Guillermo Varela

So we are short at RB with Rafa who is made of glass and Valencia and yet we gave this lad on loan to Real Madrid. I am surprised he hasn't played for us due to being short in position but the end of him was when Lingard started Rwb when Rafa and Valencia where out. If you can't get into your best position in front of a CAM/winger and Valencia it is time to move on. Hope he gets a few games in the cup etc.

Ahh well I doubt he'll be coming back to us once the loans finished if he's unhappy here. £5 million is a good price if the deal does turn permanent. We have Janko that plays right back and seems to be ahead of Varela in the clubs thoughts.

Madrid B play in the 2nd(?) division in Spain so much different to just reserve football. There is also a 5m buy option so we must be open to selling him.
Ah makes more sense that way. Forgot about the B team.

That option to buy, must mean we are not to fussed about losing him.

Varela is so much more talented than Janko though.

I wouldnt be surprised if it was just for football reasons. Moyes was the one who wanted him and we have Janko who won the reserve team player of the year and is more suited to how we currently play with the wingbacks.

While I like Varela and think he can become a solid rightback for somebody he's not of a level where we couldnt instantly find someone else to replace him with a bit of money.

Reminded me of Rafael the few times I watched him. Was hoping he would be give a few games this season but obviously wasn't in Van Gaal's plans.. I doubt he'll see him back here after the loan now.

Is this to do him with having a very ill family member or something. Seem to remember reading that somewhere along with his family were based over there???

His parents were in a car crash so he went to be with them for a while, but I think that was in Uruguay. Do you mean "over there" as in Madrid?

it's a shame we will never seen him back.. he would be natural successor to Rafael as he is very similar. Looks in a real form from the reports. Tony V looked good last time but I believe Varela could make it here and is one for the future also can play left back, but we will rather splash some money on someone else sadly..

Don't know but I presumed his leaving was more to do with factors other than us not fancying him? Maybe he didn't settle or something? Not sure, but you're right he always looked like a good player.

Has he played any first team games yet? Can't see him getting many games with Arbeloa and Carvajal around.

For a while, there were guys saying he wasn't far off Rafael, and worth a first team spot...

I suspect he's the second best back four RB on our books. Looks like it'll remain a suspicion as I can't see him returning.

He is doing well for the 6th team in the third spanish division.

Real Madrid might have no plan for him, other than help la Castilla returning in Liga Adelante.

Cant help but think absence is making the CAF's collective hearts grow fonder. He never looked a natural defender to me. Positionally quite weak and not great in the tackle. On the positive side, good going forward, pacey and very athletic.

Its not like hes playing at high level at the moment either. You could probably argue Vermijl achieved more during his loan spell in Holland.

The worldie in that U20 side was Josema Giménez, not Varela. He'll be OK wherever he ends up, but I don't think he would be a regular starter for us.

His positioning needed a bit of work but he's a strong tackler and brilliant one-on-one defensively. I'd say he's a natural enough defender.

I have mainly seen him with the Uruguayan youth team during the world cup, and i'm convinced that he was better defensively than offensively.

Did he changed that much ?

Tbf it wasnt like we'd a huge amount to go on but that was the impression i was left with. Obviously others saw something different.

Id ideally like to see him playing at a higher level.....

Disagree with you there Deco. Agree with you regarding the rest of it which makes him sound like a very complete defender, which I think he was. I was really impressed with him while he was in the U21's and I thought he'd get a chance as a wingback in LVG's system, if only a small Number of cameos.

He looked more natural than Rafael to me. Wasn't as rash either.
