fullbacks

What is a bit surprising is that Madrid wanted him.

If we're really moving away from fullbacks it seems a little odd to have spent £30m on one this summer.

1. Varela has friends in Castillo

2. He is said to be wanting to leave England, not happy with life

3. He wants regular football for the first team, may be a step down, but if 1 and 2 are true, makes sense

They develop players for Real Madrid and are unlikely to spend 5 million euros on players to have a career at Castilla

Why not? They're independent club. It is totally different than in England. They have their own budget and so. Last year Barcelona B bought Denis Suarez from Manchester City. No one expected him to be playing Barcelona in any foreseeable future. Fee years ago Kiko Femenia was bought by Barcelona B for 3.5m and after being released joined Castilla.

Also Eero Markkanen, Finish, 23 years, 1.97m height and bought by Zidane to Castilla 2.2m. And Real didn't paid 5m, that's only an option and won't be exploited unless he becomes really good.

Exactly so the fact that they agreed to a deal with that fixed price to buy suggests they think he might be someone they can develop. Its a significant amount for a Spanish football team. Even the likes of Valencia will only play that for an important first team player
