Qatar to be cleared of corruption for 2022 bid

I for one am in shock. This comes as a complete surprise.

I think we should all now congratulate them for winning the bid fair and square.

People are so bitter over this. C'mon guys, give Qatar a chance. A winter WC is probably the way to go anyways.

everyone who voted for Qatar was either corrupt or grossly incompetent.
But it's going to go ahead.

Dunno about the corruption allegations. Maybe they're true, maybe they aren't. But voters must've only been stupid or corrupt to vote for Qatar ? Come on now.

IMO it's always nice to see debutant hosts for major sporting events. Yes, in some cases the infrastructure and HR planning maybe not be of the highest standard, but that's how awareness in general sporting related terms is increased right ? No one could have envisaged F1 races in Bahrain or Abu Dhabi - yet now they have some of the best circuits on the whole calender. It'd be no fun if only an elite group got to host these events while newer entries end up getting blackballed. Bit worried about the weather conditions though. The whole Gulf area can be very hot and dry even during the winters.

How many people (outside of Bahrain and Abu Dhabi) are travelling to this races???

Millions are travelling to a Football World Cup and Qatar is a small country

With numerous human rights issues as well. And will the alcohol sponsors manage to get the ban temporarily lifted? Will patrons to the event be arrested irregardless of actions just because they're drunk?

Poor infrastructure is the least of Qatar's concern. That's a secondary issue after you consider that there's no alcohol allowed. Just thought i'd stress the importance of this by placing it at the forefront of things. Oh, and it's also too hot to play football. The second one's a bit of a pisser really. It's literally the worst place i can think of to hold a football tournament, full of sheikhs with billions to throw around. It's not hard to see where the allegations come from.

I wouldnt expect any less from someone called "Snow".

The rather bigger problem is that it is a slave-driving, deeply racist, worker-murdering utter scum state.

It's a bit more serious than 'FIFA, lol'.

Qatar 2022 World Cup risks 4000 lives, warns International Trade Union Confederation

“More than 4000 workers risk losing their life over the next seven years as construction for World Cup facilities gets under way if no action is taken to give migrant workers’ rights. The annual death toll among those working on building sites could rise to 600 a year – almost a dozen a week – unless the Doha government makes urgent reforms,” said Sharan Burrow.

Qatar World Cup Workers’ Standards: no legal enforcement, no worker rights

The kafala visa sponsorship system ties workers to their employers, as they cannot leave the country or move to another employer without permission. Qatari law denies migrant workers the right to form or join trade unions.

“Not a single change has been made or recommended to Qatar’s laws that deny workers their fundamental rights. No workplace voice or representative is allowed for migrant workers in Qatar. A worker welfare officer appointed by the employer is no substitute for a duly nominated worker representative.

“The promise to provide freedom of movement for workers is a sham, as Qatar enforces segregation of workers on a racial basis.

Qatar: Human Rights Investigators Vanish, as FIFA Forges Ahead on 2022 World Cup

The ITUC has expressed serious concern for the safety and welfare of two human rights investigators, Ghimire Gundev and Krishna Upadhyaya, in Qatar. The two British nationals were being followed and harassed by Qatari security agents as they documented extreme violations of workers’ rights in the Gulf state.

It's like apartheid South Africa getting the World Cup.

You wouldn't hold the Winter Olympics in Saudi Arabia...

What do you mean by 'anyways'? Because I see no way whatsoever in which a winter WC would have been necessary or advisable if they hadn't awarded the tournament to Qatar. It is purely a desperate measure to make it feasible to hold the tournament in such an inappropriate climate.

Also, I maintain the right to be 'bitter' about the fact that 1200 people have already died working on Qatar's preparations for the tournament. How is that remotely acceptable?!

That traffic could be handled by the infrastructure/ transportation development TBF. Considering the fact that they're projected to spend about $200 billion through the whole process (Brazil spent ~$15 billion and South Africa ~$4 billion) I'm sure it'll be more than enough. Really doubt they'll manage to make a mess of things given the fact that Qatar is facing fully depleted oil reserves in about 15-20 years, necessitating a need to sell a reformed image amid a greater need for friendly terms with geopolitical allies.

Not well placed to comment on the human rights aspect. Dunno the ground realities. Though it's not like as if a nation with a questionable sociopolitical standing hasn't hosted major sporting events before.

Im just lost for words that they've manage to get a censure in there for the FA too.

They're on record now as being aware of all of Qatar's human rights abuses, especially those that pertain to the World Cup, but you just have to laugh on that one. England get a bollocking for co-operating with the investigation.

"But one of the ironies is if the FA have complied with the requests for evidence they stand to be damned, whereas people who have not complied and not provided evidence cannot be criticised."

Something seriously wrong with how football is run when a micro state like Qatar who are in no way a suitable host gets to stage the world cup just because they are rich. Workers dying every month and no one seems to give a feck.

What's "questionable" about it? It's a clear fact. Their citizens openly sell human beings, sanctioned by the state. Just look at it.

It's an actual slave society.

@Crono

Blimey that's rather unnerving !

So lemme get this straight, human trafficking is permissible by law out there ?

I remember when the preliminary reports came out on all the bidders and Qatar was judged to be by far the worst option. Its bordering on comical now that some people still insist it was all done above board.

I just hope it all comes crashing down before Blatter kicks the bucket so he can see his legacy torn away from him.

Saying that Qatar should hold the world cup is like giving a big thumbs up to slave labour.

It wont work there in summer or winter for obvious reasons. This will continue to be a war between Blatter and the FAs.

You thought I was serious, as if anyone agrees with this?

Blatter could be dead by then and leave this mess for everyone to clean up.

Well, one positive that might come out of a Qatar World Cup in winter is the removal of football as an Olympic sport. Leastwise, such is the threat of the IOC [may they hold to it and give Fifa a bloody nose into the bargain].

Bottom line: there's a reason why Blatter & co traditionally go out of their way to butter-up the less mainstream football nations, while slating the major footballing countries...and it's absolutely nothing to do with spreading the game around the globe.

Indeed, although would Qatar have been your first port of call for such? South Korea-Japan was an entertaining and competently run tournament, yet they could also bring an established supporter base and competitive teams to the party.

The 1% continues to laugh all the way to the bank.
