And he went back to Uruguay for a while to be with his family too.. had kind of a stop start season last year, might still be settling in..He just signed for us last summer...
Varane is 21? Already a world beater.
Varela would have to really turn the corner in the next 2 years to be world class by the age of 25?
So is this lad no good?
I find it very strange why clubs like United (who pride themselves on bring through young lads) don't let a guy like this join the first team to be an understudy for Rafael. Even if it turns out he can't make the step up, so what? At least he's given the opportunity.
It doesn't work that way with everyone.
I agree. But aside from Xavi and Iniesta, i can't think of any late bloomers... even then, they were bench to some extremely good players in their era.

Maybe it's just a myth that United prides itself on youth and always gives youth a chance?
Other than the class of 92 and Sir Matt Busby United have been terrible with youth - Our best prospects have left us because of lack of opportunities and only John O'Shea/Wes Brown/Darren Fletcher/Tom Cleverley and Danny Welbeck have gone on to have multiple seasons at Manchester United since the class of 92 (nearly 22 years ago).

Welbeck, Cleverley, Lawrence, Wilson...Evans
Zidane(at juve 23), scholes(22), beckham(21), luca toni, ian wright, edin dzeko, ramires were all relatively late bloomers.I agree. But aside from Xavi and Iniesta, i can't think of any late bloomers... even then, they were bench to some extremely good players in their era.
Drogba...
It's not about being a late bloomer in his case.He was about to make his first team breakthrough in his former team before transferring to us.At United he obviously need times to adapt and develop to the level required. He had family issue as well as others mentioned.
There's not such a rule that some has to play first team football before a certain age to become world class. We should instead look at what they're capable to do (plus whether they have the right attitude). The talent apparently is there in this case.
Sky included him in the players bought under Moyes but he wasn't. This deal was done before he got here.
The guy he quoted said "his".

Not saying varela will take the same path, but there is a chance as he hasnt got any chance to show his talent to non reserve watchers.
I actually think moving to the wingback system might see him get lost in the shuffle. Playing fullbacks I would have expected him to get his chance finally this season, while Janko has time as first choice right back in the reserves. However since we're playing wingbacks Janko suits the system better than Varela does.
Varela is the reason I think we don't need a right-back. He's ready for a chance and IMO he would be a better option in that wing-back position than Valencia.

Yep. They may all be young, but I'd be perfectly happy with Shaw and James for the LB position and Rafael and Varela for the RB. That's regardless of whether they're wing-backs in a 351 or full-backs in a 433.

They still keep the score when they play in the reserves and the match is 90 mins. I say they are competitive matches.Play him or sell him. 21 year old footballers should be playing competitive football matches. He's played one, 2 years ago. For his own benefit, we should act with some conviction one way or the other.

Did you intentionally quote yourself there or...Yep. I don't even see that as compromising - I genuinely think that foursome could make our FB/WB positions a strong feature of the side. Yes, 'James and Varela have proven nothing' etc etc. But the only difference between Januzaj of last year who plenty on here (most of whom had barely seen him play) thought would struggle to earn more than a couple of sub appearances and the Januzaj of this year who has already got 35 appearances under his belt and is regarded as one of our key assets, is that the former Januzaj hadn't yet been given his chance.
Which is not to say that either Varela or James are Januzaj level, but just that their chances of being strong back-ups is no worse than whatever half-arsed foreign purchase we might make instead. I'd rather have James as Shaw's back-up than Blind.

Shit, no. Quoted the wrong post!
I like the psycho look though, I reckon I pull it off quite well.
Not really an accurate description of him at all. If one of those games was the Manchester Senior Cup last week he was playing out of position at LB and looked uncomfortable there which is probably why Joyce subbed him off.I've only seen Varela properly twice. Both times he's left the same impression on me. Fast as feck, can't defend.

When he first came he seemed a little off positionally and defensively but he was settling in and became a very good player soon after, His defensive qualities are his best attributes imo. As a fullback I'd say he loves to defend first and foremost. Reads the game well and rarely let's people get past him. He's also very good at link up play and contributing to our attacks. I really like him and hoped he'd be in and around the first team this season, challenging Rafa for a spot in the team.
I think a poster on here said he was training with the first team the other day, so hopefully LvG is having a look at him at least.
