People are so bitter over this. C'mon guys, give Qatar a chance. A winter WC is probably the way to go anyways.
How many people (outside of Bahrain and Abu Dhabi) are travelling to this races???Dunno about the corruption allegations. Maybe they're true, maybe they aren't. But voters must've only been stupid or corrupt to vote for Qatar ? Come on now.
IMO it's always nice to see debutant hosts for major sporting events. Yes, in some cases the infrastructure and HR planning maybe not be of the highest standard, but that's how awareness in general sporting related terms is increased right ? No one could have envisaged F1 races in Bahrain or Abu Dhabi - yet now they have some of the best circuits on the whole calender. It'd be no fun if only an elite group got to host these events while newer entries end up getting blackballed. Bit worried about the weather conditions though. The whole Gulf area can be very hot and dry even during the winters.

Millions are travelling to a Football World Cup and Qatar is a small country

“More than 4000 workers risk losing their life over the next seven years as construction for World Cup facilities gets under way if no action is taken to give migrant workers’ rights. The annual death toll among those working on building sites could rise to 600 a year – almost a dozen a week – unless the Doha government makes urgent reforms,” said Sharan Burrow.
The kafala visa sponsorship system ties workers to their employers, as they cannot leave the country or move to another employer without permission. Qatari law denies migrant workers the right to form or join trade unions.
“Not a single change has been made or recommended to Qatar’s laws that deny workers their fundamental rights. No workplace voice or representative is allowed for migrant workers in Qatar. A worker welfare officer appointed by the employer is no substitute for a duly nominated worker representative.
“The promise to provide freedom of movement for workers is a sham, as Qatar enforces segregation of workers on a racial basis.
The ITUC has expressed serious concern for the safety and welfare of two human rights investigators, Ghimire Gundev and Krishna Upadhyaya, in Qatar. The two British nationals were being followed and harassed by Qatari security agents as they documented extreme violations of workers’ rights in the Gulf state.
You wouldn't hold the Winter Olympics in Saudi Arabia...

Im just lost for words that they've manage to get a censure in there for the FA too.
"But one of the ironies is if the FA have complied with the requests for evidence they stand to be damned, whereas people who have not complied and not provided evidence cannot be criticised."
That traffic could be handled by the infrastructure/ transportation development TBF. Considering the fact that they're projected to spend about $200 billion through the whole process (Brazil spent ~$15 billion and South Africa ~$4 billion) I'm sure it'll be more than enough. Really doubt they'll manage to make a mess of things given the fact that Qatar is facing fully depleted oil reserves in about 15-20 years, necessitating a need to sell a reformed image amid a greater need for friendly terms with geopolitical allies.
Not well placed to comment on the human rights aspect. Dunno the ground realities. Though it's not like as if a nation with a questionable sociopolitical standing hasn't hosted major sporting events before.
bribed for sure....anyone they could get their hands on.....Who else did they need to bribe?
It wont work there in summer or winter for obvious reasons. This will continue to be a war between Blatter and the FAs.
You thought I was serious, as if anyone agrees with this? What do you mean by 'anyways'? Because I see no way whatsoever in which a winter WC would have been necessary or advisable if they hadn't awarded the tournament to Qatar. It is purely a desperate measure to make it feasible to hold the tournament in such an inappropriate climate.
Also, I maintain the right to be 'bitter' about the fact that 1200 people have already died working on Qatar's preparations for the tournament. How is that remotely acceptable?!
ESPN said:paying for a gala dinner worth 35,000 pounds for Caribbean football officials and organising an England friendly against Trinidad.

Something seriously wrong with how football is run when a micro state like Qatar who are in no way a suitable host gets to stage the world cup just because they are rich. Workers dying every month and no one seems to give a feck.
