Guillermo Varela

Makes sense because Janko looked a strong physical specimen for his age when he arrived and I remember reading here that he would mature to the first team sooner than Varela.

I would love if Giggs gave him some gametime on those 4 matches. Rafael is injured anyway and i would be surprised if Giggs continued this Smalling at rightback nonsense.

No way.Janko despite his physicality advantage looking very raw and naive in positioning.Varela is far closer to the first team than him. Both of them still not as consistent and mature as Vermijl though IMO.

Hard to know until we actually see him in action, but he certainly looks talented enough. If that's all there was to it then likely he would be ready already.

Ready for the 1st team?
I think yes. He is 21 years old, so if we aren't planning to use him on the first team, then there isn't much sense to keep him and play in reserves.

I think that from all our young players, he has the most chances to get into the first team this season. I think that he'll play 10+ matches this season.

You think he has better first team prospects than Powell and Lingard this year ?

Definitely. Rafael won't play 45 games this season, and I guess that Varela will be his understudy and will play when Rafa isn't (be it because of him getting a rest or his inevitable injuries). I don't think that LVG will fancy Jones and Smalling playing there, LVG is a manager who loves having width and his full backs are expected to contribute attacking wise too.

Powell and Lingard will have to compete with a dozen players to play. We have a ridiculosu amount of players who will play on attacking positions (RVP, Rooney, Chicha, Welbeck, Nani, Valencia, Young, Kagawa, Mata, Januzaj, Zaha and potentially a new signing) so unless a few of them (like 3 or 4) leaves, I doubt that Powell and Lingard will get many chances. Same about Wilson and Lawrence although I can see a role for Wilson if Chicha leaves.

I agree. It's hard to know if he's ready or no. The best thing is pre season and let LVG himself to take a judge. LVG will know if he's ready or no after he is given a chance.

BiB, we still have Vermijl. I wonder where he will be in the pecking order or if he will get sold/loan for next season? As long as neither Jones or Smalling cover for Rafael, I am happy.

Exciting player. Love his pace. Reckon there should be good competition on that right side this season.

Apparently Vermijl wants first team football next season, so unless Van Gaal sees him as a starter then it looks like he's off.

I think I read something last season that if Moyes was still here, he would go but re-evaluate if Moyes was gone. He is 22 now and did alright about in the eredivise last season. Can't see him staying if he wants regular football and if here is a potential to move to the dutch league, I'd assume he would take it.

Did he say regular football or first team football. I think he just doesn't want to be loaned again and would be happy with 10 or so appearances as backup giving him the chance to stake the a spot ahead of Rafael.

Wasn't Vermijl in the last year of his contract, and wasn't there talk from his agent that either he gets promoted to first team or he leaves?

From what little I've seen of Varela so far, I see a RB who blow past Rafael this season.

Play him or sell him. 21 year old footballers should be playing competitive football matches. He's played one, 2 years ago. For his own benefit, we should act with some conviction one way or the other.

We could do with a back at rb for rafael. I would like to see him in action for the first team instead of selling him off due to lack of first team action

If Van Gaal thinks his ready he'll definitely play.

Some of the passing in the videos is really good. Lofted balls, through balls, and passing in tight areas. Smalling (as backup RB) would not even attempt some of these passes, let along actually pulling them off. I have no idea how good he is defensively, though.

a proper RB, should be ahead of jones or smalling for sure. not sure how good vermijl is but i'll have varela as rafael's back up rather than jones or smalling.

Varela's weaknesses are his crossing and also his positioning in one on one situations in defense a bit.

He has improved in the 2nd aspect a fair bit over last season though despite the unfortunate problems he had re Family issues etc..

Think he would have gotten atleast his first team debut last season otherwise.

I'm really impressed by this lad. Every time I've seen him, he gets better. Still stuff to develop on but we've just paid nearly 30m for a young player that has things he can improve on. I'll be astonished if this lad doesn't play for the first team at some point this season.

I'm really hoping that if some of the youngsters (included Varela) shine out in America that they'll get game time this season.

I think it's important LVG uses a more settled team this season (i.e. using at least the same 11 more than once) but I'd love to see Guillermo as Rafa's backup.
