Nice to see he is progressing.
He's an excellent prospect, and bar a couple of early games, he has impressed every time. Looks a first team player to me. Given that he was actually signed for about £2.5m by all accounts, I don't think we should worry about him nit being given a chance at some point.
My concern was that we would fast track Janko ahead of him on the basis of him being a better athlete. I still wouldn't rule that out tbh, the bosses seem to be doing a lot of work with him and rate him highly it appears.
Yeah hes a lot faster than him not as good on the ball though. Varela technique is very good and hes really tenacious as wellJanko is a beast, but is he faster than Varela? I don't think a fullbacks needs to be a powerhouse as that sometimes limits agility. Varela also looks to be very sound technically and not just a get it to the byline and cross type of fullback.
Has he returned to Manchester and is he settled now?
Firstly, his opening few games were ok. Just that.
He was regularly caught out of position and I had doubts about him defensively…although going forward he looked very good.
As he got used to the English game, our tactics, other players etc he started to look much better defensively and seemed to be a very good prospect. He played nine competitive games leading up to Christmas and was quite consistent both in defence and in attack.
Then he went home to deal with his family situation and has only recently returned.
Like most foreign lads it takes a little while to settle (or resettle) so if he regains some of the form he had before the break the coaching staff may well try him out towards the back end of the season.
Certainly one to watch.

Cheers, fingers crossed it all works out.MUJAC's post on Tuesday:
Guess it's hard to tell/say if he's settled now given what's gone on with his family recently but it sounds good.
Dont get me wrong Varela has plenty of pace but Janko is absolutely rapid and his build helps him too as his positioning isnt great which is understandable given his ageWell, Varela seems very fast, so Janko must be Richards at his prime or something then... I haven't seen enough of them, but fullbacks tend to face quick and agile wingers/wide players, and thus they need not be built like tanks, but rather they need to be quick and agile - Smalling seems to defy that in defence though.
I predict this kid will take the RB position from Rafael in the next 2-3 seasons. Provided Moyes gives him the chance. It'll take one long injury lay off from Rafael for Varela to slip in and make that position his. He's more mature on the ball than both Rafael and Fabio were at the same age. Reminds me of Hienze. Fearless. I dont think he'll have problems switching to the first team proper.
That's a big contradiction isn't it?
Sorry, what contradiction exactly? I think he's more mature than the twins because he's less prone to the rash challenges, and similar to Hienze in his fearlessness on the pitch. A natural.
I think we remember a different Heinze then. He was very rash and was no where as good on the ball as Rafael was. He had one very good season but was then shown up by Patrice.
Heinze was a solid fullback. He wasn't as technical as Rafael and Evra was but he was much better defensively. What ruined Heinze was his injuries, attitude (nation and money come ahead of the club) and the fact that SAF prefered attacking full backs as opposed to defensive ones.
What devilish said. Hienze adapted to United very quickly. Scored on his debut and looked like he'd been a premiership player for years. He became a fan favorite very, very quickly and won player of the month a few times and even got voted player of the season 2004-5 by United fans. I don't think you remember him too well...but like Devilish said, Fergie prefered Evra's attacking prowess and Hienze was not going to play second fiddle. The final straw was when he pushed for a move to Liverpool. I was really comparing Varela's quick adaption and fearlessness to Hienze.
Its not as simple as that though. Heinze did himself no favors during his stay at United. In SAF autobiography he's described as a mercenary. SAF said that Heinze's agent used to constantly knocked his door to get either a pay rise or permission to talk to other clubs.
If you ask me, Heinze wanted to leave to make more money elsewhere and SAF wanted (or preferred) Evra.
Worked out for all parties then. Hienze got his move to PSG and Evra became the best left back in the world.
You mean Real Madrid.
Wait, so is he back in Manchester now or not?
He's been back a while and has been playing
Any recent videos about?
I like Varela but don't think he will be displacing Rafa. He will be a good option for resting/rotating Rafael and when Rafael gets his inevitable injuries though. I think him and Janko down the right could be a partnership we see at first team level in the coming seasons hopefully. Seems to have a maturity and awareness of what's going in around him. Doesn't shirk challenges and it's nice to hear Moyes mentioned him recently. I know some are insistent on playing for pride in the next few league games but they're a bit dead rubberish now and I'd love to see some youngsters given a go.
I don't think we need to replace Rafael in the first place. But he could be an excellent cover for Rafa when he does get injured. Better than spunking 20mil on Coleman for sure!
There isn't what you would call a 'need' to replace Rafael, but he has done himself no favours under a new manager this season in making his position one of the areas we don't have to think about at all. I'm talking of in the manner Evra had the left-back position so secured during his peak that there was no scope for Fabio to come through. Rafael is deservedly first-choice presently, but he has left the door slightly ajar.
I agree with the notion that, given his injury record, Varela could well step in during a lay-off over the next couple of seasons and make it very difficult for Rafa to get back in. He is currently probably an untouchable by default, not by form.
