Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

The Gambler.

This is a remake of the 1974 film and they really shouldn't have bothered.

Of course, It doesn't help that the main character is a dick and you instantly feel a disliking for him, If they were going for an anti-hero of a main character then they failed miserably.

Thee premise is that A guy is a gambling addict, he is already in heavy debt to a mobster at the start of the film and as the film continues he becomes further in debt and despite winning at blackjack several times and winning enough money to pay off most of the debt he manages to lose it all and the gangsters are becoming inpatient.

The back story consists of Him being a novelist and his book making $17000 and him being a literary professor and having an odd relationship (non sexual) with a bright young female student, who didn't do a great deal to bring any credibility to the flick.

Were there any bright spots? A decent performance by John Goodman and the pleasure of seeing the main character (Played poorly by Mark Wahlberg) get his ass handed to him a couple of times, but far from being able to save the film.

This film was a big reminder of why I am much more likely to put an indie film on then a hollywood blockbuster. A stinker.

Moon (2009)

About a guy who's working on the moon for a company that's extracting some sort of futuristic fuel from there. Anyway he stays at the station by himself and just keeps an eye out on all the automated machines to make sure everything is working well. He's on a 3 year contract which is coming to an end in two weeks which I guess make him contemplate things in his life. Also he has a robot companion voiced by Kevin Spacey. The film also has a top class soundtrack.

Mamma Mia

I cant be the only one who likes this , just watched it with my 10 year and he never moved.
Yes it has some rank bad singing but I have to admit I love it.
Julie Walters is excellent in it despite her inability to sing, the same can be said for Pierce Brosnan.
I knew every single song, loved the story and how it panned out.
If you like Abba you will love this.

Whatever happened to Boss's least heterosexual post of the week thread?

Those of you that recommended It Follows need to have a word with yourselves and you owe me $7.25. The Babadook was good though.

Yes watched it a few years ago it was incredible. Although we'll never really know how exactly these people were the film does seem to give a amazing insight in how evil and at the same normal the nazi regime was. Truly truly terrifying.

Also I like to mention what a mass cnut Magda Goebbels was. Hated her more in the film than fecking Hitler.
Where do you watch films like Downfall and Come and See online with subs?

I'm sure someone on here will know but I watched downfall on youtube a few years ago, so I just got a bit lucky with that one. But I've had a quick look and I can't find it online with subs for free,(Well unless your Russian pretty good).

It's on blinkbox with English subs for£2.50( http://www.blinkbox.com/movies/downfall-(34784)).

As for Come and See I haven't found it yet and I'll image I will just buy the dvd.

PRIME CUT (1972)

Lee Marvin heads to Kansas to collect an Irish mob debt from meat mogul Gene Hackman. Huge doses of black humour running through this quirky one. Really enjoyed watching two genuine movie stars going at it.

Atticus Institute
An institute that deals with people who have possible supernatural powers but bite off more than they can chew when one of their subjects is actually possessed by a demon. Told through mockumentary style, the film is very average. Not scary at all and I have already forgotten most of it having seen it yesterday 3/10

The Gambler

This film does build up tension quite well and it reaches a boiling point in the final gambling scene but the problem is that the lead is do unlikeable that you are actually watching the film hoping he fails, which makes the film much less enjoyable 4/10

Fracture

I love courtroom dramas and this one was brilliant. Loved Anthony Hopkins performance and Ryan Gosling was decent too. The twist is quite predictable and the ending is slightly rushed but that's ok because Rosamund Pike is hot! 8/10

Starred Up

Didn't think I would like this but I actually LOVED this. Jack O'Connel was amazing as were the rest of the cast. The story felt like a TV show told in feature length, so many good characters with brilliant arcs. I just wish they explained a few things that were looked over but still a damn good prison film 8.5/10

St. Vincent - Really liked this film. Hilarious in parts, touching in other parts. Slightly preachy but still good. Bill Murray was great, as with the little kid.

Headhunter 8/10.

Strange Norwegian film that is pretty implausible and a bit daft, but well-paced and entertaining and defo well worth seeing. Nice(-ish) plot technique to gloss over a gaping hole in the narrative at the end, but I'll forgive it that. Curious to know if it was well received or a big deal in Scandinavia. I watched Trollhunter a while back too and liked that, albeit it was somewhat more understated. Underrated makers of films our Nordic friends.

I'm the wrong person to ask to be honest. I only vaguely recall having heard the title before. Also I only ever watch movies on long flights.
But Scandinavia do seem to get some praise for its movies, based on what little I hear.

I've been sliding into that as well a bit lately and Headhunter and Guardians of the Galaxy in the last few days are the first films I've watched at home for a while. Would defo recommend the former if it's showing on a flight.

I'm not flying anywhere anytime soon, sadly. But I tend to keep recommendations like this in mind for some reason even though it's hardly ever relevant, so I might watch it some day. :)

Check out Joachim Trier´s films. Fantastic filmmaker from Norway.

Focus:
Average film, which in the end up you ask yourself why you bothered. Will Smith desperately needs a hit as his last few have been terrible, Sad to see as I really like him as an actor. 6/10

Yeh if the film had B list actors it would have been poor. Will Smith and that blonde saved the film from being a flop.

Open Windows
Thriller starring Elijah Wood where he gets more than he bargained for when he is given the opportunity to spy on his favourite actress. I didn't mind that it was told mainly through computer screen windows, in fact, I thought it added something to the film. It actually starts off quite interesting but as the film goes on, the story becomes more and more unbelievable to the point of becoming silly 5.5/10

Looking at Will Smith's filmography, it's been pretty dire from the get-go. I remember liking Ali and I Am Legend, and Wild Wild West is the closest a Western has come to perfection, but other than that....

I'm not so sure, Think he has had a few good ones:

- Bad Boys 1 & 2
- Independence Day (at the time)
- Men in Black 1 (not a huge fan of 2-3)
- Wild, Wild, West (although I bet he wished he took The Matrix now)
- Ali
- Hitch (I loved that film, although it isn't a classic)
- Pursuit of Happyness
- I am Legend

I think from Seven Pounds onwards is where it starts to seriously go downhill from him, Now i'm not sure where he goes from here..

Yup Bad Boys 1 & 2 and Pursuit of Happyness are some of my favourite films. As with MIB.
